Dion DiMucci rose to Rock and Roll fame in the late 1950s with three top-forty hits as the lead singer of Dion and the Belmonts, “Runaround Sue,” “The Wanderer,” and “A Teenager in Love.” Later embarking on a solo career, his anthem “Abraham, Martin, and John” once again topped the charts in 1968, one of Dion’s twelve gold hit records. In the 1970s and 1980s he turned to folk, blues, and gospel, earning a grammy nomination in 1985. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 along with the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and the Temptations. In subsequent albums he has collaborated with the likes of Paul Simon, Lou Reed, KD Lang, Eric Clapton, and Mark Knopfler, garnering another Grammy nomination in 2006. In this collection of conversations with close friend Adam Jablin, Dion recalls his childhood growing up in the Bronx, his early rise to fame, overcoming heroin addiction, his sixty-year marriage, and, of course, the artists who have had a profound influence on his music, among them Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, and BB King. Illustrated with over 200 color and black and white photos, this book not only tells the story of a remarkable career in music but will also be a look back over sixty years of rock and roll history.

Dion Boucicault was a prominent playwright and prolific translator and adapter of foreign plays and novels for the Victorian commercial theatre for over forty years. Born in Dublin, he achieved his first West End success with London Assurance in 1841. His work frankly catered to contemporary taste and fell rapidly into neglect after his death in 1890. His lively observation of humanity in many moods and his unerring sense of what works on the stage have saved his plays from oblivion: there have been successful revivals in our own times by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, Belfast's Lyric, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. The selection of his work in this volume stresses Boucicault's consummate craft as a writer for the theatre in the age of actor-managers and melodrama. It also reminds us of that Irish verve, charm and adroitness which made him the best playwright of his generation in England and America as well as Ireland. Arguably the father of both the Irish and American drama, his characteristic plotting and taste for sensation suggest that another of his heirs was the early movie industry. This selection contains the great success of his youth, London Assurance, together with his Preface; his durable version of the melodrama, The Corsican Brothers; his exciting American plantation play, The Octoroon, with both its endings; and his fine Irish plays, The Colleen Bawn, The Shaughraun, and Robert Emmet. Dates of first performances and cast lists are given, as are the songs, music and a glossary for the Irish plays. There is also a selected bibliographical checklist. This selection of Boucicault's vast opus has been chosen and introduced by Professor Andrew Parkin.

Deirdre McFeely presents the first book-length critical study of Dion Boucicault, placing his Irish plays in the context of his overall career. The book undertakes a detailed examination of the reception of the plays in the New York-London-Dublin theatre triangle which Boucicault inhabited. Interpreting theatre history as a sociocultural phenomenon that closely approximates social history, McFeely examines the different social and political worlds in which the plays were produced, demonstrating that the complex politics of reception of the plays cannot be separated from the social and political implications of colonialism at that time. The study argues for a shift in focus from the politics of the plays, and their author, to the politics of the auditorium and the press, or the politics of reception. It is within that complex and shifting field of stage, theatre and public media that Boucicault's performance as playwright, actor and publicist is interpreted.
