Published in 1952, this memoir portrays life inside a politically prominent southern family from Reconstruction to the New Deal. Dolly Blount Lamar describes her father’s struggle to earn respect and political clout during the Reconstruction era. She details her own social life in Washington, D.C., providing intimate portraits of the wives of Presidents and members of Congress, lobbyists, radical Reconstructionists, and leaders from the Civil War who came together to make the new Union work. Lamar describes her years as president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, her role in electing Sidney Lanier to the Hall of Fame at New York University, and the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial controversy of the 1920s. The memoir closes with her later years of life in her hometown of Macon, Georgia.

You've likely heard of the performer Dolly Parton. But do you know where this dazzling songwriter and musician draws her roots? As one of twelve children growing up in rural Tennessee, Dolly was determined to be seen and heard. From her front porch to her church choir, every stage was an opportunity to perform and share her many talents. While balancing farm chores with schoolwork, Dolly never lost sight of her dreams, composing her first song at age five and performing at the Grand Ole Opry at age thirteen. With lilting language and vibrant artwork, this childhood story captures the unique gifts of Dolly Parton, while also honoring the measures of her success: resilience, confidence, family, and kindness.

In her superbly accomplished novel, Anita Brookner proves that she is our most profound observer of women's lives, posing questions about feminine identity and desire with a stylishness that conveys an almost sensual pleasure. From the moment Jane Manning first meets her aunt Dolly, she is both fascinated and appalled. Where Jane is tactful and shy, Dolly is flamboyant and unrepentantly selfish, a connoisseur of fine things, an exploiter of wealthy people. But as the exigencies of family bring Jane and Dolly together, Brookner shows us that we may end up loving people we cannot bring ourselves to like -- and that this paradox makes love all the more precious and miraculous.

What price would you pay for your own peace and sanity, or for reconciliation with loved ones?It is 1928 in a small rural farming community where New York borders Connecticut. Dolly is about to graduate from high school with big plans for her future, but when her mother and older sister each file for their divorces, the whole family is forced to answer some hard questions.
