Caroline Lucretia Herschel: Story of a Woman Astronomer

Caroline Lucretia Herschel was the first woman who received full recognition as astronomer by discovering several comets. She was also the first woman to be awarded a Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and to be named an Honorary Member of the Royal Astronomical Society. "Most people in this country have heard of Miss Caroline Herschel the astronomer. Without knowing much about her, she has been vaguely regarded by the public as a profound scientific genius, the strong-minded peer and coadjutor of her brother, the illustrious Sir William Herschel. It is supposed that she rose above the narrow sphere of woman's usual domestic life, and spent her time in studying the universe and making astronomical discoveries. She has been often cited, in the recent discussions of the woman question, as an illustration of the intellectual equality of the sexes and as demonstrating to the world what woman is capable of doing in science when she gets a fair opportunity... The lesson of this book is very important to ambitious girls who despise domestic concerns, and long for an "intellectual" career. Her science, as such, gave Miss Herschel no great enjoyment; her happiness came from her womanly devotion to her brother's ambitious work; and the book will be found painfully interesting as it discloses the suffering she also experienced as the penalty of this unselfish devotion."

Earth is destroyed. Aliens are real. Hope exists. Eliza Ross leads a quiet life. Until the alien ships drop out of nowhere and render all Eliza considered normal to dust. Since then, she has escaped the frenzied spree of human-snatching and survived the destruction of her planet. Now, her goal is to join the rest of her people in their new home among the stars, which is why she embarks on a ship belonging to the Union of the Dozen Races-her saviors. But after reaching the Colony, Eliza learns her journey is far from over. Because Earth's invasion by the cursed Syks has triggered a new conflict among the ancient alien races. And the mighty Union of the Dozen Races, already busy fighting the biggest threat on several fronts, may not be enough to hold back the Syks from recapturing the humans in the Colony. Thankfully, the newest addition to the Union is there to help. But the Karssians themselves are slowly dying out, and in exchange for their assistance, they make a peculiar proposal: one human woman for the Colony's continued protection. To Eliza, this sounds like a simple decision-sacrificing one for the good of the rest-and so she readily volunteers herself. Still, once on the lush planet of Karssia, she wonders if her choice wasn't made in haste. For her intended match, High Councilor Pradan E'Melkor, doesn't seem to want her. And if she can't find a way to make things work between them, what will happen to the humans in the Colony?
