'A Nation of Beggars'?

'A Nation of Beggars'?

Donal A. Kerr

This book concerns Lord John Russell's efforts to improve the lot and status of Irish Catholics by changes in the landlord and tenant system and particualarly by improving the status of the Catholic Church. It is the first full scholarly account of the role of the Catholic Church in the Great Famine of 1846 and its aftermath. Donal Kerr shows how the Famine and consequent evictions led to rural violence and assassination, culminating in the notorious murder of Major Mahon, which the local parish priest was accused of inciting and blessing. A savage campaign of denuciation in press and parliament, and the belief that Pope Pius IX had blessed the struggle of oppressed nationalities, led many priests to become involved in the lead-up to the Young Ireland Rebellion. These years, too, saw a sharpening of religious tensions as Professor Kerr's scholarly and incisive analysis charts the souring of relations between Church and State and the destruction of Lord John Russell's dream of bringing a golden age to Ireland.

This is the first full account of the role of the Irish Catholic Church in the Great Famine of 1846 and its aftermath. Donal Kerr shows how the Famine and the subsequent evictions led to rural violence and a spate of assassinations culminating in the murder of Major Mahon which the local parish priest was accused of inciting. Savage denunciations followed in press and parliament. In conjunction with the belief that Pope Pius IX had blessed the struggle of oppressednationalities, this led to many priests becoming involved in the run-up to the Young Ireland Rebellion. These years also saw a sharpening of religious tension as Protestant Evangelicals made an all-out effort to Protestantize Ireland. Professor Kerr has charted how the Famine and the violencesoured relations between the Church and State and ultimately destroyed Lord John Russell's dream of bringing a golden age to Ireland.

This book is the first to provide an account of the life of Rev. William Arderne Shoults (1839-1887) and his book collecting. It is also the first detailed examination of a true survivor, his book collection of some 5600 items, including medieval manuscripts, incunables, books on ecclesiastical history and primitive church rites and rituals, philology, bibliography, science, travel, and Arabic and Persian texts. The contents cover Shoults's early years at St. John's College, Cambridge University, his work in some of the poorer ritualistic parishes of London, his association with the Rev. Joseph Leycester Lyne (1837-1908), the controversial, enthusiastic, revivalist known as 'Father Ignatius', his work on Latin hymns, his marriage, and his travel overseas, which included visiting the Vatican Library. After Shoults's death at 48, his collection was gifted to Selwyn College, Dunedin, arriving in New Zealand in 1893. The survival of this collection is remarkable and it exists as a fine example of what a nineteenth-century curate could collect.
The Smoking Puzzle

The Smoking Puzzle

How do smokers evaluate evidence that smoking harms health? Some evidence suggests that smokers overestimate health risks from smoking. This book challenges this conclusion. The authors find that smokers tend to be overly optimistic about their longevity and future health if they quit later in life. Older adults' decisions to quit smoking require personal experience with the serious health impacts associated with smoking. Smokers over fifty revise their risk perceptions only after experiencing a major health shock--such as a heart attack. But less serious symptoms, such as shortness of breath, do not cause changes in perceptions. Waiting for such a jolt to occur is imprudent. The authors show that well-crafted messages about how smoking affects quality of life can greatly affect current perceptions of smoking risks. If smokers are informed of long-term consequences of a disease, and if they are told that quitting can indeed come too late, they are able to evaluate the risks of smoking more accurately, and act accordingly.

Everyone's Apocalypse attempts to respond to the request of Dei Verbum 22 that "Easy access to Sacred Scripture should be provided for all the faithful." In this easy-to-read introduction for beginners, modern scholarship and the Church's tradition meet to help readers understand and pray through this demanding part of God's Word.Following Ugo Vanni's proved structure, the two parts of the Apocalypse (chapters 1–3 and 4–22) are presented in seven chapters. The opening two chapters show John's vision of the Risen Jesus as Son of Man and his words to the seven churches of Asia Minor. Chapter three presents the vital section, full of worship, of the throne vision of God as creator and of Jesus, slaughtered and risen, as redeemer. The opening of the seven seals by the Lamb, the four horsemen, the Risen Jesus, the destruction wrought by the seven trumpets, the three signs of the Woman, the Dragon, and the seven angels with the seven bowls of wrath are dealt with in the next three chapters. The final chapter outlines the climax of the book. Harlot Babylon, the evil city, is judged and falls and, following the intervention of the bridegroom Lamb and the removal of God's enemies, the marriage of the Lamb reaches its fulfillment when the prepared wife becomes the possessed bride. In the imagery of this text, the kingdom has come.Uniquely, this book reads the entire Apocalypse in a nuptial manner. This is a love story. Jesus, the lover, following the pattern of Jewish marriage in the first century, helps his espoused wife, the seven churches, to persevere in their nuptial response of love to him, their first love. After coming through the tribulation, they finally become his beloved, possessed Bride, filled with glory. This eschatological union of love is humankind's destiny.

