Media Law

Media Law

Eric (EDT) Barendt

New York University Press
1993
sidottu
This crucial volume focusing on free speech, media, and law confronts complicated issues that are of interest not only to media law scholars, but to anyone concerned with the First Amendment. It questions whether freedom of speech is identical to freedom of the press and explores why the law restrains free speech for broadcast media but not for traditional print media. In dealing with the often opposing ideals of the rights of the media versus the rights of the individual, this volume tackles difficult legal and social questions of the day.

This book presents contributions of participants of a workshop held at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques (CRM), University of Montreal. It can be viewed as a sequel to "Mirror Symmetry I" (1998), "Mirror Symmetry II" (1996), and "Mirror Symmetry III" (1999), copublished by the AMS and International Press. The volume presents a broad survey of many of the noteworthy developments that have taken place in string theory, geometry, and duality since the mid 1990s.Some of the topics emphasized include the following: integrable models and supersymmetric gauge theories; theory of M- and D-branes and noncommutative geometry; duality between strings and gauge theories; and, elliptic genera and automorphic forms. Several introductory articles present an overview of the geometric and physical aspects of mirror symmetry and of corresponding developments in symplectic geometry. The book provides an efficient way for a very broad audience of mathematicians and physicists to explore the frontiers of research into this rapidly expanding area.

From Czarism and Bolshevism to the current post-communist era, the media in Central Asia has been tightly constrained. Though the governments in the region assert that a free press is permitted to operate, research has shown this to be untrue. In all five former Soviet republics of Central Asia, the media has been controlled, suppressed, punished, and often outlawed. This enlightening collection of essays investigates the reasons why these countries have failed to develop independent and sustainable press systems. It documents the complex relationship between the press and governance, nation-building, national identity, and public policy. In this book, scholars explore the numerous and broad-reaching implications of media control in a variety of contexts, touching on topics such as Internet regulation and censorship, press rights abuses, professional journalism standards and self-censorship,
Christians and Missionaries in India

Christians and Missionaries in India

This interesting volume challenges the long-held assumption that Christianity in India is nothing but a colonial or Western imposition. Leading experts here chronicle the histories and cultures of India's many Christian communities and show that local Indian leaders were the real agents of religious change in the subcontinent. These chapters range widely over various facets of Indian society and its religious developments. Of crucial importance is the fact that in exploring their subjects the contributors take pains to avoid the Eurocentric nature of most studies of India and represent Christianity from a genuinely Indocentric perspective. The result is an entirely new vista from which to view the history, features, and influence of Indian Christianity. Contributors: Peter B. This volume brings together 13 major poets of the American small press scene, each representing an important branch of the avant-garde as it has developed over the past forty years. Each of the poets is presented in a large selection, in most cases chosen by the poets themselves. They range in age from 41 to 81, their poetics range from visual/conceptual poetry to surrealism, from personal/observation poetry to cut-up and collage poetry. Powerful, touching, innovative and humorous, these poems illuminate the underground poetry scene to give the reader a view of the real new American poetry.
