The Shenzi Fragments is the first complete translation in any Western language of the extant work of Shen Dao (350-275 B.C.E.). Though his writings have been recounted and interpreted in many texts, particularly in the work of Xunzi and Han Fei, very few Western scholars have encountered the political philosopher's original, influential formulations. This volume contains both a translation and an analysis of the Shenzi Fragments. It explains their distillation of the potent political theories circulating in China during the Warring States period, along with their seminal relationship to the Taoist and Legalist traditions and the philosophies of the Lushi Chunqiu and the Huainanzi. These fragments outline a rudimentary theory of political order modeled on the natural world that recognizes the role of human self-interest in maintaining stable rule. Casting the natural world as an independent, amoral system, Shen Dao situates the source of moral judgment firmly within the human sphere, prompting political philosophy to develop in realistic directions. Harris's sophisticated translation is paired with commentary that clarifies difficult passages and obscure references. For sections open to multiple interpretations, he offers resources for further research and encourages readers to follow their own path to meaning, much as Shen Dao intended. The Shenzi Fragments offers English-language readers a chance to grasp the full significance of Shen Dao's work among the pantheon of Chinese intellectuals.

Tredje biografi i serien Sagakongene Eirik Blodøks (885-954) var sønn av Harald Hårfagre. Som 12-åring la han ut på hærferd med fem langskip og var ute i åtte år. Eirik tok tidlig livet av flere av brødrene sine, men ble selv fordrevet av sin yngre bror Håkon den gode, da Håkon kom hjem fra England. Eirik endte som konge i York og Northumberland før han falt i et slag. Eirik Blodøks var en dyktig fagmilitær konge, men hadde lite forstand på statsstyring. Derfor kom han også klart i skyggen av farens store evner til å styre landet. Eirik kunne være personlig ubehagelig og oppfarende, forteller sagaene, og led av beslutningsvegring når han kom opp i dramatiske og uforutsigelige politiske situasjoner.

Nordøst-Grønland var på 1900-tallet fangstterreng for norske og danske fangstfolk, her stod en av Norges arktiske værstasjoner, og her ble Eirik Raudes Land til da Hallvard Devold heiste det norske flagget og erklærte området for norsk i 1931. Helge Ingstad ble oppnevnt som sysselmann og ivaretok norske interesser fram til Haag-domstolen i 1933 ga Danmark råderett over hele Grønland. 75 år etter anneksjonen reiste historiker Oddvar Svendsen rundt i Nordøst-Grønland sammen med okkupanten Devolds barnebarn, filmregissøren Leiv Igor Devold. Med på ekspedisjonen var også Geir Bye som skipper og Grzegorz Korczak som fotograf. Boka avdekker historiske begivenheter i et område som en gang stod i sentrum for norske, polare interesser, og den bringer ny kunnskap om Hallvard Devold, økonomen som ble polar eventyrer og nasjonal helt i 1930-årene, men som havnet i det ytterste mørke etter andre verdenskrig. Boka er en reise i tid og rom i Eirik Raudes Land slik det bestod av fangstfolk, eventyrere og okkupanter. Forfatter Oddvar Svendsen er dr. art. i historie fra UiT Norges arktiske universitet. Han er bosatt med sin familie i fjellandsbyen Grindel ved Basel i Sveits og arbeider som frilans historiker og bygdebokforfatter.

Eirik Hornborg (1879-1965) var skolman, författare, publicist och retoriker. Han var historikern som behandlade allt från sitt eget lands historia till världshistoria och sjöfart, krig, indianer, sjörövare, Roms forntid - och bidrog länge till att ge historiskt intresserade finlandssvenskar deras allmänbildning. Han var den oförskräckta journalisten och sanningssägaren som aldrig tvekade att höja rösten då det gällde omistliga värden. Och han var den äventyrslystne seglaren och resenären.Anna Lena Bengelsdorffs bok vittnar också om hur Eirik Hornborg hann leva ett harmoniskt familjeliv, och förbli en trofast vän till de människor som följde honom ända från ungdomsåren.Fil.mag. Anna Lena Bengelsdorff har verkat som lärare i historia, samhällslära och nationalekonomi vid flera skolor i Helsingfors. I eit blandingstidpunkt mellom år 900 og vår tid vaknar dronning Gunnhild, kona til Eirik Blodøks, opp i ei sjukeheimsseng. Ho føler på seg at hennar hovudfiende, skalden Egil Skallagrimsson, er på veg, og ho bestemmer seg for at dette er det siste høvet ho har til å få endra oppfatninga ettertida har hatt av henne som ei vond, maktgrisk og herskesjuk dronning. Tenaren hennar, Apollonia, Baudelaire sin advokat i rettssaka mot han i 1857, har derimot sleppt taket i alle hemntankar, men hjelper likevel til. Og som alltid dukkar Rottejomfrua opp, med sine evinnelege spørsmål om kva som eigentleg gneg inst i hugen, og vesle Eyolf kan ikkje gjere anna enn å henge sørgmodig etter.

