This book presents new methods of circuit design for guitar electronics, based directly upon U.S. Non-Provisional Patent Applications. By systematic construction of unique series-parallel circuit topologies, the author shows how many series-parallel circuits are possible, including non-matched single-coil pickups, humbucking pickups, and humbucking combinations of matched single-coil pickups. This allows designers to avoid unnecessary and confusing duplicate circuits in pickup switching systems. It shows how electromechanical switches cannot produce the maximum number of tones for more than 2 or 3 pickups. Thus the author discloses an efficient micro-controller and cross-point switch architecture to replace mechanical switches, and allow access to the maximum number of tones. The discussion continues, developing humbucking circuits for odd numbers of matched single-coil pickups, extendable to any odd or even number, greater than 1, using a simplified switching system with very simple rules. It abandons some tones in favor of producing all-humbucking and unique tones, no matter what the switching choice. The author discloses both mechanical and digital switching versions. Then, based on using humbucking basis vectors, the author discloses variable-gain circuits that duplicate all possible switched humbucking tone circuits, and produces all the continuous tone gradations in between. The presentation includes analog and digitally controlled systems. The object of all the disclosures: give the guitarist or pianist a system which allows going from bright to warm tones and back, without ever needing to know which pickups are used in what combination.

This book chronicles Donald Burkholder's thirty-five year study of martingales and its consequences. Here are some of the highlights.Pioneering work by Burkholder and Donald Austin on the discrete time martingale square function led to Burkholder and Richard Gundy's proof of inequalities comparing the quadratic variations and maximal functions of continuous martingales, inequalities which are now indispensable tools for stochastic analysis. Part of their proof showed how novel distributional inequalities between the maximal function and quadratic variation lead to inequalities for certain integrals of functions of these operators. The argument used in their proof applies widely and is now called the Burkholder-Gundy good lambda method. This uncomplicated and yet extremely elegant technique, which does not involve randomness, has become important in many parts of mathematics.The continuous martingale inequalities were then used by Burkholder, Gundy, and Silverstein to prove the converse of an old and celebrated theorem of Hardy and Littlewood. This paper transformed the theory of Hardy spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc and extended and completed classical results of Marcinkiewicz concerning norms of conjugate functions and Hilbert transforms. While some connections between probability and analytic and harmonic functions had previously been known, this single paper persuaded many analysts to learn probability.These papers together with Burkholder's study of martingale transforms led to major advances in Banach spaces. A simple geometric condition given by Burkholder was shown by Burkholder, Terry McConnell, and Jean Bourgain to characterize those Banach spaces for which the analog of the Hilbert transform retains important properties of the classical Hilbert transform.Techniques involved in Burkholder's usually successful pursuit of best constants in martingale inequalities have become central to extensive recent research into two well- known open problems, one involving the two dimensional Hilbert transform and its connection to quasiconformal mappings and the other a conjecture in the calculus of variations concerning rank-one convex and quasiconvex functions.This book includes reprints of many of Burkholder's papers, together with two commentaries on his work and its continuing impact.

Loss and grief are universal human experiences that cause profound suffering. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of current research on bereavement and ways to promote healthy coping. The Group: Seven Widowed Fathers and Adaptation to Tragic Loss tackles this problem head-on. By chronicling the challenges and triumphs of a remarkable group of men who were left to raise young children after their wives died, this book offers a novel perspective and inspiration to anyone facing life's inevitable hardships. The Group is inspired by an innovative program at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. As directors of the Single Fathers Due to Cancer Program, the authors lead support groups for recently widowed fathers facing the simultaneous challenges of mourning their wives' deaths and raising their grieving children. The experiences of the seven men from the original support group - Karl, Neill, Bruce, Joe, Dan, Steven, and Russell - provide the raw material for this book. These men met monthly for four years and forged a tight bond. They encouraged each other through painful setbacks and celebrated increasingly frequent successes as sole parents. They also ¨gave back¨ to other fathers by helping to launch a research program on widowed parenthood and end-of-life supportive care for young parents. Their individual stories and shared experiences reveal important insights about coping with any kind of loss. As the support group matured, it became apparent that traditional approaches to bereavement were not helpful for these men. The bereavement field has made major advances over the past few decades; however, these insights about both normal and pathological grief have yet to penetrate the public's consciousness. This book integrates for the lay reader poignant narratives from the fathers in the support group with the latest advances in grief resolution, resilience, positive psychology, meaning-making, and post-traumatic growth. The Group is also rich with contemporary theory and data that one would expect from an academically-oriented book on grief and adaptation. This is a story being told for the first time that has relevance to anyone who has suffered a meaningful loss. The book will be particularly interesting to those who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one as well as professionals in the fields of grief counseling, mental health, hospice, palliative care, and oncology. Political leaders are often reticent about devolution, because they fear empowering political opponents or discontented groups that chafe under centralized rule. Yet, adopted early and generously in a conflict sequence, devolution has the potential to moderate it. In heterogeneous units (states in a federation, autonomous regions elsewhere), however, devolution often has an array of unanticipated dysfunctions, the most profound of which are conflicts among groups contending to control a unit and contested claims of priority based on indigenousness, some of them fostered by central governments or constitutional provisions. The book consists of three parts. The first depicts the arguments for, and benefits anticipated from, devolving power to subordinate units. The second part provides an evidence-based critique of the fears among political leaders and scholars about the risks inherent in devolving that power, especially the risk of secession. The third part of the book comprises an examination of the dysfunctions of devolution and provides a compelling analysis of judicial decisions and the role of courts in six Asian and African countries in dealing with them, especially with ethnic discrimination. Horowitz identifies a number of techniques in the toolkit of many judiciaries for addressing these problems, which remain unsolved.
