Dr. Seuss's infectious rhymes, fanciful creatures, and roundabout plots not only changed the way children read but imagined the world. And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, Green Eggs and Ham,The Cat and the Hat, these and other classics have sold hundreds of millions of copies and entertained children and adults for decades. After graduating from Dartmouth, Theodor Geisel used his talents as an ad-man, political provocateur, and social satirist, gradually but irrevocably turning to children's books. Theodor SEUSS Geisel tells the unlikely story of this remarkable transformation. In this compact and engrossing biography, Donald Pease reveals the evolution of Dr. Seuss's creative persona while offering an honest appraisal of his life. The book also features many of Dr. Seuss's lesser-known illustrations, including college drawings, insecticide ads, and wartime political cartoons-all of which offer a glimpse of his early artistic style and the visual origins of the more famous creatures that later populated his children's books. As Pease traces the full arc of Dr. Seuss's prolific career, he combines close textual readings of many of Dr. Seuss's works with a unique look at their genesis to shed new light on the enduring legacy of America's favorite children's book author.

Dr. Seuss' infectious rhymes, his blue-tufted, strong-willed creatures, and his knack for pithy, roundabout plots have been entertaining children and adults for decades. And as Donald Pease shows in this marvelous biography, the seemingly haphazard trajectory of Theodor Geisel's life bears a close resemblance to the zigzag plot lines of his children's books. Here is an engaging look at a man who indeed lived a zigzag life, by turns a cartoonist, ad agency artist (for Flit bug killer), author, caricaturist, documentary-film writer and producer, political cartoonist, and editor. Pease follows Geisel's life from his childhood in Massachusetts, to his sacking from the editorship of Dartmouth's humor magazine, to the publication of And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street--after 17 rejections--which finally launched him on the career for which he is best known. It was a career marked by whimsy. Geisel began work on Green Eggs and Ham, for instance, only after Bennett Cerf, his editor at Random House, wagered that he could not write a children's book that used no more than fifty different words. Geisel won, and the result was a series of works over the next ten years--How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Yertle the Turtle, The Sneetches and Other Stories, Hop on Pop--that changed the way children everywhere learned to read. Given unprecedented access to Dartmouth's extensive Geisel holdings, Pease captures this life in full as he offers fresh insights into the sources of Geisel's creativity, from his surreal images to his anti-authoritarian stance and slapstick humor. Readers are treated to many lesser-known illustrations, such as his censored creations during college, insecticide ads, and wartime political cartoons--all of which offer a glimpse of his early artistic style and the visual origins of the more famous creatures that later populated his children's books.
The New American Exceptionalism

The New American Exceptionalism

For a half century following the end of World War II, the seemingly permanent cold war provided the United States with an organizing logic that governed nearly every aspect of American society and culture, giving rise to an unwavering belief in the nation's exceptionalism in global affairs and world history. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, this cold war paradigm was replaced by a series of new ideological narratives that ultimately resulted in the establishment of another potentially endless war: the global war on terror. In The New American Exceptionalism, pioneering scholar Donald E. Pease traces the evolution of these state fantasies and shows how they have shaped U.S. national identity since the end of the cold war, uncovering the ideological and cultural work required to convince Americans to surrender their civil liberties in exchange for the illusion of security. His argument follows the chronology of the transitions between paradigms from the inauguration of the New World Order under George H. W. Bush to the homeland security state that George W. Bush's administration installed in the wake of 9/11. Providing clear and convincing arguments about how the concept of American exceptionalism was reformulated and redeployed in this era, Pease examines a wide range of cultural works and political spectacles, including the exorcism of the Vietnam syndrome through victory in the Persian Gulf War and the creation of Islamic extremism as an official state enemy. At the same time, Pease notes that state fantasies cannot altogether conceal the inconsistencies they mask, showing how such events as the revelations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and the exposure of government incompetence after Hurricane Katrina opened fissures in the myth of exceptionalism, allowing Barack Obama to challenge the homeland security paradigm with an alternative state fantasy that privileges fairness, inclusion, and justice.

Redeemer Nation in the Interregnum interrogates the polyvalent role that American exceptionalism continues to play after 9/11. Whereas American exceptionalism is often construed as a discredited Cold War–era belief structure, Spanos persuasively demonstrates how it operationalizes an apparatus of biopolitical capture that saturates the American body politic down to its capillaries. The exceptionalism that Redeemer Nation in the Interregnum renders starkly visible is not a corrigible ideological screen. It is a deeply structured ethos that functions simultaneously on ontological, moral, economic, racial, gendered, and political registers as the American Calling. Precisely by refusing to answer the American Calling, by rendering inoperative (in Agamben's sense) its covenantal summons, Spanos enables us to imagine an alternative America. At once timely and personal, Spanos's meditation acknowledges the priority of being. He emphasizes the dignity not simply of humanity but of all phenomena on the continuum of being, "the groundless ground of any political formation that would claim the name of democracy."