SET IN DUBLIN’S LIBERTIES, Estelle Birdy’s explosively original debut Ravelling channels the energies and agonies of young men let loose in the city, their city, navigating the tumultuous trajectory of youth and young manhood, where they balance their hopes with the harsh realities of their present. Hurtling between friendships, feuds, drug-deals, family and brushes with the law, this is modern Dublin as never before portrayed. Ravelling follows Deano, a weed-smoking hurling star, living with his aunt in an about-to-be-demolished flat; Hamza, a Pakistani Muslim atheist and precocious academic, who sells his ADHD drugs to the kids in a private school; Oisín, empathetic and iron-willed, who has begun to see his dead brother at the end of his bed; Congolese nature lover, Benit, who just wants to relax and hurl with the lads; Karl, a maybe-gay fashionista, dreaming of something better while immersing himself in his art. Bound by friendship, place and the memories of those who’ve died too soon, these young men grapple with race, class, sex, parties, poverty, violence and Garda harassment, all while wondering what it means to be a man in twenty-first century Ireland. ‘Ravelling masterfully evokes the fragility and beauty of human relationships. It’s funny, bold and bursting with love. There’s no moral here, just an ode to community, a burning sense of youth and a plea for a society pushed to the margins.’ KARL GEARY ‘A glorious novel, tough and hilarious and full of heart. What a writer! Every line sings from the page.’ DONAL RYAN ‘Written in fluent, truthful prose, with humour and empathy abounding.’ SEBASTIAN BARRY ‘A brilliantly profane, hilarious ride through the Liberties … Ravelling lays a sparkling new Dublin over the old. A revelation.’ LAUREN MACKENZIE

SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA BOOK AWARDLONGLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE "Beautiful and affecting" -- David Nicholls, author of One Day A moving novel of three men, each searching for something they have lost, from the award-winning and Man Booker nominated author Donal Ryan. For Farouk, family is all. He has protected his wife and daughter as best he can from the war and hatred that has torn Syria apart. If they stay, they will lose their freedom, will become lesser persons. If they flee, they will lose all they have known of home, for some intangible dream of refuge in some faraway land across the merciless sea. Lampy is distracted; he has too much going on in his small town life in Ireland. He has the city girl for a bit of fun, but she's not Chloe, and Chloe took his heart away when she left him. There's the secret his mother will never tell him. His granddad's little sniping jokes are getting on his wick. And on top of all that, he has a bus to drive; those old folks from the home can't wait all day. The game was always the lifeblood coursing through John's veins: manipulating people for his enjoyment, or his enrichment, or his spite. But it was never enough. The ghost of his beloved brother, and the bitter disappointment of his father, have shadowed him all his life. But now that lifeblood is slowing down, and he's not sure if God will listen to his pleas for forgiveness. Three men, searching for some version of home, their lives moving inexorably towards a reckoning that will draw them all together.

The core tenets of Christianity point towards the deep truth about ourselves, the truth that sets us free. In In a Landscape Redrawn, Bishop Donal Murray examines the place of faith in a world that increasingly views religious belief as antiquated and ‘doomed to extinction’. Rather than becoming despondent about the future of our faith, Bishop Murray encourages us to reassess our deeply personal relationship with God and to take consolation in the Good News of Christ. By first exploring what it means to be human, and then considering how Christianity illuminates our humanity, this book highlights how a profound respect for Gospel values can improve all facets of life both in the personal and the public spheres.

This memoire begins by charting a personal journey from a childhood spent in Howth, swimming in the cove and exploring the cliffs to Quaker boarding school in Waterford. Donal's studies took him from Dublin to Paris and Cambridge with graduate work in California and London. His decision to work on Africa began during university holidays in the Congo with his father who was serving in the United Nations in 1960. The School of Oriental and African Studies was the locus of Donal's entire career from Research Fellow to Professor of Political Studies. Many have paid tribute to his capacity to listen, observe and develop his own unique perspective. Equal homage has been paid to his role as a teacher. In his retirement, Donal began work on this story of an Irishman living abroad. As a mark of his persistent courage, he completed the text in the last months of his life, despite serious illness. The migrant travelled well.

The book recounts adventures: some on a tropical Brazilian island and some in merry sessions with the Irish uilleann pipes in and around Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Women--Brazilian and foreign-are ubiquitous. The style is a light-hearted pastiche of academic writing, though some of the adventures (and misadventures) are quite alarming. Many interesting insights into Brazil appear--some inspired from Jean De Lery's fascinating 16th-century account, Histoire d'Un Voyage Faict en Terre du Bresil. The text is illustrated throughout with the titles and opening bars of traditional tunes. There is a wealth of poetry and fun in these titles. This is a unique feature: the esoteric collection of tunes alone makes it a reference for all musicians with a sense of humour. It is also unusual in the degree to which other languages figure. The book is about real people in the real world and Portuguese, Spanish, French, Gaelic, and Latin (!) all figure in addition to English, with translations where necessary.
