The first major monograph on the work of contemporary Belgian artist Fabrice Samyn Contemporary Belgian artist Fabrice Samyn (b. 1981) works in a wide variety of media, including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and recently choreography. His art engages with history and the passage of time, raising important questions about representation, idolatry, iconoclasm, and ecology in our contemporary world. In the artist’s own words, “My work attempts to reveal time, or rather natural phenomena of time (erosion for example) as creative.” One of his best-known series, “Sinai” (2010), features photographic images of the necks of Greek sculptures, cropped and lit in such a way that they become abstract landscapes. This book is the first to offer an in-depth exploration of the full scope of Samyn’s oeuvre. Copiously illustrated, the book also includes penetrating essays by prominent European philosophers and art historians.Distributed for MercatorfondsExhibition Schedule:Gallerie Sies + Hoek, Düsseldorf (2020)

The work of Fabrice Samyn is as diverse as it is complex, often referencing masterpieces of art history. In his paintings, sculptures and drawings, the artist manages to translate and magnify details from the paintings of the old masters. With his fascination for the spoken word and everyday poetry, he also follows the path taken before him by his Belgian compatriot René Magritte.
This title is a comprehensive monograph on the Swiss artist whose work has recently become known on the international scene. Author of numerous performances, printed projects, and self-organised events in the 1980s up to the mid-1990s, Gygi has always claimed a social and political dimension to his work. The architectural structures or the public systems that Gygi reproduces (screens, terraces, tents, stands, etc.) reveal the authoritative aspects and the control systems of our society. This revised and expanded publication brings together all elements of the artists production and includes several essays.

Nonsense Mutation Correction in Human Diseases: An Approach for Targeted Medicine provides an introduction on genetic diseases, discusses the prevalence of nonsense mutations, the consequences of a nonsense mutation for the expression of the mutant gene, and the presentation of the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). It presents the mechanism of action and rationale associated with each strategy to correct nonsense mutations with the results of clinical trials to further support this basis. In addition, the book shows how it may be possible to combine several of these strategies to ultimately improve the efficiency of correction, also suggesting the future goals and objectives to improve treatment modalities in this evolving sphere of personalized medicine.
Between 1815 and 1870, when European industrialisation was in its infancy and Britain enjoyed a technological lead, thousands of British workers emigrated to the continent. They played a key role in several sectors, like textiles, iron, mechanics, and the railways. These men and women thereby contributed significantly to the industrial take-off in continental Europe. Artisans Abroad examines the lives and trajectories of these workers who emigrated from manufacturing centres in Britain to France, Belgium, Germany, and other countries, considering their mobilities, their culture, their politics, and their relations with the local populations. Fabrice Bensimon reminds us that the British economy was not just oriented towards the Empire and the USA, but also towards the continent, long before the European Union and Brexit, and shows the critical role played by migrant workers in the Industrial Revolution. Artisans Abroad is the first social and cultural history of this forgotten migration.