Seeking Peace Through Reconciliation Managing Anger, Conflicts, and Differences In Relationships A Personal Study
SEEKING PEACE THROUGH RECONCILIATION MANAGING ANGER, CONFLICTS, AND DIFFERENCES IN RELATIONSHIPS A PERSONAL STUDYThroughout our lives we will be in various relationships with parents, siblings, extended family, spouses, children, friends, neighbors, students, co-workers, team members, fellow Christians, and even acquaintances. We encounter people in stores, supermarkets, movie theaters, restaurants, banks, and social media sites. With all these interactions to navigate it is inevitable that disputes will arise. Conflicts escalate rapidly, tempers flare, and then words and actions can spiral out of control. How can we prevent these conflicts from occurring? When they do, how do we resolve them? How can we handle the obstinate who refuse to reconcile with us? How do we deal with our anger which might come raging up from within us? These answers are found in the Lord God's blueprint from His Word. This critical book discusses how we can seek and find peace through reconciliation no matter what the issues are. Every chapter opens with a typical scenario in which the principle may be applied. A scriptural principle and biblical explanation is provided to guide you. An ancient portrait is presented which demonstrates how Jesus, Peter, Paul, and others lived out all of these truths. A modern portrait of a counseling session follows which details how the author has applied these critical principles in different circumstances. Chapters conclude with a prayer you may use. A workbook companion can also be acquired. For group study, this book has been divided into a set of two smaller versions with accompanying workbooks. If you lead the group study, there is an instructor's manual with additional notes and the workbook questions with suggested answers from the text. For a quick read there is an abridged edition (A Book Short) which can also be purchased. This book discusses topics such as conflict, reconciliation, decision-making, putting away anger, covering over sins and mistakes in love, resolving differences in unity, utilizing a mediator, refusing to reconcile and the consequences to you and others, the spiritual battle involved, and how we should act like Christ. This can involve spouses in marriage, partners in dating, parents and children, friends, neighbors, co-workers, fellow students, acquaintances, and strangers. Seeking Peace Through Reconciliation Overcoming Resistance Within Ourselves And Others A Workbook Companion For Group Study Part 2
SEEKING PEACE THROUGH RECONCILIATION OVERCOMING RESISTANCE WITHIN OURSELVES AND OTHERS A WORKBOOK COMPANION FOR GROUP STUDY PART 2 This workbook of the same name is designed to aid in your comprehension and application of the truths from the Scriptures which are explained in the book. It has a question and answer format because asking questions was a powerful teaching method that Jesus used to reveal God's divine truth. In His instruction to the people of God and others, the Lord asked over one hundred and thirty questions. Those mentioned in the gospels were only the recorded ones. We can only speculate as to how many questions He might have actually asked. The Lord Jesus Christ used His questioning techniques for the purpose of prompting His listeners to focus, understand, analyze, evaluate, and apply the divine principles He was proclaiming to them. The author has attempted to do the same in this workbook. May you find God's great wisdom as you ponder the answers to these questions. This is the workbook which supports the second book in a series of two smaller books for group study based on a larger comprehensive version (A Personal Study). If you lead the group study, there is an instructor's manual with additional notes and the workbook questions with suggested answers from the text. Donald E. Pearse Sr., the author of "FATAL PLUNGES", is an octogenarian writing his first novel. He was inspired when he attended Creative Writing classes at a local Senior Center. One of his optional homework assignments was to create a fictional character. He created an Irish orphan boy, and as he continued to write about the boy's adventures, he morphed into that boy. Eventually the story grew into a full length novel. "FATAL PLUNGES" Is packed with mystery, adventure, and romance from start to finish. Pat, an Irish boy who grew up in a Manhattan orphanage, had frequent nightmares of tumbling into the ocean from a very high cliff in a fatal plunge. He ran away at the age of sixteen, joined the military, and fought in WWI. After the war, he went to Ireland to search for his ancestry. One day he stumbled upon the ruins of a castle previously owned by his father, who died in a fatal plunge decades earlier. He labored to solve the mystery of how his father died and how to end the horrible recurring nightmares. Pat discovered a gang of whiskey thieves and was engaged in a shoot-with them. He also had conflicts with a crooked town constable and his son. Pat and Shay had two sons and two daughters. One day Pat visited the orphanage where he was raised and discovered a son he never knew about. The castle was attacked by remnants of the local militia Pat dismantled years earlier. Fires erupted and lives were lost. Pat and Shay's three sons endured multiple misadventures while growing up, including a kidnapping and discovery of sacks of stolen money in cave filling with tidal waters at the bottom of a seaside cliff. The three sons all became fighter pilots and were downed over France during WWII. They faced almost insurmountable challenges as they endeavored to elude German soldiers. Pat and Shay's sons each endured numerous trials and tribulations in their romantic endeavors. It almost seemed a peaceful existence might never be attained by the family living in the restored castle. --------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoy reading this novel, be on the lookout for a soon to be published second novel by Mr. Pearse, entitled, "A GRAVESIDE PROMISE". This novel takes place deep in a South American jungle. Adventures, romances, and mysteries galore as the characters attempt to explore ancient archaeological sites.

