While Africa is the biggest recipient of aid globally, the terms, conditions and principles upon which aid is delivered are rarely defined by the people of Africa - although it is for them that this aid, at least rhetorically, is meant to create positive change. With the current global economic crisis and high-level meetings on aid effectiveness, the debate on aid to Africa is resurgent. Coming from the diverse perspectives of African social commentators, academics and activists including Demba Moussa Dembele, Patrick Bond, Samir Amin and Charles Mutasa, this comprehensive volume explores the premise, history and foundation upon which the concept of aid is based. It considers aid's relationship to the broader development discourse in Africa, the politics and power dynamics of aid mechanisms and how the emergence of powers such as China and India are redefining the global aid architecture. Aid to Africa considers how to create a more just aid system that contributes to Africa's development while also elaborating alternative approaches that understand the inherent inequity of aid.Critically, this book provides a framework not merely to render aid more effective, something which the current mainstream discourse is grappling to define, but to create an alternative African development paradigm from Pan-Africanist, feminist and other perspectives.
William Stamps Cherry - They Called Me 'Demba Creecy'
William Stamps Cherry - They Called Me 'Demba Creecy' is about the celebrated explorer in Africa at the turn of the century. Cherry's foremost reputation in 1901 was that of the American explorer who was the first white man to travel there and who turned on the light in the heart of Africa. His second reputation was that of a successful big-game hunter. This book explores that reputation and provides the reasons for why he was there when he was, and what and why he did what he did when he was there more than 120 years ago. This new book, William Stamps Cherry - They Called Me 'Demba Creecy' is the backstory to the other book, William Stamps Cherry - Into the Dark Unknown - Central Africa in 1899, referred to as 'the explorer's report.' This book is referred to as 'the hunter's report.' In it you will meet his older step-brother, James Harvey, and his friend, Charles McClintock. You will learn much about ivory and African elephants. You will also learn much about real hunting in the wild. When you have finished reading, your big-picture perspective of this sensitive topic - elephant hunting - will be different than your current view. Please know that some of the events recorded are descriptively gruesome and not for the faint of heart. The objective of this historical record is to provide information for today's wildlife conservation and protection efforts and for the organizations involved pertaining to the Central African elephant. Because both of Cherry's reputations as explorer and hunter were secured at the same time, both books combined report the full story of this amazing piece of unknown world history.
