This text re-evaluates the literary symbol of ""Moby-Dick"" and provides a different way of reading one of the famous texts of American literature. Ranging from the realists to the abstract expressionists, from the famous to the obscure, Schultz reveals how these artists have tried to capture the essence of the meaning of ""Moby-Dick"" meanings and to use it as a springboard for their own imaginations. One of the most frequently and diversely illustrated of American novels, ""Moby-Dick"" has attracted book illustrators in Rockwell Kent, Boardman Robinson, Garrick Palmer, Barry Moser, Bill Sienkiewicz, among others. It has also inspired creations by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, Sam Francis, Benton Spruance, Leonard Baskin, Theodoros Stamos, Richard Ellis, Ralph Goings, Seymour Lipton, Walter Martin, Tony Rosenthal, Richard Serra and Theodore Roszak. The artists reflect in equal measure the novel's realistic (plot, character, natural history) and philosophical modes, its visual and visionary dimensions. Others view the novel as a touchstone for feminist, multicultural, and environmental themes, or mock its status as a cultural icon. The author demonstrates how these and many other diverse talents enlarge the reader's appreciation of ""Moby-Dick"" and how literature and art can amplify each other's meanings and achievements. Yet ultimately, she, like Melville, concludes that the great white whale remains unpainted and unread in any absolute or final sense.
This book touches the reader on many levels: as a memoir, a biography, a history and as a study of nature. As the narrative moves forward through a series of beautifully written meditative essays, it explores the intimate details of nature, relationships, structures, and events, which have shaped the author's memory of her family's summer lake home and community. Shultz visits her history and her present, exploring the northern environment of Michigan's lower peninsula, the development of an unusual summer community within that environment, and the growth of an individual within both the natural and human environment. This is not only a history of community but also a cultural study of all such communities. Schultz acknowledges her debt to Thoreau by recognising the significance of individual perception in understanding nature. However, she also extends Walden by considering complex and changing relationships between nature and human community.

In 1940, Australian born, J.F.W. Schulz, a respected member of the community in Tanunda, South Australia was arrested and put into detention. He was accused of being a Nazi and of keeping Nazi propaganda in his home. Although he maintained his innocence and made a number of appeals against his detention, he remained in detention, far from his family, for another three years and for a further year he was under government direction regarding his occupation and his place of residence. In this meticulously researched history, his grand-daughter, Liz Schulz explores the reasons given for and the circumstances of his arrest. She had access to the security files of the Australian government: files which her grandfather was never able to examine. She was also able to draw upon her grandfather's own diary and correspondence held in private hands. In mapping his own quest for justice she seeks to get justice for her late grandfather. While this thesis concerns one individual's struggle it also relates to wider issues about the rights of British subjects of German origin in war-time Australia. Furthermore it illuminates contemporary discussions about civil rights and the power of the state.
J.F.W Schulz was an Australian of German heritage who was born north of the Barossa Valley in Robertstown. He was the owner of Auricht's Printing Office, he had a keen interest in film, and was an aspiring politician. He was also a prisoner...On 13 December 1940, Schulz was arrested and transported to the Wayville Army Barracks. No accusations were made at that time, but Schulz knew what the arrest meant; someone, somewhere, considered him a threat.Despite an absence of evidence of his disloyalty to Australia, his country of birth, and without a fair trial, Schulz was detained for more than three years. Prisoner Diaries is a record of Schulz's internment during World War II and his relentless search for answers.

"Dear Elizabeth" began as a letter to my teenage daughter, to help her define and pursue love, happiness, and marriage not as our culture does, but as God's Word, the Bible, instructs us to. From my perspective as a man, husband and father, I wanted to help her understand how her husband's needs, thinking and way of expressing and receiving love may be different from her own. With wisdom gained through personal experience, marriage experts, authors and "regular" couples, I wanted to provide her with principles and insights to overcome common marital challenges. Specific issues addressed cover: what to do when the "in-love" feelings subside, happiness and marital expectations, how do you say "I love you", questions to ask before marriage, God's design and purposes for marriage.
