Criminal Behavior explores crime as a developmental process from birth through early adulthood. It further examines the role that legal, political, and criminal justice systems play in the development of criminal behavior. Criminal Behavior:takes into account biological, genetic, developmental, familial, social, educational, cultural, political, and economic factors correlated with crime;references actual cases and events to serve as examples of the principles introduced;critically examines the roles of the criminal and juvenile justice systems and methods of punishment in the development of and response to criminal behavior;explores the effects of crime on victims and looks at correlations between crimes and victim characteristics and behaviors;examines the role of childhood and adolescent behavioral and mental health disorders in the development of criminal behavior; andinvestigates the differences between criminals and the rest of society, and the differences and similarities between and among criminals.Chock-full of personal anecdotes, this engaging text is unique in that it combines the experience of Doug Bernstein, a clinical psychologist and a successful textbook author, and Elaine Cassel, a practicing attorney who regularly teaches psychology and law. Organized around five dimensions related to the causes, characteristics, and consequences of crime, the book summarizes the programs that research suggest offer the best hope for doing a better job of dealing with crime in the 21st century. The authors argue that prevention is the key to dealing with crime, and present comprehensive suggestions for crime prevention. The new edition features the latest criminal statistics available, as well as the most current research on the causes and correlations of crime and violence. Other highlights include: discussion of the latest brain-imaging research in psychopathy - how psychopaths' brains are different from "normal" brains; the latest on gang activities and how their venues have migrated to suburban and rural areas; terrorism and its roots; Internet crimes, especially sexual predator crimes; the latest research on how media violence, especially violent interactive video games, contributes to criminal behavior; the examination of drug and mental health courts as alternatives to punishment; and recent Supreme Court rulings eliminating the death penalty for juveniles and the mentally retarded.Intended as a textbook for upper-level courses on criminal behavior, psychology and law, and developmental psychopathology taught in departments of psychology, criminology, criminal justice, law, and sociology and/or criminal justice training academies.

Can the Army effectively implement clinical treatment guidelines in its military treatment facilities to achieve consistent and high-quality practices throughout its health system? This is a 450-character abstract. In partnership with the Army Medical Department, RAND worked to implement clinical practice guidelines. This report evaluates the asthma guideline demonstration. It documents the actions, assesses effects, and measures the quality and limitations of data for monitoring outcomes. The authors found that the implementation scored successes but resource limitations and organizational barriers curbed progress. They conclude that flexibility, monitoring, and training are the keys to implementing the guidelines. They also found that patient education needed improvement.

The Booker-shortlisted author of Umbrella writes his most American novel yet--a brilliant portrait of a 1950s housewife, based on the life of the author's mother, and an exploration of sexual freedom and sublimated desire, set between the dining halls of Cornell University and the raucous parties of midcentury New York CityWill Self is one of the most inimitable contemporary writers in the English language, dubbed "the most daring and delightful novelist of his generation" by The Guardian. In this brilliantly conceived new novel Self turns his forensic eye and technicolor imagination to the troubled life of his mother, Elaine. Standing by the mailbox outside 1100 Hemlock Street in Ithaca, New York, Elaine thinks of her husband and child inside her house and wonders: is this . . . it? As she begins to push back against the strictures of her life in 1950s America, she undertakes a disastrous affair that put her first marriage to an Ivy League academic and former Communist Party member in peril. Based on the intimate diaries Self's mother kept for over forty years, Elaine is a writer's attempt to reach the almost unimaginable realm: a parent's interior life prior to his own existence. Perhaps the first work of auto-oedipal fiction, Elaine shows Will Self working in an exciting new dimension, utilizing his stylistic talents to tremendous effect.

At 23 Elaine has achieved much more than a woman of her age in 1939 might have expected - or predicted. She is single minded, ambitious and highly intelligent and can handle the heavy responsibility that has fallen on her as war threatens. It seems that anything is possible. She is wooed by a neighbour, one of 'nature's gentleman', modest, unselfish, but limited. Frank desperately wants to marry her. Then she meets Robert Leonard, owner of the largest department store in Brighton, the most eligible man in the town and falls deeply in love with a man who seems to correspond to all her instincts and ambitions. The story takes Elaine and her family through the war and into the fifties and as she watches her bright daughter grow up she is determined that she shall not fall into the trap that ensnared Elaine. This is Part One of The Brighton Trilogy.