"THE GRAVESIDE PROMISE" is packed with mystery, adventure and romance from start to finish. After her father died when their private plane crashed in a remote South American jungle, Tagalon, a teenaged girl left all alone in the jungle, is threatened by a cougar. Jingle, a jungle boy who was abandoned at an early age tries to help her. Tagalon made a graveside promise to her father that she would explore the three archaeological sites they planned to visit on this trip. She and Jingle travel through the jungle together toward S-1, the first site. They nearly die while exploring a huge pyramid. A love triangle is formed when Co-ana, a lovely Indian maiden flirts with Jingle. Jingle and Tagalon travel to a faraway University, where Tagalon hopes to pursue an archaeology degree. On the way, their boat sinks. They save a Professor from headhunters. Later, the professor and Tagalon go on archaeological expeditions together and a love triangle is formed. Jingle returns to the pyramid, where Co-ana is threatened by murderous treasure seekers. Gold is discovered in a near-by river, but it results in death. The pyramid becomes a tourist attraction staffed by Indians. One day robbers attack and many die during the ensuing fight. There is a well and connected tunnel at the S-2 site, where Jingle and Desiree, a fellow archaeologist fight to survive the elements, a giant Condor attack, and a band of angry Indians seeking to kill them. Desiree attempts to seduce Jingle. On their way to S-3, their helicopter fuel had been sabotaged, causing Jingle, Tagalon, and their two sons to crash land in the jungle. They manage to make it to S-3 on foot, where they are trapped in an abandoned village high on a mesa. They are in dire straits, and no-one knows their exact location. Desiree attempts to find a map to locate them for possible rescue. Jingle and Tagalon stage the three sites to preserve them. Because Jingle and Tagalon met in the jungle so many years ago, the Indians in the entire area now have a much higher standard of living, and the world is enriched by the historic treasures and ancient lifestyles they discovered and made accessible to tourists from around the world.

Robert E. Lee is well known as a Confederate general and as an educator later in life, but most people are exposed to the same handful of images of one of America’s most famous sons. It has been almost seven decades since anyone has attempted a serious study of Lee in photographs, and with Don Hopkins’s painstakingly researched and lavishly illustrated Robert E. Lee in War and Peace, now available in paperback, the wait is finally over. Dr. Hopkins, a Mississippi surgeon and lifelong student of the Civil War and Southern history with a recent interest in Robert E. Lee’s “from life” photographs, scoured manuscript repositories and private collections across the country to locate every known Lee image (61 in all) in existence today. The detailed text accompanying these images provides a sweeping history of Lee’s life and a compelling discussion of antique photography, with biographical sketches of all of Lee’s known photographers. The importance of information within the photographer’s imprint or backmark is emphasized throughout the book. Hopkins offers a substantial amount of previously unknown information about these images, how each came to be, and the mistakes in fact and attribution other authors and writers have made describing photographs of Lee to the reading public. Many of the images in this book are being published for the first time. In addition to a few rare photographs and formats that were uncovered during the research phase of Robert E. Lee in War and Peace, the author offers—for the first time—definitive and conclusive attribution of the identity of the photographer of the well-known Lee “in the field” images, and reproduces a startling imperial-size photograph of Lee made by Alexander Gardner of Washington, D.C. Students of American history in general and the Civil War in particular, as well as collectors and dealers who deal with Civil War era photography, will find Hopkins’s outstanding Robert E. Lee in War and Peace a true contribution to the growing literature on the Civil War.

WAS DONALD E. WESTLAKE A SCIENCE FICTION WRITER?Everyone knows him as the mystery writer who published books like The Hook (2000), Bad News 2001, and Put a Lid on It (2002) under his own name, Donald E. Westlake, and of course that he was also Richard Stark and a number of other favorite authors. But a science fiction writer? -- Really? -- You bet he was, early on in his career. (He even wrote one SF novel -- Anarchaos, in 1966, as "Curt Clark.")He also wrote quite a bit of short SF, like this weird little SF mystery that first graced the pages of Amazing in 1963.It's an engaging little tale, set in a asteroid-belt colony: our hero is an investigator for an interplanetary insurance company, ferreting out the truth behind suspicious (and sometimes, uhm, otherworldly) insurance claims. . . .
