A Shaker Story The play takes place during the Shaker "awakening" of the 1830s and 1840s when there was a rich outpouring of songs and dance in connection with a spiritual upwelling. Some scenes in the play are loosely borrowed from events described by Hervey Elkins in Fifteen Years in the Senior Order of Shakers: A Narration of Facts, Concerning that Singular People published by Dartmouth Press, Hanover NH 1853. Herman Melville in Moby-Dick refers to the Shakers (whose services he had observed) in Chapter 71 "The Jeroboam's Story".It is he who warns Ahab in effect that the White Whale is sacred and hunting it will bring his doom.
This legend relates the story of a poor Japanese Pearl Diver who unknowingly meets the son of a powerful Japanese Nobleman traveling incognito. He is on a quest to recover a special jewel sent by the Emperor of China to Japan to honor the father of the Emperor's grieving Wife after her father dies. Unfortunately, the Sea Dragon learns of this good deed, sinks the ships carrying it, takes the pearl back into the sea, and adds it to the other treasures in his garden under the sea. The Pearl Diver and Nobleman eventually fall in love, marry and have a child. After their son is born the Nobleman's Father appears to him in a dream, asking him why he does not pursue recovering the pearl from the Sea Dragon. When his Wife, the Pearl Diver, asks why her husband seems so moody, he reveals who he is, and what his quest is about. He is the brother of the Empress of China and head of a very important clan in Japan. She determines to help him and knows where the Sea Dragon's cave is in the sea. They develop a plan, she dives down to the cave and bargains with the Sea Dragon: If the Dragon will show her the magic pearl she will sing him a very sweet song in exchange. He finally agrees and she sings a lullaby she often uses to put her infant son to sleep. The Dragon falls asleep and she steals the pearl and tries to escape. But the sea creatures wake up the Sea Dragon, and they chase her. She is eventually able to give her husband the pearl but tragically dies. This tale is told in a Japanese Noh play and Kabuki dance theater.
This play is based on the folk story "Juan Darien" told by Horacio Quiroja, relating the moralistic value of "a life for a life" and the transformation it creates in the life of the avenger. An animal becomes a human and then reverts back to an animal by an act of revenge. The play can best be told in dramatically en masque with some choreography. It lends itself to musical enhancement of a Latin, jazz/blues, or ethereal Andean flute music. The text for this work is but the skeleton upon which

Koda always chases the ray of light beyond his broken reality, coming up as a teen from North Boulder. Tech companies sharply divided the city into two realities: the successful white-collars who transformed Boulder into the Silicon Valley of the Midwest, and the leftover inhabitants who are left to survive north of the Divided Road. When he needs an escape from the world, he and his friends turn to the Axys, the limitless virtual utopia where impossible is only a word. The frontier of the digital universe, created by the Three Kings, sits on the horizon of a groundbreaking immersion. Nanofluid rigs promise a leap in technology that blurs the line between the real and the digital. When Koda and his friends receive the first batch, their experience reaches far beyond anything they could ever imagine. However, the fun is short-lived when a rig explodes and forever transforms their lives. To get to the truth, they must uncover the secrets that lie under the surface of paradise, create unexpected alliances, and trust their instincts beyond the deceiving interests of others. Traveling between both worlds, Koda must outwit both brilliant and vicious aggressors to prevent the hidden agenda of an industry giant, one who dreams of evolving human society into his image of perfection.
