A History of Money and Banking in Barbados documents the development of money and commercial banking in Barbados from the date of the settlement in 1627 to the establishment of the Central Bank of Barbados in 1973. It examines the early years of barter; the introduction of British coins by the Royal Proclamations of 1825 and 1838; the issue of colonial coins (anchor money); the introduction and circulation of foreign coins; the debate over the legal tender of British silver coins and the share of the seigniorage of these coins.Armstrong examines the first banks, the Colonial Bank and the West India Bank, in the nineteenth century, the introduction of Canadian banks in the twentieth century, the expansion of Barclays Bank as well as the issue of Barbados government currency notes; the measures taken by the British government and the Caribbean governments during the Second World War to ensure an adequate supply of currency; and the agreement between Barbados, Trinidad and British Guiana (Guyana) to make their government currency legal tender in each country.Armstrong analyses the establishment and operation of the British Caribbean Currency Board and its acrimonious demise, the establishment of the East Caribbean Currency Authority, the withdrawal of Barbados from the Authority, and the establishment of the Central Bank of Barbados.
- A near-death experience after falling into the frigid North Atlantic becomes high comedy. - The salvage of an abandoned yacht on the Grand Banks hints at mystery and intrigue. - A voyage to re-supply the Titanic expedition 400 miles southeast of Newfoundland leads to a harrowing experience with the fury of Hurricane Andrew. - All part of the life and times of an accomplished skipper. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the life of Captain Keith Bath. This book offers an important and interesting glimpse into the rhythms of a rural Canadian life lived by and on and with the sea.The book is for anyone who wants to better understand this vast country and the complexity of its people. This user-friendly volume provides evidence-based tools for meeting the needs of the approximately 15% of K to 6 students who would benefit from more support than is universally offered to all students but do not require intensive, individualized intervention. With a unique focus on small-group interventions for both academic and behavioral difficulties, the book addresses externalizing behavior, internalizing behavior, reading, and mathematics. Step-by-step guidelines are presented for screening, selecting interventions, and progress monitoring. Ways to involve families and ensure that practices are culturally responsive are described. In a convenient large-size format, the book includes more than 20 reproducible handouts and forms. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.
"Pratchett's humor is international, satirical, devious, knowing, irreverent, unsparing, and above all, funny." --Kirkus ReviewsDetermined to create a wish granting demon, an inept young demonologist instead conjures the Discworld's most incompetent wizard in this devilishly humorous adventure in Sir Terry Pratchett's internationally bestselling fantasy series.Discworld's only demonology hacker, Eric, is about to make life very difficult for the rest of Ankh-Morpork's denizens. This would-be Faust is very bad . . . at his work, that is. All he wants is to fulfill three little wishes: to live forever, to be master of the universe, and to have the woman of his dreams fall for him.But Eric's desires are much greater than his talents. Instead of a powerful demon, he summons the infamous Rincewind, a wizard whose incompetence is rivaled only by Eric's. As if that wasn't bad enough, that lovable sharp-toothed travel accessory the Luggage has arrived, too. With friends like these, there's only one thing Eric wishes for now--that he'd never been born. The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Eric is the fourth book in Wizards series. Loving Eric is a mother's story of adoption and the subsequent heartbreaking challenges that the whole family encounters as they come to understand the impact Eric's severe Attachment Disorder, Autism and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has on everyone's daily lives. The book charts Laura's journey as she searches for answers to better support her family in the ensuing meltdown. Whilst Laura journaled her experiences as they were happening, she did not feel she could publish anything until she had discovered genuine solutions for Eric, herself and her family - and hopefully now, for her readers. This book will appeal to anybody who is interested in a very human story of the triumph of hope over adversity, and also to parents, carers, and professionals alike, who want some answers and new therapeutic approaches that really work.

How did famous New Orleans jazz trumpet player Louis Armstrong get his first horn? Seven-year-old Louis Armstrong was too poor to buy a real instrument. He didn't even go to school. To help his mother pay the rent, every day he rode a junk wagon through the streets of New Orleans, playing a tin horn and collecting stuff people didn't want. Then one day, the junk wagon passed a pawn shop with a gleaming brass trumpet in the window. . . . With messages about hard work, persistence, hope, tolerance, cooperation, trust, and friendship, A Horn for Louis is perfect for aspiring young musicians and nonfiction fans alike History Stepping Stones now feature updated content that emphasizes Common Core and today's renewed interest in nonfiction. Perfect for home, school, and library bookshelves