Hvem var Eirik kongssønn? Han påsto selv at han var sønn av Sigurd Munn, og dermed hadde arverett til den norske kronen. I følge Sverres saga beviste han dette gjennom jernbyrd. Etter dette satte kong Sverre Eirik kongssønn til å styre Viken, som danskene hadde kontroll over. Det er ut fra sagaen heller ikke tvil om at Eirik kongssønn spilte en avgjørende rolle ved birkebeinernes seier i slaget ved Fimreite i 1184, som betydde mye for å etablere Norge som nasjonalstat. Reinton lar Eirik reise fra Bergen i 1150 sammen med Erling Ormsson, som på turen fikk tilnavnet "Skakke", Ragnvald Orknøyjarl, utnevnt til sitt embete av Sigurd Jorsalfare og Eindride Unge, keiser Manuel Komnenos' sendemann til Norge. Og på reisen lar han dem bli invitert til fest hos den høyvelbårne grevinne Ermengard av Narbonne i Provence. Vi møter Konstantinopel på 1100-tallet og Gudenes Slette i Oslo, der Eirik kongssønn melder seg til tjeneste for Sverre Sigurdsson etter nærmere tretti år i væringgarden i Bysants.

If an old treaty regulating 'commerce' or forbidding 'degrading treatment of persons' is to be interpreted decades after its conclusion, does 'commerce' or 'degrading treatment of persons' have the same meaning at the time of interpretation as they had when the treaty was concluded? The evolutionary interpretation of treaties has proven one of the most controversial topics in the practice of international law. Indeed, it has been seen as going against the very grain of the law of treaties, and has been argued to be contrary to the intention of the parties, breaching the principle of consent. This book asks what the place of evolutionary interpretation is within the understanding of treaties, at a time when many important international legal instruments are over five decades old. It sets out to place the evolutionary interpretation of treaties on a firm footing within the Vienna rules of interpretation, as codified in Articles 3133 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The book demonstrates that the evolutionary interpretation of treatiesin common with all other types of interpretationis in fact based upon an objective understanding of the intention of the parties. In order to marry intention and evolution, the book argues that, on the one hand, evolutionary interpretation is the product of the correct application of Articles 3133 and, on the other, that Articles 3133 are geared towards the objective establishment of the intention of the parties. The evolutionary interpretation of treaties is therefore shown to represent an intended evolution.

Domestic courts are entrusted with the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), as faithful trustees of the rights protected in the Convention. This book analyses the way in which the domestic courts in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany apply the ECHR and how, applying the Convention, they define their relationship with the European Court of Human Rights. Contrary to what others have contended, the book argues that it is not true descriptively, nor desirable normatively, that the domestic courts approach the ECHR based upon friction and assertion of sovereignty vis-à-vis the European Court. The proper role played by the domestic courts, and the one which they have taken on them to perform in fact, is to apply the Convention in all good faith, building on the principles of the Convention as set out in the jurisprudence of the European Court. But if domestic courts are in a position to apply the ECHR in the first place, it is because the application of the Convention has been entrusted to them by the other organs of the municipal state; in certain cases municipal principles of the separation of powers have an important bearing on domestic interpretation and application of the Convention. Domestic Application of the ECHR: Courts as Faithful Trustees shows that, through their faithful application of the ECHR, domestic courts can - and do - make a positive contribution to the development of the law of the Convention.

Analytic philosophy has come to dominate organizational theory and management education, despite criticism from several notable scholars. The European continental philosophical tradition, on the other hand, is seen by some as a counterpoint to US- and UK-dominated functionalistic organizational theories. These two very different schools of thought are now largely practiced in isolation from one another. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century philosopher Ernst Cassirer served as a mediating force and facilitated a fruitful dialogue between the two schools until he was forced to leave Germany when the Nazi party came to power. In Pluralism in Management, author Eirik J. Irgens utilizes Ernst Cassirer’s pluralistic philosophy in order to investigate how different but connected forms of knowing, including art, myth, religion, science, and history may help us become better organizational scholars and management educators.
