Being an emperor in ancient Rome was a dangerous business. Most of the nearly 100 emperors from the dawn of the Roman empire to its fall died violently—often the victims of assassination, battle wounds or gruesome maladies. A sly work of cartoon history, with a touch of dark wit, Et Tu, Brute? is an irreverent, illustrated compendium of the deaths of all the Roman emperors. Here Nero stabs himself in the throat, Tiberius is smothered in his sleep, Caligula is stabbed by his own praetorian guard and Claudius is fed poisonous mushrooms by his wife.
Et Cetera Discordia
In 1958 or 1959 (we're not sure which), Eris, the Goddess of Confusion, sent an Emperor Penguin to a bowling alley in California. It appeared before Malaclypse the Younger and Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst and inspired them to create the Discordian Society: a tribe of philosophers, theologians, magicians, scientists, artists, clowns, and similar maniacs. The Et Cetera Discordia proudly celebrates 50th the anniversary of this prophetic vision. It is a collage of the funny, weird, and often profound writings and art created by numerous modern (and post-modern) Discordians. This book is an invitation to join them in exploring, celebrating, and remixing this strange and exciting century.

About two thousand years ago, a great man who was renowned for forgiveness and magnanimity was betrayed and slain by his compatriots who feared he would become their King. To the chagrin of his murderers, he was soon hailed as a God and the momentous events that ensued paved the way for the birth of Christianity. The venue for this drama, however, was not Jerusalem as might be supposed, but rather the eternal city of Rome. It is a description of the founder of the Roman Empire. In a work stranger than fiction, Gary Courtney propounds that the Jesus of Nazareth that graces the pages of the New Testament is an entirely mythological personage, and presents a step by step explanation of how the beloved Saviour of the Christian religion entered the world from the wings of a stage.

Et Tu, Brute?: A Short History of Political Murder

Et Tu, Brute?: A Short History of Political Murder

Greg Woolf

Why did Caesar have to die--and why did his death solve nothing? The plot was confused, the execution bungled, and within hours different versions of the event were circulating. It was the end of republican Rome and the beginning of the Roman Empire--and yet everything about it remains somewhat mysterious. Beginning with this legendary political assassination, immortalized in art and literature through the ages, Greg Woolf delivers a remarkable meditation on Caesar's murder as it echoes down the corridors of history, affecting notions and acts of political violence to our day. Assassins Brutus and Cassius dined with their fiercest enemies within days of the murder--and were then hunted down and killed. After the murder neither conspirators nor Caesar's partisans knew how to react. From these beginnings this book follows the normalization of assassination at Rome, cataloguing the murder of Caesar after Caesar and recording the means, methods, and motives of the perpetrators. How was the Roman Empire so untouched by these events? And how had the Republic contained such violence between friends for so long? Woolf shows how Caesar's death--and the puzzled reactions to it--points back to older ethics of tyrannicide. When is it justified to kill a head of state? Does extra-judicial execution provide answers worth the cost of the ensuing chaos? Ranging among texts by Cicero, Suetonius, and Seneca, plays by Shakespeare and Corneille, and the ideas of Michel Foucault and Francis Fukuyama, Woolf pursues these questions through the ages. His book tells us not only how, but why, Caesar's Vast Ghost still holds us spellbound.

In this fiendishly original new novel, Mark Leyner is a leather-blazer-wearing, Piranha 793-driving, narcotic-guzzling monster who has potential rivals eliminated by his bionically enhanced bodyguards, has his internal organs tattooed, and eavesdrops on the erotic fantasies of Victoria's Secret models -- which naturally revolve around him.Leyner's jet-propelled roller derby through the cultures of celebrity, cyberpunk, and rabid egotism is exhilaratingly bizarre, exhaustingly funny -- and you'd better hope it's just fiction. "Leyner's brilliantly discontinuous humor...begs to be read aloud to friends and strangers alike -- if only you could figure out where to stop." -- Village Voice"Leyner is a twisted wizard, a genre-busting virtuoso, working at the outer edge of narrative convention." -- Jay McInerney"Leyner is an original and immensely amusing writer as well as a provocative social critic." -- Washington Post Book World
Et- Beings 4 Man-Kind's Extraterrestrial Ancestry Transitions: Man-Kind's Extraterrestrial Ancestry Transitions (Meat)
ET-BEINGS 4 Man-kinds Extraterrestrial Ancestry Transitions (MEAT) is about the many of the alterations (Transitions), that Man-kind has gone through normal evolution and the possible "manipulated evolution" to become what our species is now in the present. How possibly Extraterrestrial intervention altered our normal Ancestry evolution development to meet certain time lines that are needed for the ET-BEINGS to develop from what they were, what they are now and what they strive to become in the future as it all stems from our primordial soup...that either "just happened" or was specifically caused to happen. Plus so much more advanced knowledge and unexpected questions and answers. What if we are a creature created by many interactions, modulations and transitions?WHAT IF no one interfered

This book examines the theme of death in the major European pastoral novels of Spain, Italy, Portugal, France and England. Through careful textual analysis, the authors show that the themes of love and death are inseparable in European literature, and that violence and death are intrinsic to the psychological landscape of pastoral.
