Dennis Wise is one of the best-loved British footballers in the Premiership. This cheeky London lad was one of the infamous London crazy gang, whose wild pranks hit the headlines but who defied the odds by beating giants Liverpool to take the FA Cup Final in 1988. Since then he has moved to Chelsea where as skipper he has led the team up the Premiership ladder and this year won two cups. But things haven't always gone so smoothly, Dennis nearly went to prison after being falsely accused of attacking a taxi driver and he has had his fair share of battles with managers, including Terry Venebles and Glenn Hoddle. Shepherds gathered their flowing robes to hurry to Him; the Magi braved deserts and mountains to find Him; in the blazing noonday sun a defeated Samaritan woman came to Him; a skeptic exclaimed, "my Lord and my God" when he found Him. And today millions on every continent acknowledge with the Apostle Paul that He is "the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). Wise men still seek Him; and those who seek find more than they ever imagined. For in Jesus Christ, and Him alone, are to be found forgiveness, inward peace, joys in life today, the promises of life eternal. The Magi found Him as a young child with Mary His mother. We find Him today as the living Christ, clothed with glory and honor and seated at the right hand of His Father in heaven. He is there because He finished the work He came to do on earth. Of His coming the Bible says, "He was made in the likeness of men: and... He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him... that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow... and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Philippians 2:7-11). While it is true that wise men still seek Him, it is more wonderfully true that He still seeks us-whoever we may be. Now, today, from His place in the heavenlies comes His divine invitation: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him and he with Me" (Revelation 3:20). If the President sent you an official invitation, you would surely accept. The Babe of Bethlehem who is now the Christ of Glory is inviting you today. The door is the door of your heart. May you know what it is to respond; and may all His spiritual blessings be yours this Christmas.
Conversations with the Wise Aunt: The Secret to Being Strong as a Teenager and Preparing for Success as an Adult
The idea for Conversations with the Wise Aunt was inspired by a story Dr. Coates's best friend told him. When his friend was 12, his uncle took him out for breakfast and told him what to expect during his teen years. He described the physical changes. He talked about peer pressure, risk-taking behavior and the consequences of sex, drugs and alcohol. Afterward, his uncle said, "Now I want you to promise me something. When your friends want you to go along with them and something inside you doesn't feel right, I want you to stop and think about what could happen. I want you to remember the things we talked about. Will you do that?"His friend said this talk with this caring adult was the most important conversation of his life, that it helped him steer clear of all kinds of trouble during his teen years. The authors' research confirms that few adults received such a talk when they were young, and today it's still rare for parents to do a good job of coaching their teens about what to expect. Since most parents didn't get this kind of coaching themselves, they don't have a model for how to approach it. There's a lot of ground to cover, and teens these days face different challenges. Most parents just don't feel prepared to give the best advice. The authors wrote this book for teen girls to give them the benefit of an even richer "heads-up" mentoring than his friend received. It's a series of upbeat, engaging stories about Trisha and her aunt Maria, who guides her during adolescence. It features not one, but several conversations. The book can be used as a template for parents to prepare for discussions with their teen daughter, or they can give the book to her to supplement the discussions. All the topics are critical, and some of them are addressed nowhere else. Taken together, the insights can give a teen girl a significant edge as she prepares for a happy, successful life as an adult.

The film career of Dennis Hopper spans half a century, beginning in the mid 1950s and ending in the new millennium upon his death. Hopper had a strange but brilliant career on the screen, starting in the golden age of James Dean and John Wayne, going through the Corman B movies of the 1960s, the turbulent but brilliant 1970s, his big comeback in the 1980s, to his days as Hollywood's favourite villain in the 90s, then into the B movies and late TV gold of his final years. This book goes through Hopper's credits, the TV appearances (Medic, 24, Crash), his classic movies (Easy Rider, The Last Movie, American Friend, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet), lesser known classics (Tracks, Mad Dog Morgan, River's Edge), odd ball curiosities (White Star, Human Highway, Bloodbath), lost forgotten gems (Last Days of Frankie the Fly, Blackout, Catchfire) and everything in between. This is the ultimate guide to the screen work of Dennis Hopper, one of the most exciting and charismatic actors the world has ever seen.

Dennis Potter is the most well-known, respected and controversial television dramatist Britain has ever produced. Plays and serials such as The Singing Detective and Pennies From Heaven received huge critical acclaim whilst always attracting audiences in their millions. This book will critically analyse both the strengths and the weaknesses of Potter's oeuvre, whilst investigating his status as both an 'author' and a 'celebrity'. Re-examining the drama, it foregrounds its ambiguities and contradictions, whilst clarifying the complex mixture of themes, styles and techniques that produced its distinctive and often provocative appeal.

A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts. Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. With contributions from agnès B and Sean O’Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris’s influential work in depth for the first time.

Dennis Potter's death in 1994 deprived British television of its most controversial figure. Potter was a prolific writer of genius. Yet while his subversive television plays, such as Pennies from Heaven and The Singing Detective, scandalized and delighted the nation, they also made him the butt of the tabloids, who nicknamed him 'Dirty Den' for his 1989 serial Blackeyes.Humphrey Carpenter, acclaimed biographer of Tolkien, Auden, Pound, Britten and Robert Runcie, interviewed everyone who came close to Potter, and had exclusive access to Potter's archives, including the many unmade television and film scripts. Carpenter portrays a very different Potter from the aggressive public image: a deeply shy and reclusive man, who was psychologically as well as physically scarred by the illness which struck him down at the age of twenty-six. Potter was a man with a vast interest in sex but also a terrible loathing of it, thanks to an appalling experience he suffered in childhood.Potter was a man much gossiped about. Carpenter's remarkable biography establishes the extraordinary truth behind the rumours; describes Potter's strange, obsessive relationships with women such as Gina Bellman, who played Blackeyes; and gives a vivid portrait of the backstage dramas and fights behind Potter's screen triumphs. 'What is valuable about this book is that it reveals Potter's real private life, which barely features in his plays ... A wonderfully vivid portrait of the man: his generosity and cruelty, his coarseness and tenderness, and the thwarted sexual yearning that underlay everything.' Lynn Barber, Daily Telegraph

Dennis Brain is recognized as perhaps the greatest horn player the world has known. He helped rescue the horn from the obscurity in which it had languished for over a century, and revived the public's faith in it as a major solo instrument. Brain restored to the concert platform concertos by Mozart and Haydn, and inspired contemporary composers to write for the horn, most notably the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings by Benjamin Britten, composed during World War II, a piece which is now central to the repertoire of tenors and horn players. Brain died at the tragically young age of thirty-six in a car crash. The beauty of his playing and his untimely death captured the public imagination like no horn player before or since. This biography was reissued thirty years after his death, and includes a discography. The book also contains an appreciation by Benjamin Britten.'A clear account of Dennis Brain's brilliant career ...' Times Literary Supplement'...an absorbing and extremely well-written account of the orchestral scene in England.'
