In this highly readable and engaging commentary on the Gospel of Luke, Diane Chen introduces her readers to the particularities of the world of Jesus, steeped in Jewish history and convictions yet threatened by Roman power and hegemony. In story after story, Chen brings to focus the diligence of a faithful historian, the artistry of a masterful storyteller, and the courage of an insightful theologian behind this well-loved Gospel. In it Luke presents God's plan of salvation in the birth and death, word and deed, and identity and mission of Jesus of Nazareth--a plan that is unapologetically counterintuitive: the proud is humbled and the lowly is lifted up; the ostracized is embraced and the religious elite is rejected. Modern readers will receive more than a lucid explanation of the biblical text; they will be challenged to find their own place in Jesus' story, one that encourages self-reflection and necessitates a personal response. ""This new commentary on Luke further establishes Diane Chen's credentials as scholar committed to the church. While sensitively attending to the interaction of text and context, she is also attuned to the impact of the text upon faith and praxis. The work deftly balances exegetical, historical, and pastoral insights, and is a readable and reliable guide to the Gospel of Luke. More than that, her love for this gospel and her passionate commitment to its narrative of salvation shines through the pages of this commentary."" --Marianne Meye Thompson, George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary ""Like Luke, who portrays Jesus as the Messiah on a journey to seek and save the lost, Diane Chen, a knowledgeable and delightful 'tour guide, ' takes her readers on an exciting journey to discover the meaning of the gospel for all in the Gospel of Luke. She asks important questions of text and contexts, and provides the best scholarly research judiciously and lucidly. Her personal and critical reflection of theological themes exemplifies the best practice of biblical interpretation--fusing scriptural and modern horizons, and articulating life and ministry applications. This engaging commentary informs and inspires."" --John Yieh, Molly Laird Downs Professor of New Testament, Virginia Theological Seminary Diane G. Chen is Professor of New Testament at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University, St. Davids, Pennsylvania. She is the author of God as Father in Luke-Acts (2006) and Let Me More of Their Beauty See: Reading Familiar Verses in Context (2011).

"God as Father in Luke-Acts" argues that 'Father' is the central image for God in Luke-Acts by tracing a line of continuity in the portrayal of God as Israel's merciful, faithful, and authoritative Father from the Old Testament to Luke-Acts and its Second Temple Jewish milieu. The fulfillment of the promises to Abraham, David, and Israel in Jesus is best understood as the fatherly actions of Israel's God. Furthermore, the striking similarities between God as Father and Augustus as "Pater Patriae" undermine the assertion of the Lukan view of the Roman Empire as highly polemical.

Life experiences grow us into who we are, by how we choose to think about them. Our experiences are a shared landscape of the heart. The things that differentiate our landscapes are names, eras, culture, geography, and our interpretation but one thing we all share are the strong feelings. We can relate to each others' stories and experiences because we have experienced the same emotions; we only have to change the name, time, and/or place.

Living Values Education Activities for Children Ages 8-14, Book 1
"Living Values Education Activities for Children Ages 8-14, Book 1" is an updated and expanded edition of the original "Living Values Activities for Children Ages 8-14" resource. Book 1, and its companion volume, Book 2, offer a rich variety of values activities to help young people explore and develop values. The eight values units of Book 1 are Peace I, Respect 1, Love and Caring, Tolerance, Honesty, Happiness, Responsibility, and Simplicity and Caring for our Earth and Her Oceans. Book 2 contains an additional eight values units: Peace II, Respect II, Cooperation, Humility, Compassion, Another Value We Love, Freedom and Unity. The Living Values Activities books are part of the curricular resources offered by the Association of Living Values Education International. Growing from strength to strength, Living Values Education (LVE) has enriched the lives and educational experience of young people and educators around the world since its initial pilot in February 1997. A global endeavor dedicated to nurturing and educating hearts as well as minds, LVE provides an approach and tools to help people connect with their own values and "live" them. Educators and facilitators engage students in exploring and choosing their own personal values while developing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to "live" those values. A values-based learning community fosters positive relationships, quality learning and quality education. With Living Values Education, educators and students become co-creators of a culture of peace and respect. A wide range of modalities and activities are utilized in the lessons. Reflection points share the importance of valuing all people, discussions help students grow in empathy, role playing builds conflict resolution skills, and a myriad of facilitated cognitive and experiential activities increase positive social and emotional skills. Reflective, imagining and artistic activities encourage students to explore their own ideas, creativity and inner gifts. Mind mapping values and anti-values builds cognitive understanding of the practical effect of values and encourages a values-based perspective for analyzing events and creating solutions. Other activities stimulate awareness of personal and social responsibility and awareness of social justice. Students are invited to fill themselves with peace, respect and love and increase their ability to focus through relaxation/focusing exercises. Educators are encouraged to utilize their own rich heritage while integrating values into everyday activities and the curriculum. Given the increasing negative influences young people are exposed and subjected to, the updated books include activities to help them understand the influences, stay safe, and increase their motivation and capacity to be a positive force for good. A few of the areas addressed are dealing with bullying in assertive and proactive ways, reflecting on and creating their own guidelines for involvement in social media, learning how to encourage themselves in positive ways and manage their emotions, be safe from being entrapped, and develop a voice and positive social skills to create inclusion and respect. Educators are welcome to participate in LVE professional development workshops. Creating a values-based atmosphere in which young people are loved, valued, respected, understood and safe helps students "catch" the values being shared. The sixteen values units in the two updated Living Values Activities books include other related universal values such as kindness, fairness, determination, integrity, appreciation, diversity, gratitude, inclusion and social justice.

