The Road to Americanism: The Constitutional History of the United States
"It's a must read for any student of American law and history Haugh brings a very concise and easy to understand approach to learning about the founding of the American Republic."-Rep. Matt Soper, LLB, LLM, Colorado's House District 54Forces, foreign and domestic, are attacking the United States and its Constitution. Their goal? To undermine our founding history and national character. The Declaration of Independence claimed our rights; the Constitution defends them. To stand against the forces of tyranny that seek to destroy our freedom, we must learn from history. The Road to Americanism is the constitutional history that delves into and analyzes how our society and governing principles evolved from the love of liberty. It: Tells the story of how we became "Americans," emphasizing the value of the melting potExplains how this new culture led the charge to abolish slavery throughout the worldShowcases in detail the history, philosophy, brilliance, and vision behind our founding documentsDemonstrates how re-engaging with our founding principles can help us achieve Aristotle's "best" form of government by promoting justice and protecting libertyThe Road to Americanism-unlike contemporary corrupt curricula and media malfeasance-is rooted in facts from original source materials. This book shows why our founding principles are so relevant and essential today. As Americans, "We the People" determine our fate. With the knowledge and tools to protect our country's future, we can protect our own.
Political Vertigo: Stabilizing Politics in an Upside Down World
Political Vertigo provides a fresh perspective of government in the United States. Advances in the fields of psychology, economics, and mathematics since 1787 have given us a number of tools that can be applied to the field of government. By revisiting founding principles with modern tools, we can see how changing conditions have affected our course of self-governance.The modern tools include those advocated by political scientists John Payne and Jerry Pournelle; economists John Maynard Keynes, F.A. Hayek, and James Rickards; and historians Joseph Tainter, William Strauss, and Neil Howe. The founding principles really have their roots in the writings of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. Aristotle actually proposed many of the founding generation's republican principles, including separation of powers. Madison's treatment of factions in Federalist 10 has been recognized as one of the best and more important documents during the ratification debates. In that document, he wrote of mortal diseases "under which popular governments have everywhere perished". He actually derived these diseases from his study of Book 5 of Aristotle's Politics, where Aristotle addressed why governments fail. Whereas Aristotle and the founders had to rely on their innate understanding of human nature, we have tools that help us to better understand why their conclusions work and see where they are weak. The framers didn't just write a document called the Constitution; they engineered a distributed system of government called federalism. The engineering process they used is surprisingly similar to the process used by software engineers today. They described a structure of government with associated behaviors. As such, we can use modern engineering practices to analyze the Constitution for strengths and weaknesses. Political Vertigo draws on these practices.Whereas the Constitution was based more upon Aristotelean logic, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights were influenced more by the Enlightenment thinkers John Locke, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, David Hume, and Montesquieu. No investigation into American government would be complete without considering these foundations, and Political Vertigo addresses them. The United States is at a crossroads in its history. Strong forces are pushing it away from its constitutional roots. By revisiting the very foundation of society and government with a fresh eye, the reader is left with a solid understanding of the choices and potential consequences that await.

The Gospels And Christian Life reads the four canonical Gospels as handbooks for religious formation through communal practices. The book focuses on the communities that produced each gospel, the dynamic energy each gospel displays for creating and sustaining community life, the different interpretations of the person of Jesus, and the different systems of organization and leadership each gospel promulgated. The authors carefully describe the social context of each Gospel and delineate the practices the texts prescribe. Each gospel has an imaginative portal, an introductory chapter introducing the necessary background for understanding the social, intellectual, and religious setting for each gospel. Their reading of each Gospel builds on these foundations to illustrate the nature and scope of the community's practices. Their work starts from the assumption that the communities did not look to the Gospels for biographical data on the life of Jesus to offer the reader a powerful reading of each Gospel community, its unique practices, and the way people were trained to become members of it. This book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate teachers and students, pastors, and the general audience eager for new ways to understand the New Testament.

The film career of Dennis Hopper spans half a century, beginning in the mid 1950s and ending in the new millennium upon his death. Hopper had a strange but brilliant career on the screen, starting in the golden age of James Dean and John Wayne, going through the Corman B movies of the 1960s, the turbulent but brilliant 1970s, his big comeback in the 1980s, to his days as Hollywood's favourite villain in the 90s, then into the B movies and late TV gold of his final years. This book goes through Hopper's credits, the TV appearances (Medic, 24, Crash), his classic movies (Easy Rider, The Last Movie, American Friend, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet), lesser known classics (Tracks, Mad Dog Morgan, River's Edge), odd ball curiosities (White Star, Human Highway, Bloodbath), lost forgotten gems (Last Days of Frankie the Fly, Blackout, Catchfire) and everything in between. This is the ultimate guide to the screen work of Dennis Hopper, one of the most exciting and charismatic actors the world has ever seen.

A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts. Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. With contributions from agnès B and Sean O’Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris’s influential work in depth for the first time.
