FOR SOME forty years, an article from the pen of Ellen White appeared in nearly every issue of the weekly magazine The Signs of the Times. The magazine was started in 1874 by her husband James in the city of Oakland, California. It began with a similar purpose for the West Coast that The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald magazine, published in Battle Creek, Michigan, had for Eastern North America. Over a period of time however, it became written more and more for the general public while the Review and Herald remained the general paper for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.Over the forty years that Ellen White contributed to the magazine, some 2,000 of her articles appeared in its pages. During that time, several hundred of her articles in the Signs of the Times appeared later, or had appeared previously, in the Review and Herald. These duplicated articles, as well as some duplicated in the volumes of Testimonies for the Church and Conflict of the Ages Series, are not included in this present three-volume collectionThe messages in this present collection need no human praise or promotion for their inspired and inspiring thoughts speak for themselves of their divine origin. Animated Advertising – 200 Years of Premiums, Promos, and Pop–ups, from the Collection of Ellen G. K. Rubin
A lively look at an underexplored niche in the history of American ads: pop-ups. Drawing from Ellen G. K. Rubin’s extensive collection of more than 7,000 pop-up books and related ephemera, Animated Advertising demonstrates how animated and dimensional paper devices have been used throughout US history to promote products, art, entertainment, and ideas. The book displays the creativity of advertisers in food, fashion, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, travel, music, politics, and more. Rubin’s diverse examples of historical paper pop-ups show how they leaped from the pack of standard marketing materials to catch the eye and inform patrons and clientele about the items being sold. Illustrated with two hundred and fifty color images, and published to coincide with a Winter 2023 exhibition at the Grolier Club’s New York headquarters, Animated Advertising is a lively look at an underexplored niche in the history of American marketing, graphic design, and paper engineering.

This explosive work contains a great deal of highly documented material on the life and movement of Ellen G. White that Adventists in general, to say nothing of the public, will not know. The book is not a classic psychobiography, although history and psychology are the primary disciplines employed. It also contains a sprinkling of theology and personal reflection to make it a unique blend. The most striking evidence presented raises major questions about the prophet's mental and moral health. It is a must read for anyone who truly wants to understand Seventh-Day Adventism and its prophetic founder.A devastating work. What Numbers and Rea started, your book will finish -John Dart (1936-2019), longtime religion editor, Los Angeles TimesI enjoyed the writing and the stories. The anecdotes you included enriched the content. Your writing was personal, and I think readers will feel that you are writing to them, and makes the book of increased value. There is the same question with Joseph Smith. Why do people stay in the face of such documentation? What are the forces that keep them tied to source documentation of fraud?-Dr. Robert Anderson, psychiatrist, author, Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith: Psychobiography and the Book of MormonI found the material fascinating, a powerful polemic -Ronald Numbers, William Coleman professor of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author, Prophetess of Health
