At the end of the nineteenth century Emilia Pardo Bazán was Spain's leading woman novelist and short story writer, and also a critic, journalist and fierce campaigner for women's rights. This book examines Pardo Bazán's growth into maturity as a novelist during the late 1880s and the 1890s. Hemingway argues against the convenient critical division of the author's works into an early 'Naturalist' and later 'spiritual' phase. Concentrating on four novels published during this time the author demonstrates that Pardo Bazán's writing shows an increasing interest in psychology; the ambiguity and irony evident in her treatment of characters' motivation show her a subtle critic of the claims of science to explain human behaviour, illustrated in the work of Zola and his followers. Dr Hemingway stresses Pardo Bazán's originality as a writer, deserving comparison with her compatriot Galdos and with contemporary French and Ruissian novelists. This wider perspective will make the book of interest to students of the European novel generally as well as those is Spanish studies.

Spanish writer, intellectual, and feminist Emilia Pardo Baz n (1851-1921) was a master of the short form and practitioner of the style that became known as naturalism. This collection of twenty-seven translated stories, marked by their brevity, reveal the narrative complexity, keen psychological insight, and careful attention to realistic detail that was characteristic of her work. Some fictionalize actual occurrences ("The Pardon," "A Galician Mother," and "The Lady Bandit"); others are a defense of subjugated women ("The Guilty Woman" and "The Faithful Fianc e"). One highly symbolic story, "The White Horse," qualifies Pardo Baz n as the godmother of the Generation of '98, the group of writers who exhorted Spain to rid itself of inertia, apathy, and fixation on past glories. Still others resemble contemporary suspense thrillers ("The Cuff Link" and "The White Hair"). Influenced by the work of Guy de Maupassant and mile Zola, Pardo Baz n's themes are fear, love, hatred, forgiveness, cruelty, poverty, repentance, homesickness, and madness--that is, naked reality.

Este estudio supone un trabajo de gran interes para conocer la influencia de E. T. A. Hoffmann en Emilia Pardo Bazan. Esta influencia, evidente por hallarse la obra del autor aleman en el inventario de la biblioteca personal de Pardo Bazan, determina la aparicion de una serie de motivos literarios en la creacion de algunos cuentos fantasticos de esta autora. Para ello, Alicia Romero Lopez realiza un minucioso estudio de lo fantastico (desde una vision general hasta el imaginario hoffmanniano), planteando una investigacion que desemboca en establecer los motivos y su desarrollo textual en ocho cuentos de Emilia Pardo Bazan, a saber: Un destripador de antano (1890), El ruido (1892), El talisman (1894), La mascara (1897), Vampiro (1901), Las espinas (1919), La Borgonona (1885) y Los pendientes (1909). A traves de estudio se nos muestra la extension europea de este tipo de motivos, con los relatos de Hoffmann como base hipotextual, marcando, de este modo, un nuevo ambito de influencia (en las narraciones de Emilia Pardo Bazan y, por extension, en la literatura espanola).
