"'You don't mean you're going to divorce him?' Miss Spanner said with horror." A sophisticated, emotive novel, Chatterton Square concerns the complex web of relationships between two neighbouring families, the Blacketts and the Frasers. Framed by the advance of the Second World War, the subtle mechanics of marriage and love are laid bare through the observation of three of the marital options open to the mid-century woman: unmarried, separated, miserably married. Chatterton Square was published ten years after calls for a change in divorce law resulted in the Matrimonial Causes Act 1937. Despite there being more legal provision for women seeking divorce, the suggestion of it remained shocking, providing the central focus for Young's novel.

Emily Hilda Daniell (1880-1949) was an English children's writer, novelist, mountaineer, and advocate for female suffrage who wrote under the pen name E. H. Young. Despite being almost completely unheard of now, Daniell was a celebrated author who produced numerous best sellers during her time. First published in 1937, ''Celia'' revolves around the titular protagonist, a disillusioned housewife in her 40s who lives in a flat with her architect husband and two children. Instead of complaining about her dull life, she creates her own private world of thoughts that no one is allowed to enter. A poignant exploration of the oppressiveness of domesticity in Interwar Britain that will not disappoint those who have read and enjoyed other works by this author. Other works by this author include: "Corn of Wheat" (1910), "A Bridge Dividing" (1922), and "Moor Fires" (1916). Read & Co. Domestic Modernism, the Interwar Novel, and E.H. Young

Domestic Modernism, the Interwar Novel, and E. H. Young provides a valuable analytical model for reading a large body of modernist works by women, who have suffered not only from a lack of critical attention but from the assumption that experimental modernist techniques are the only expression of the modern. In the process of documenting the publication and reception history of E. H. Young's novels, the authors suggest a paradigm for analyzing the situation of women writers during the interwar years. Their discussion of Young in the context of both canonical and noncanonical writers challenges the generic label and literary status of the domestic novel, as well as facile assumptions about popular and middlebrow fiction, canon formation, aesthetic value, and modernity. The authors also make a significant contribution to discussions of the everyday and to the burgeoning field of 'homeculture,' as they show that the fictional embodiment and inscription of home by writers such as Young, Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Lettice Cooper, E. M. Delafield, Stella Gibbons, Storm Jameson, and E. Arnot Robertson epitomize the long-standing symbiosis between architecture and literature, or more specifically, between the house and the novel.
