Descended from Earls and the Kings of Scotland, Elizabeth Weems married Thomas Bailey of Londonderry, Ireland in 1780 in Orange County, North Carolina. From there, the family moved to Baileyton, Tennessee with her parents and siblings; named after the brother of Thomas Bailey, Claudius. In the years that followed the family spread southward and westward to all the states across the nation. They fought in every war; the Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, World War 1 and 2, Korean, and Vietnam. They soon forgot their beginnings in castles across the ocean and settled into such occupations as farmers, lawyers, accountants, doctors and teachers. Many of the Bailey men were also Freemasons. This is the first monograph to evaluate Elizabeth Bowen’s ‘verbal painting’, and the first to acknowledge the influence of the East Kent landscape in her novels. Drawing on the work of critics and on Bowen’s own essays and articles, Hirst introduces Bowen to the reader, outlining the range of her literary work and elaborating on Bowen’s advice that the reader needs to work at understanding her prose. She examines Bowen’s use of light and the eye from the perspective of neuropsychology, before considering the importance to Bowen of place. She discusses her ‘verbal painting’, drawing parallels with different genres (Post-Impressionism, Surrealism, Futurism, Collage) and artists (Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Giorgio de Chirico, Umberto Boccioni, Paul Nash), and the films of French Left Bank Cinema directors (Alain Resnais, Jean Cocteau). Finally, using the neologism ‘dyslocution’ for Bowen’s fragmented syntax, she suggests this has been influenced by French syntax and by poetic techniques, all of which combine in a Cubist style.
Abbeville, South Carolina was a center of Revolutionary action and often saw heated battles between the Patriots and the Loyalists who tried to regain the large village for England. Amongst the settlers were Captain Thomas Weems and his wife Elizabeth Redfearn. They owned many slaves, brought to the marriage from the Redfearn plantation in Virginia, and had a large family to run their large plantation south of the village. Today the name of Weems has spread across the southern states and is well known for both white and black farmers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and soldiers. The Weems treated their slaves well and built a school to teach them; a rarity amongst slave owners. When the Civil War was over, many stayed in Abbeville and the surrounding others, while others went to Georgia, Alabama and points west.
After more than 20 years in a City vault, designers David and Elizabeth Emmanuel open the four locked trunks which reveal the story behind their creation of Princess Diana's wedding dress. After more than 20 years in a City vault, designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel open the four locked trunks which reveal the story behind their creation of Princess Diana’s wedding dress. The contents of the trunks paint an astonishingly personal and intimate portrait of the incredible painstaking preparation and rehearsal for one of the history's most famous wedding dresses. The treasure ranges from original sketches and fabric swatches, to a spare silk umbrella and shoes, and even the handbag Elizabeth Emanuel carried with her on the day containing smelling salts and glucose tablets. Unseen photographs of the preparation and rehearsals chart the build up to the big day.

Books about injury prevention tend to explain only the principles and leave it to the practitioner to apply them in the course of their everyday interactions. Thus there is a large gap, between "what works in principle" and "how to make it work in practice". The purpose of this book is to translate the principles of injury prevention to the specific circumstances that community workers face. The GRIP Guide contains eight modules. The first module gives an overview of the principles of injury prevention and safety promotion. Modules two through six describe how to address the five categories / types of injuries (burns, falls, drowning, transport injuries, poisoning). Module seven provides a generic approach that covers other unintentional injuries and module eight deals with the response to intentional injuries (violence). This guide takes the form of a series of exercises that reader can use when working with community members to promote community participation and intersectoral collaboration as a means of achieving a safe environment.
