Staging Politics

Staging Politics

This fresh and original study analyses how power presents itself in dramatic performance in these two increasingly economically and politically important continents. Emotion and politics play a hugely important role in the politics of Asia and Africa but, as this book sets out, too much of western political research into the subject concentrates on apparent deficiencies - on the weakness of institutions, defects in the bureaucracy or markets, poor management of elections, absent judicial autonomy. Viewing political performance through Western eyes in this way - where politics is primarily about the naked pursuit of power and interests - can lead to a misunderstanding of how politics actually works in Africa and Asia, where process plays a far more important role. Thus performance, drama and emotion are far more integral to political outcome there than in the West. By concentrating on this new perspective the authors, each a recognised specialist in one or more states in Asia and Africa, avoid this trap and offer a coherent picture of the impact political performance has on the culture and politics of these societies and how they function.
DONALD J. TRUMP President of the United States
America's Founding Fathers believed in God and His correct way to survive and thrive. God chose them (with flaws) to draft the U.S. Constitution and show citizens the way to greatness. They warned citizens to not allow domineering politicians and bureaucrats to rule them. Now, Suicidal Misplaced Faith (in man, not in God) has the U.S.A. in a man-made mess that America's "brightest" can't fix. On life support since praying believers prompted God to help defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016, President Trump (called and chosen by God) has worked nonstop to distance us from Socialism and lead us to new greatness. Our President is flawed, but he is a tough, principled non-politician who has bravely withstood a barrage of "fiery darts" from the Left for three years. Our continuing status as a Free Nation Under God depends upon his reelection in 2020 - which can be won by the Right - IF American believers humble ourselves, pray, seek God's face, and turn away from wickedness. God will hear our prayers for America and our President, and He will heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14) Julian C. Long: Atypical Teacher-Preacher. 50+ years - military veteran: Foot soldier, Avionics Tech., Combat Air Crewman, Good Conduct Medal, Honorable Discharge. - B.A., English, University of SC, M.Div, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. - Teacher: English, Spanish, Bible, and Psychology - private schools and Tech College - Headmaster. Once President, Headmasters' Assn. - Student Pastor, rural North Carolina. - Minister of Education/Associate Pastor, and Pastor. - Seek to expose both liars and Truth tellers equally. SELF FIRST - Peeves: Spiritually blind "leaders", lawlessness, oppressive government, self-absorbed politicians and their followers. - Married 59+ years (Betty). One son, one daughter, 3 grandchildren. Considers "Abortion on Demand" a grievous sin, ashamed of citizens who practice it and politicians and "Judges" who approve of it
Who? What? Why?: Who is Donald Trump?
On 8 November 2016, some 130 million people in the USA cast their vote to decide who should become their next President. The candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, had fought a campaign that had divided their country more than any previous election. The resulting Trump presidency would not only affect the citizens of the USA, but billions of people around the world. Aimed at young tweens and teens, this book gives readers a balanced and accessible account of Donald Trump's campaign for the presidency and his uncompromising and highly controversial policies and behaviour as President.
Professional Legal Ethics

Professional Legal Ethics

Donald Nicolson; Julian Webb

Oxford University Press

Ethics and regulation have become catchwords of the late 1990s, yet relatively little has been written about the ethical discourse and regulation of the legal professions in England and Wales. This book represents the first attempt to subject the ethical discourse of the English legal professions to in-depth analysis and sustained critique. Drawing on insights from moral philosophy, social theory, the sociology of the legal profession, public law theories of regulation, and the extensive American literature on lawyers' ethics, it argues that, in seeking to provide definitive answers to particular problems of professional conduct, professional legal ethics has failed to deliver an approach which requires lawyers actively to engage with the ethical issues raised by legal practice. Through an analysis of the core issues facing lawyers, the authors locate this failure in the profession's reliance on a liberal and adversarial role morality that conceptualises the ethical values of human dignity, autonomy and equality in a formalistic and narrowly legalistic manner. This encourages lawyers to overlook the real invasions of these values so often wrought by upholding clients legal rights, and to ignore the competing claims of affected third parties, the wider community and the environment In seeking to move beyond critique, the authors develop throughout the book a contextual approach to individual ethical decision-making and outline a range of institutional, regulatory and educational reforms which, they suggest, could form the basis for a more ethical brand of professionalism. Professional Legal Ethics: Critical Interrogations is a wide-ranging and thought-provoking analysis written for lawyers, ethicists and policy-makers interested in this neglected area of professional ethics and regulation.

The Short, Swift Time of Gods on Earth

The Short, Swift Time of Gods on Earth

Donald Bahr; Juan Smith; William Smith Allison; Julian Hayden

In the spring of 1935, at Snaketown, Arizona, two Pima Indians recounted and translated their entire traditional creation narrative. Juan Smith, reputedly the last tribesman with extensive knowledge of the Pima version of this story, spoke and sang while William Smith Allison translated into English and Julian Hayden, an archaeologist, recorded Allison's words verbatim. The resulting document, the "Hohokam Chronicles", is the most complete natively articulated Pima creation narrative ever written and a rare example of a single-narrator myth. Now this extraordinary work, composed of thirty-six separate stories, is presented in its entirety for the first time. Beautifully expressed, the narrative constitutes a kind of scripture for a native church, beginning with the creation of the universe out of the void and ending with the establishment in the sixteenth century of present-day villages. Central to the story is the murder/resurrection of a god-man, Siuuhu, who summoned the Pimas and Papagos (Tohono O'odham) as his army of vengeance and brought about the conquest of his murderers, the ancient Hohokam. Donald Bahr extensively annotates the text and supplements it with other Pima-Papago versions of similar stories. Important as a social and historic document, this book adds immeasurably to the growing body of Native American literature and to our knowledge of the development of Pima-Papago culture.
