A Kitchener Man's Bit

A Kitchener Man's Bit

Long out of print, this new edition memoir by an intelligent and articulate “other rank", provides fascinating insights into the Great War infantryman's experience. In autumn 1915, twenty-year-old Gerald Dennis enlisted in Kitchener’s Army. Assigned to the 21st (Service) Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, affectionately known as the “Yeoman Rifles”, he experienced fierce fighting on the Somme 1916, during Messines Ridge and Third Ypres in 1917 before deployment to Italy in the immediate aftermath of the Caporetto disaster. Re-assigned to a battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in summer 1918, Dennis took part in the advance to victory before demobilisation in 1919. A vivid and engaging record of wartime service and comradeship, his recollections are not those of the archetype disenchanted ex-soldier: “Whatever impressions the readers of this book draw, I would like to emphasise that I bear no resentment or bitterness. As far as I could, I have drawn a true and honest picture of my army life … I realise that I did only the merest little bit for my King and Country, not that we gave either special thought. We had volunteered for them.”

Victims of the Past provides a clear understanding of Canadian history from a First Nations point of view. Gerald Kiesman has spent 20 years researching how the Indigenous, First Nation, Metis and Inuit people have been impacted by colonization. Upon his research, he recognized that the history written about Canada and the Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples was far outdated and was from a one-sided view, the European point of view. The books in libraries, book stores and information in the media, did not speak the truth about the relationship between the British, French, Spanish and Canada with the Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people, and did not fully identify the violence inflicted upon thousands of Indigenous children in the Indian Residential Schools, along with other assimilation actions such as the Indian day schools, Indian hospitals and child welfare sixties scoop. Victims of the Past looks at how Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples lost control of their land and resources, laws imposed upon them, court battles, treaties, settlement agreements and how Canada was formed by European immigrants and looks at the history and impact of the government/church run Indian residential schools, day schools and Indian hospitals, and how it has impacted generations of Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people today. Victims of the Past identifies the many challenges Indigenous, First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples experience in todays society from the impact of the Indian residential school such as; poverty, homelessness, suicide crisis, high rate of Indigenous children/youth in foster care, high rate of Indigenous, First Nations, Metis and Inuit in the correctional institutions, along with missing and murdered women and girls and also experience systemic racism in all areas of health, justice, education, politics and in the general public. "Victims of the Past provides an interpretation of Canadian history from an Indigenous point of view. Victims of the Past provides a direction in understanding the relationship between the Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people and first settlers. Educating society from the Indigenous point of view is paramount in understanding the history of Canada."Truly, a unique book." Phil Fontaine (former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations)

In this groundbreaking and lavishly illustrated volume edited by Dennis Reinhartz and Gerald D. Saxon, five leading scholars in history, geography, and cartography discuss the role Spanish explorers and mapmakers played in bringing knowledge of the New World to Europe. The entradas, of Pánfilo de Narváez and Alvar Núnez Cabeza de Vaca (1527-37), Fray Marcos de Niza and Francisco Vásquez de Coronado (1539-42), and Hernando de Soto and Luis de Moscoso (1539-43), into the Greater Southwest of North America were crucial in the dissemination of information and images of the newly discovered lands. The contributors investigate linkages between the early explorers' experiences, their influence on indigenous peoples, and perceptions of the region as reflected in printed maps of the period. This body of images, which incorporated Indian information, made a powerful impression on the still largely preliterate people of Europe, reshaping their world.

A widely adopted practitioner resource and course text, this book shows how to apply knowledge about behavior change in general -- and the stages-of-change model in particular -- to make substance abuse treatment more effective. The authors are leaders in the field who describe ways to tailor interventions for clients with varying levels of motivation or readiness to change. They draw on cutting-edge theory and research on the transtheoretical model to explain what works (and what doesn't work) at different stages of change. Rich clinical examples illustrate the "whats," "whys," and "how-tos" of using the stages-of-change model to inform treatment planning and intervention for individuals, groups, couples, and families. New to This Edition *Reflects the ongoing development of the stages-of-change model and research advances over the past decade. *Chapter on stage-based brief interventions in health care, social service, and community settings. *Group treatment chapter has been significantly revised. *Expanded coverage of the change processes relevant to each stage. See also Group Treatment for Substance Abuse, Second Edition, by Mary Marden Velasquez et al., a manual for a group-based approach grounded in the transtheoretical model.

Following the very successful Ethiopia Engraved, an illustrated book of engravings by foreign travellers from 1681 to 1900, Ethiopia Photographed covers the period from the inception of photography in the country up to the Italian Fascist invasion in 1936. The people, terrain, buildings and rulers of Ethiopia - such as Emperor Melenik, Lej Iyasu and Emperor Haile Selassie - make it a highly photogenic country, as this lavishly illustrated book reveals.Situated in lofty, often inaccessible mountains between the Red Sea and the Blue Nile, and extending far into the Horn of Africa, it is a complex and mysterious country which as always exercised an extraordinary fascination for the outside world. The book begins with an introduction which gives a brief history of Ethiopia in this period, and describes the role of photography at this time. The richly captured images of Ethiopia Photographed bear witness to many personalities and places not previously seen and, in many cases, now lost for all time but for the photogenic memories recorded here.

The film career of Dennis Hopper spans half a century, beginning in the mid 1950s and ending in the new millennium upon his death. Hopper had a strange but brilliant career on the screen, starting in the golden age of James Dean and John Wayne, going through the Corman B movies of the 1960s, the turbulent but brilliant 1970s, his big comeback in the 1980s, to his days as Hollywood's favourite villain in the 90s, then into the B movies and late TV gold of his final years. This book goes through Hopper's credits, the TV appearances (Medic, 24, Crash), his classic movies (Easy Rider, The Last Movie, American Friend, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet), lesser known classics (Tracks, Mad Dog Morgan, River's Edge), odd ball curiosities (White Star, Human Highway, Bloodbath), lost forgotten gems (Last Days of Frankie the Fly, Blackout, Catchfire) and everything in between. This is the ultimate guide to the screen work of Dennis Hopper, one of the most exciting and charismatic actors the world has ever seen.
