Memories of My Youth in National Socialist Germany: Introduction by Stephen Mitford Goodson

In Mein Kampf Adolf Hitler criticised the then existing educational system for placing excessive emphasis on the accumulation of useless knowledge, most of which is soon forgotten. Instead he advocated curtailment of the scholastic programme and the employment of the extra hours, made available, in physical training and the development of character, self-confidence, willpower and a sense of civic responsibility. More advanced teaching in the sciences, for example, would be provided for those who wished to specialise in such subjects, while in the teaching of history the race problem would occupy a dominant position. In Hitler's view the ultimate purpose of such an education would be to inculcate in the youth a racial instinct, the understanding of the racial ideal and the National Socialist Weltanschauung. Such an education would ensure the preservation of the German race and future cultural progress. On 20 April 1934 this vision of Hitler became a reality with the establishment of the first Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalten or Napola schools. In this rare memoir the reader will find a first-hand account of life in two Napola schools, as experienced by Fleming, Dirk van de Walle. Also related are his military training in the Waffen SS and his subsequent capture and internment in American prisoner of war camps.
International Climate Policy to Combat Global Warming

International Climate Policy to Combat Global Warming

Dirk T.G. Rübbelke

In their pursuit of policies to combat global warming, countries will find that they may also receive additional benefits which are not directly associated with the primary aim. These ancillary benefits are likely to include, for example, a reduction in pollution as a result of carbon containment policies. International Climate Policy to Combat Global Warming is one of the first books which analyses climate policy, taking account of ancillary as well as primary benefits. The author integrates ancillary benefits into the theory and explores the implications for international policy measures. Because of the private character of ancillary benefits, the author is able to treat climate policy as an impure public good which in turn has an impact on the efficient climate protection level. He highlights the general failures of the standard approach to climate policy design and goes on to propose a new approach to international negotiations on climate change. He suggests a flexible matching scheme which would help overcome free-rider incentives and which would have considerable advantages over traditional co-operative designs.By proposing a novel framework for the analysis of, and solution to, the problem of global warming, this book will be welcomed by environmental and ecological economists, policymakers and researchers of political science.

Essentials of Ultrasonography

Essentials of Ultrasonography

This textbook is designed for physicians, students, and radiographers who wish to learn ultrasonography concisely and comprehensively. All general aspects of diagnostic ultrasound are covered. The text encompasses principally those disorders that are encountered in the daily routine of scanning, but mention is also made of rarer condi tions which must be considered in differential diagnosis. The authors present the subject systematically and practically, and with the facility of quick reference in mind. For didactic purposes they use many flow-charts, tables and teaching points. The book will be invaluable for learning and for scanning, as well as for reporting. Dr. Dirk Pickuth, who has been Clinical Research Fellow in our Diagnostic Imaging Department, conceived the idea of this international publication. As the main author he was supported by his British, Italian, and Indian colleagues, and the four physicians col laborated in this Department most amicably, which has resulted in this highly com mendable book. I wish it every success. Prof. V. R. McCready Chief, Diagnostic Imaging Department The Royal Marsden Hospital London, United Kingdom Foreword II Ultrasound still continues to develop, with the clinical spectrum of its application becoming ever wider. Accordingly, the number of ultrasound textbooks has increased considerably in recent years. The question of which is the right ultrasound textbook for the beginner or for the more experienced sonographer is very difficult to answer, because many of these books are impractical by virtue of their complexity and size.

This volume marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the groundbreaking fashion designer who bridged the exclusivity and sex appeal of fashion and the universality and masculinity of sports. One of the much-written-about Antwerp Six group of influential cutting-edge Belgian fashion designers, Dirk Bikkembergs audaciously chose to focus his designs on the intersection between fashion and sport, particularly pieces designed for or inspired by soccer. Seeing sports as a universal language, Bikkembergs designed haute couture for athletes who are themselves already aesthetic icons of masculinity. The first designer to hold a fashion show in a sports stadium, Bikkembergs uses his local soccer team as a laboratory for styling with the latest fabric technology, creating designs that are sexy yet comfortably flexible, from exclusive jackets to high-performance underwear and sporty street shoes. In this handsome book, all of his one-of-a-kind designs are showcased in photographs taken in various locations around the world.
