There are mysteries in every culture, and I was born into one with true magick at its core. Tracking the Grunch on the levees, holding seances on the bayous, and catching snakes in the swamps-this is what my childhood looked like. With every adventure came more wonder, and with every experience, more mysteries were revealed. This, for me, was growing up Creole in New Orleans. Created for members of my Conjure Club, the Anthology of Conjure Volume 1 contains a collection of articles, eBooks, and downloads I have written over the years about the folk traditions of my culture of origin.

Imperial Sexism

Denise M. Walsh

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC

Communities across the world engage in gender practices that are seen by many as in conflict with women's rights, such as Muslim women's face veils and polygyny. But in Imperial Sexism, Denise M. Walsh argues that culture and women's rights are not inherently at odds. The root problem is imperial sexism: the legacy of colonial-era racism and sexism and their compounding harms. Through a cross-regional comparative analysis of three dissimilar policy debates in three very different democracies--the 2014 French "burka ban" adjudicated at the European Court of Human Rights, the 1998 legalization of polygyny in post-apartheid South Africa, and the 1985 reform of the "marrying out" rule for Indigenous women in Canada--Walsh confirms that a clash between culture and women's rights is always avoidable, examines why the presumption of a clash endures, and highlights the damage this presumption causes. She centers the voices of women who experience imperial sexism, many of whom resist the notion of a clash and instead harmonize cultural, religious, and women's rights by focusing on their plural identities and lived experiences. By contrast, when politicians and conservative group leaders insist upon a clash, they rely on imperial myths, binaries, and tropes, and a misuse of history. Ultimately, by amplifying the arguments of women most affected by controversial gender practices, Imperial Sexism develops a framework to promote justice, reject colonial prejudice, and strengthen the indivisibility of human rights and democratic inclusiveness.

Unsettling Spirit

Unsettling Spirit

Denise M. Nadeau

McGill-Queen's University Press

What does it mean to be a white settler on land taken from peoples who have lived there since time immemorial? In the context of reconciliation and Indigenous resurgence, Unsettling Spirit provides a personal perspective on decolonization, informed by Indigenous traditions and lifeways, and the need to examine one's complicity with colonial structures. Applying autoethnography grounded in Indigenous and feminist methodologies, Denise Nadeau weaves together stories and reflections on how to live with integrity on stolen and occupied land. The author chronicles her early and brief experience of "Native mission" in the late 1980s and early 1990s in northern Canada and Chiapas, Mexico, and the gradual recognition that she had internalized colonialist concepts of the "good Christian" and the Great White Helper. Drawing on somatic psychotherapy, Nadeau addresses contemporary manifestations of helping and the politics of trauma. She uncovers her ancestors' settler background and the responsibilities that come with facing this history. Caught between two traditions – born and raised Catholic but challenged by Indigenous ways of life – the author traces her engagement with Indigenous values and how relationships inform her ongoing journey. A foreword by Cree-Métis author Deanna Reder places the work in a broader context of Indigenous scholarship. Incorporating insights from Indigenous ethical and legal frameworks, Unsettling Spirit offers an accessible reflection on possibilities for settler decolonization as well as for decolonizing Christian and interfaith practice.

The Educators’ Guide to Whole-school Wellbeing addresses challenges faced by schools wanting to improve wellbeing. While many schools globally now understand the need to promote and protect student wellbeing, they often find themselves stuck – not knowing where to start, what to prioritise, or how to implement whole-school change. This book fills that gap. This book provides companionship through rich stories from schools around the world that have created wellbeing practices that work for their schools. It guides educators through processes that help create individualised, contextualised school wellbeing plans. With chapters addressing ‘why wellbeing?’, ‘what is "whole school?"’, change dynamics, measurement, staff wellbeing, coaching, cultural responsiveness, and how to build buy-in, it is the first of its kind. Balancing research and practice for each topic with expert practitioner and researcher insights, this book gives schools access to best-practice guidance from around the world in a user-friendly format, designed for busy educators. What sets the authors apart from the many school wellbeing practitioners globally is their substantial experience working alongside diverse school groups. While many have experience in one school, few work across a multitude of very different schools and clusters, giving these practising academics a unique appreciation for effective, cross-context processes.

Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship
This book explores the connection between strong democracy and neoliberal development schemes based on the concept of ‘social entrepreneurship’ in Thailand and Southern India. With an original approach, this book addresses the intersection between emerging approaches to development; namely microfinance, microenterprise, and social entrepreneurship, and the ability of societies to generate their own public goods without state assistance. Utilizing observation, fieldwork, and practice in Northern Thailand and Southern India, as well as secondary sources from the southern Asia region more generally, the author examines the challenges of democratic governance and generation of public goods where civil society and democracy, as development strategies, have become less meaningful to citizens across the developing world than micro-development. The author argues that these approaches to development have impacts on development and civil society building, but do not necessarily amount to political empowerment, raising important questions for civic participation in the state when the state is no longer viewed as the locus of public goods and democratic governance. Presenting a new theoretical approach to understanding the changing paradigm of development and political participation, Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship will be of interest to students and scholars of development politics, political economy and governance.
Women, Civil Society and the Geopolitics of Democratization
Over the past decade, democratization and civil society promotion became key variables in preserving global security and the liberal economic market. This book examines the prevalence of democratization policies as a hegemonic geopolitical tool; these policies represent a concerted political effort in which civil society organizations are manipulated through funding strategies. Denise Horn offers a fresh, innovative feminist-constructivist perspective by arguing that Western gender norms—i.e. those norms that determine degrees of participation within civil society—inform the policies of hegemonic powers and transform the foundations of civil society in transitional states. This powerful volume will be of interest to students and scholars in Gender and Women’s Studies, Political Science, and International Relations.

Philosophical Disquisitions: Another Era, is the fourth book in Issert's series of books that focus on her life as a Midwest farmer's daughter who grew up in the 1960s and 70s, and how she weaves those lessons into life today. All books in her Philosophical Disquisition series bubble over with stories of growing up in a simpler time. A time when we were proud to face adversity and deal with austerity on our own merits. "Denise encourages her readers to reflect on their own ancestors and the importance of remembering the past to pave the way to understanding the future." - D. Kuykendall Middle School Language Arts Teacher "This book is lighthearted and serious, charming and hopeful." - Professor A. Salzman "What came through loud and clear to me was how much you enjoy living. I was struck with the depth of your life and your experience of it." - J.Kubalewski LCSW "These books are like sifting through a box of family photos and having your heart and mind filled with nostalgia and a love for what is truly most important...family." - K. Smith High School English Teacher There were less distractions, and that was OK. It was not a waste of time to lie in the grass and listen to an entire ball game. It was not a waste of time to ride a two wheeled bicycle for hours without ever leaving the gravel drive. Sunday was a sacred day to spend with family. We took time to share our history with each other. We didn't need national attention to do things right, we just did. If these thoughts make you think, "A ha. I remember those days." Maybe you weren't lucky enough to have lived during those idyllic days, and you want to peek into that era. Welcome these books into your library.
