A dark country road leads newly-graduated Ashlyn Davis to the site of a terrible accident and the side of a dying man. Braving a storm and her total lack of internet or emergency training, she stays with him until help arrives. Under the blood and broken bones, her rescue is hot as hell-and twice as forbidden. As the Vice President of the Storm Crows MC, Joker is danger personified, but Ash forges a friendship with him and finds the steadiness she desperately needs in the unlikeliest of places. But the danger that nearly killed Joker is far from over, and Ash brings her own brand of trouble. Can their friendship ever become something more? Or will danger-or death-keep them apart?
The Landscape Studies of Hayman Rooke (1723-1806)
The work of an unjustly neglected antiquarian brought to life, showing his contribution to the field. After his military career, Major Hayman Rooke undertook detailed studies of landscape, ancient trees, natural history, meteorology, and ancient and Roman Britain. He was linked into a broad network of friends and correspondents, including landowners such as Earl Bathurst and the Duke of Portland, and their agents (among them Humphry Repton); he was also connected to numerous learned societies. Information from these sources, coupled with his wide-ranging reading and first-hand observations, gave him a unique perspective on the landscape. This book examines Rooke's work, showing how landscapes were interpreted and understood in the eighteenth century; more broadly, it offers new insights into the antiquarian movement of the time. It is richly illustrated, making use of many of Rooke's own sketches and drawings. EMILY SLOAN gained her doctoral thesis from the University of Nottingham.

According to the United States Public Health Service, over 100,000 deaths a year are attributable to alcohol, including 20,000 highway fatalities. In response, legislatures have enacted various forms of regulation intended both to reduce alcohol consumption and to curb its harmful effects. This groundbreaking study focuses on one such form of regulation, the liability imposed on alcohol servers and social hosts by tort law. Basing their analysis on important new data from their extensive research and in-depth interviews with actors on all sides of the issue, the authors conclude that, despite their relative unpopularity, tort laws are very effective in reducing accidents—even more than criminal sanctions. Extraordinary in scope and exacting in detail, Drinkers, Drivers, and Bartenders: Balancing Private Choices and Public Accountability links alcohol problems, deterrence, and serving practices in a way no other work has been able to do and is certain to become a crucial reference point for researchers and policymakers alike.

These poems are a meditation on the myriad divisions and inequities we face, both personally and as a society. In Disconnects and Other Broken Threads, award-winning poet Emily-Sue Sloane pulls on many of the fraying threads that divide us and gently weaves them with striking imagery to inspire connections through hope and, at times, humor.------------------"Like a gardener cultivating a bonsai tree, Emily-Sue Sloane takes big, wild concepts like mortality, impotent rage, grief and regret and presents them to us as stark small snapshots of everyday life." -Rorie Kelly, singer/songwriter, Shadow Work "Sloane sees, feels, and speaks with an honesty that will not accept the glib comfort of pretense.... She] suggests again and again, with rage, regret, humor, irony and anger: This is what it takes to be alive." -Scudder Parker, poet and author of Safe as Lightning "Indignant of social injustices, she deconstructs the makeup of contemporary life, giving a thundering voice to the voiceless." -Tonia Leon, bilingual poet and translator, author of My Beloved Chaos

Emily possessed an inexhaustible treasure of facial expression and her expressions were genuine. She had lively, thin, dark, eyebrows, arched above eyes that could shift from a placid softness to a razor sharp glare with an astonishing suddenness. Her mouth and lips formed into a vast array of configurations that were expressive of even the most subtle mood change. Tim felt as if he were peering directly at a soul unmasked, a soul that had grown to maturity without being tarnished by the sarcasm, the skepticism, the cynicism, and all the other ism's and asm's that plague civilization. A soul that had clung tenaciously to the childlike wonder, optimism, hope, that is so often lost. Indeed, it was the loss of these that Tim lamented and their re-turn that he longed for, though, this was as yet, unclear to him.