The above warning, sent to all allegedly incapacitated seniors in the state of Virginia, summarizes the nightmare that can befall senior citizens anywhere in the United States as a result of involuntary conservatorship or guardianship proceedings. Statutes originally designed to help elderly friends and relatives who are unable to look after their own personal or financial needs are now being increasingly abused by calculating heirs to direct the transfer of family assets to themselves-with the courts' blessings. Based on fifty-five cases drawn from courtrooms across America and the author's own bitter experience, The Retirement Nightmare describes what can happen to competent senior citizens when such proceedings are filed against them by relatives or other so-called protectors in the social welfare community. Dr. Armstrong, who was forced to battle her own siblings in a million-dollar court battle to place her competent mother in an involuntary conservatorship, reveals how these arcane conservatorship and guardianship codes function in our courts today; unfortunately, as the author learned firsthand, the actual application of these codes is determined almost solely by the competence and attitudes of individual judges and investigators. She highlights the key problem areas common to the codes that should be changed and recommends ways that seniors can protect themselves to preserve their personal and financial freedom in their retirement years. She also suggests alternatives to conservatorships and guardianships that exist in every state to help the elderly with various aspects of daily living, such as balancing checkbooks, paying bills, grocery shopping, preparing meals, etc. This breakthrough book exposes the secretive world of involuntary "protective proceedings" and more importantly gives seniors the tools they need to protect themselves from this predatory litigation.

The central aim of this book is to replicate the study carried out by Piaget on the acquisition of the concept of rules in children, in order to find out whether, with the passing of the years in his work "Moral Judgement in Children", the data he found on the acquisition of the principle of morality is still relevant today. The study covers a number of authors, theorists and researchers who have emphasised their research into the principle of ethics and the foundation of morality. In analysing the psychological origins of children's moral development, we sought support from Kolhberg's theory and, above all, from Jean Piaget, the main author of this study. We begin with a brief concept, origin and functions of ethics and morality. We highlight the perspectives on moral development, before moving on to the study of Piaget and moral research. We expand our discussions to include a study of the principle of reversibility, also by Jean Piaget. The book contributes to educators, psychologists, students and professionals in related fields who seek to study and learn about children's moral development.

"Living Values Education Activities for Children Ages 3-7, Book 1" is an updated and expanded edition of the original "Living Values Activities for Children Ages 3-7" resource. Book 1 offers a rich variety of values activities to help children explore and develop values. The eight values units of Book 1 are Peace I, Respect 1, Love and Caring, Tolerance, Honesty, Happiness, Responsibility, and Simplicity and Caring for our Earth and Her Oceans. The Living Values Education Activities in this book incorporate a variety of ways to introduce, explore and teach values. The Peace Unit begins with a commentary which encourages children to imagine what a peaceful world would be like. Art activities, playing with peace puppets and the making of a peace tent help them bring some of their ideas into life. Reflection points explain values in simple ways. Stories, songs, sharing, and teaching skills are combined with playing, art, movement and role playing. Quietly Being exercises help children learn to self-regulate and fill themselves with peace, love and respect. In this peaceful, nurturing and enjoyable approach, personal social and emotional skills develop as well as positive, constructive social skills. These values activities can be used by elementary school teachers, nursery and pre-school teachers, parents, caregivers and day-care center staff. This book reflects the experience of Living Values Education educators ... that children love to explore. They are naturally receptive, enthusiastic about learning, and spontaneously caring and creative. They thrive in a positive, nurturing, values-based atmosphere where they feel safe, and easily assimilate learning about peace, conflict resolution and the giving of respect and love. Consciously modeling peace, respect, caring and honesty, and teaching about values is increasingly important as children in today's world are exposed to violence and inappropriate models of behavior at younger and younger ages. The Living Values Education Activities books are part of the curricular resources offered by the Association of Living Values Education International. Growing from strength to strength, Living Values Education (LVE) has enriched the lives and educational experience of young people and educators around the world since its initial pilot in February 1997.
