Elizabeth was a devoted mother and loved helping others, especially the poor and sick. But life wasn't always easy for her. William became very sick, and the family traveled to Italy to try to help him get better. Sadly, he passed away there, leaving Elizabeth a widow with five young children. Elizabeth also founded the Sisters of Charity, a group of religious women dedicated to helping others, especially in education and caring for the sick.
