This book deals with the analysis, the design and the implementation of the mechatronic systems. Classical and modern tools are developed for the analysis and the design for such systems. Robust control, H-Infinity and guaranteed cost control theory are also used for analysis and design of mechatronic systems. Different controller such as state feedback, static output feedback and dynamic output feedback controllers are used to stabilize mechatronic systems. Heuristic algorithms are provided to solve the design of the classical controller such as PID, phase lead, phase lag and phase lead-lag controllers while linear matrix inequalities (LMI) algorithms are provided for finding solutions to the state feedback, static output feedback and dynamic output feedback controllers. The theory presented in the different chapters of the volume is applied to numerical examples to show the usefulness of the theoretical results. Some case studies are also provided to show how the developed concepts apply for real system. Emphasis is also put on the implementation in real-time for some real systems that we have developed in our mechatronic laboratory and all the detail is provided to give an idea to the reader how to implement its own mechatronic system.Mechatronics Systems: Analysis, Design and Implementation is an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in mechatronic system and control theory and as a reference for academic researchers in control or mathematics with interest in control theory. The reader should have completed first-year graduate courses in control theory, linear algebra, and linear systems. It will also be of great value to engineers practising in fields where the systems can be modeled by linear time invariant systems.

150 works – mostly unpublished before – signed by the Moroccan contemporary artist Fouad Bellamine in a rich, complete monograph. Moroccan contemporary artist, Fouad Bellamine, was born in Fez in 1950 and was raised amidst varied artistic and creative influences in the Medina of his home town. Bellamine came from a family of skilled craftsmen, and he learned many of his painting techniques from his father who was a talented artist. Pursuing his passion for art, from 1967 Fouad Bellamine studied at the School of Applied Arts in Casablanca, going on to the University of Paris where he completed a masters degree in the history and theory of art. He later became a professor of history and art at the University of Rabat. His first exhibition in 1972 in Rabat featured a selection of his abstract landscapes, which were well received by critics. Throughout the 1970s Bellamine explored the use of different materials in art and it is during this experimental period that he developed his unique style of minimalism with bold single-colour brush strokes which is still evident in his current work. He has been exhibiting extensively throughout Morocco, France, Belgium and the U.K. as well as worldwide such as in Spain, Portugal, Finland, the Middle East and Egypt, Senegal, California, Tunis. In 1987, he participated to the Biennale of São Paulo in Brazil. Since he had returned to Morocco in 1989, Bellamine contributed actively to the promotion of contemporary art in his country. In 1997, he initiated the creation of a permanent collection of contemporary art in the Children’s Hospital of Rabat, first experience of its kind in Morocco. His works have been acquired by several public and corporate collections such as Moroccan institutions as well as the Museum of the Arab World Institution (IMA), the National Fund for Contemporary Art (FNAC), the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Africa and Oceania all of them in Paris, the Kinda Foundation. He lives and works in Rabat.
Ahmed Fouad Negm Egypt's Revolutionary Poet. English -Translated Poetry

Ahmed Fouad Negm Egypt's Revolutionary Poet. English -Translated Poetry

This edition comprises the English-Arabic translation and analysis of the poetry of Ahmed Fouad Negm. The work of poet Ahmed Fouad Negm has sparked flashes from my past, as all his sceneries, vernacular, and intimate connection to the poorest peasants of Egypt revived my dormant memories as never before. Negm's brilliant and acute artistic senses enabled him to spare great traditional rituals from the sprawl of urbanization and global invasion of foreign cultures, throughout all corners of the universe. His unwavering expression of ideas, over many decades ahead of his own generation, has concluded mostly in realistic prophecies. That made the profane and rejected poet a true prophet of his era. The myth of how a poor orphaned city dweller could have expanded his knowledge, where many affluent figures of society failed to attain, invoked my deepest curiosity. The poem "Ward", or "Al Anbarra" in Arabic, is an emotional depiction of the salute of release of an imprisoned person by the prison guards. This is a traditional Opera-styled salute executed by all prison guards when a release order arrives "Al-Anbara" Waaaaaaaaaaard .. All hear me I Shook the dice.. Never aided me even once Gambled with dowry and tipping.. Over One Imprisonment for the free... Even was bitter Not once ..Reminded me with repentance of that turn Not once The first to the Prophet .. The second to Ayoub .. Third my solitude.. And the Fourth the fate of And the fifth..That bullied Must end up defeated The first, O Prophet liberator of man, the balsam for the afflicted and rescue of the oppressed Honored the class of men over all animals And raised the sword of guidance higher against tyranny And shouted O my people .. At all times Injustice if ever rules .. And right if ever demeaned Deprives you of rain and harvest and civilization Seas turn thirsty - In man and plants Snakes run loose.. Vultures fill skies Ruin falls on the mountain and the valley and the plains Light parts skies.. Moon's face disappear Sight lost in blindness and darkness and grief And fear topples humans by the cruelty of the jailer People fear each other ..Scare Sultan The Second, I said, Ayoub and I are two examples Ayoub when afflicted...Ayoub persevered two days Stories about Ayoub gave him two names Considered amongst prophets and illuminators together And my patience here ..in the asylum is two My patience for snatching me ..from knowledge and love My patience on ..the rule of the age The bully among us rules ..and the bully's rule shame Rule of animals over men ..rule of two horns I swear by the grave of prophet ..Mohamed with his straight eyes One day, will be erected..two scales not one I look with satisfaction for ..justice in the two scales And the Third, my solitude ..in the world of bullies The bully is protected.. the free is afflicted The jerk when empowered ..hired few drummers Hustlers, imposters, thieves, and muggers Those who love the prophet ..give another applause Dancing spread in the country right and left Flesh exposed.. Rose above words Sounds of tunes unheard..Lyrics of poetry unnoticed Strangulated words of sons..Tunes of bracelets One for the one God Two for the seriousness of Hussein Three for the misery of envy Four for the printing ink Five for my living will Six for coming tomorrow Seven for my broken heart Eight for the wanting of fellows Nine for the world at large Ten for the traitor insect I inform all of you that the prison is a fence .. I inform all of you that the thought is a light I inform all of you that the prison is senile I inform all of you that its door is fragile I inform all of you that the revolution is a thought I inform all of you that it will become a memorial I promise all of you that the gathering is tomorrow And the light within us and you.. Friends.

From Fouad Ajami, an acclaimed author and chronicler of Arab politics, comes a compelling account of how a generation of Arab intellectuals tried to introduce cultural renewals in their homelands through the forces of modernity and secularism. Ultimately, they came to face disappointment, exile, and, on occasion, death. Brilliantly weaving together the strands of a tumultuous century in Arab political thought, history, and poetry, Ajami takes us from the ruins of Beirut's once glittering metropolis to the land of Egypt, where struggle rages between a modernist impulse and an Islamist insurgency, from Nasser's pan-Arab nationalist ambitions to the emergence of an uneasy Pax Americana in Arab lands, from the triumphalism of the Gulf War to the continuing anguished debate over the Israeli-Palestinian peace accords. For anyone who seeks to understand the Middle East, here is an insider's unflinching analysis of the collision between intellectual life and political realities in the Arab world today.
The Quantum Beat

Intended for nonspecialists with some knowledge of physics or engineering, The Quantum Beat covers a wide range of salient topics relevant to atomic clocks, treated in a broad intuitive manner with a minimum of mathematical formalism. Detailed descriptions are given of the design principles of the rubidium, cesium, hydrogen maser, and mercury ion standards; the revolutionary changes that the advent of the laser has made possible, such as laser cooling, optical pumping, the formation of "optical molasses," and the cesium "fountain" standard; and the time-based global navigation systems, Loran-C and the Global Positioning System. Also included are topics that bear on the precision and absolute accuracy of standards, such as noise, resonance line shape, the relativistic Doppler effect as well as more general relativistic notions of time relevant to synchronization of remote clocks, and time reversal symmetry. This edition retains the essentially didactic approach to the treatment of the development of atomic clocks in the first edition, but brings up to date the extraordinary developments in recent years, culminating in clocks based on quantum resonance at optical frequency in individual ions confined in miniature electromagnetic traps. These, together with advances in the generation of wide-band coherent frequency combs spanning the spectrum as far as the optical range, has made possible the direct measurement of phenomena occurring at optical frequencies! As a result of these recent advances, in addition to the time-based GPS and LORAN C navigation systems treated in the first edition, other important applications of a fundamental scientific interest have become feasible. These include satellite-borne tests of the theory of general relativity and the equivalence principle on which it is based.

How have Arab political ideas and institutions evolved since the 1967 War? How have the Arabs contended with the external influences to which their wealth has exposed them? What are the implications of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism? Fouad Ajami seeks to answer these and related questions in his illuminating study of the constraints and possibilities facing the Arab world. The book documents the political and intellectual response to the defeat of 1967 and surveys the choices facing the Arab world as exemplified by the case of Egypt. It seeks to explain the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism and locates its roots in the failures of the dominant political order, and the stalemate of secular political ideas. This revised edition, first published in 1992, was updated and renewed the book's status as an indispensable guide to the politics of the Arab world.

First published in 1990. A country’s development does not take place in a vacuum and it was therefore essential in this earlier work that the main subject (the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s development) should be set into an historical, political and social context. The original edition includes a summary of this background information, starting with the Kingdom’s geographical location and proceeding with a brief account of its history, its political importance and its role in the world economy. Within this context, is described the development and progress of what the Kingdom had achieved, outlining the country’s governmental structure, its administrative divisions, its available investment potential, its prevailing legal and commercial regulations, and its future plans and ambitions. This new book, which has been structured to encompass all aspects of the Kingdom’s development, contains the latest statistical data on the Kingdom’s progress, together with the newly revised background information of the former book. Thus each of the books complements the other, for each records the relevant information at a particular stage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s continuing developmental process.
Myth and Reality in the Contemporary Islamist Movement

Myth and Reality in the Contemporary Islamist Movement

Fouad Zakariyya; Ibrahim M. Abu-Rabi

Pluto Press

sidottu
This classic book explores the intellectual, political and social foundations of Islamism, and current Islamist groups across the Arab and Muslim worlds. Written by Egyptian philosopher and leading Arab intellectual, Fouad Zakariyya, and now available for the first time in English, this thoughtful book has no rival as a critical introduction to the nature of contemporary Islamism. The book was written in the aftermath of the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, and at the height of global debates about the relevance of Islamism in contemporary Muslim societies - especially in the light of Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979. Zakariyya offers an important analysis of the multiple voices of current Islamism. He explores various recent attempts to construct an Islamic social and political order, presenting a sustained critique of modern ideological currents and theological worldviews. He delves into the sensitive question of Shari'ah, civil society and democracy in the Arab world. Ultimately, Zakariyya argues for a secular and democratic civil society that is unconstrained by past interpretations of the Shari'ah.
