The Little Book of Holy Gratitude

The Little Book of Holy Gratitude

Fr Frederick Faber

Sharp penance for remembered sins helps stouthearted Christians seize heaven, but gentler souls like Our Blessed Lady and scores of her saints have trod a different path. Their souls are possessed by gratitude, inspired by the remembrance of past benefits, and filled with wonder at the abundant loving-kindness of God. As Father Faber shows, gratitude is the fertile soil from which springs an ardent, exuberant love of Christ - a love that can be yours as well. These wise pages reveal the critical role that gratitude plays in your sanctification, and they'll remind you of the many things the Lord has given you for which you should be grateful each moment of every day. Here you'll also learn: That thanksgiving is the very essence of Christian worship Why gratitude is easiest way to heaven and the surest path to joy How gratitude dissolves pride even faster than penance How gratitude can make you like the Angels themselves That ingratitude is the hidden sin of too many good people (What about you?) Why you should even be grateful -- yes -- for blessings received by your enemies How gratitude often wins souls more quickly than preaching Why it's scandalous that we neglect gratitude more than prayer Why you should even be grateful for your troubles That gratitude brings far more blessings than most of us ever suspect Hear in this small book the voices of so many saints who knew that gratitude is the very key to holiness: St. Alphonsus de Liguori, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Bonaventure, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Francis de Sales, St. Francis Xavier, St. Gertrude, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Jane Frances de Chantal, St. Jerome, St. John Chrysostom, St. John of Avila, St. John of God, St. Lawrence Justinian, St. Louis of France, St. Peter Faber, St. Philip Neri, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thomas Aquinas, and many others.

The Venerable Pope Pius XII issued his restored order for Holy Week in the 1950's. To help priests in parishes to celebrate these intricate and beautiful ceremonies of Classic Roman Rite during this most sacred week of the liturgical year, Rev. Frederick R. McManus wrote a marvelous guide to the restored order of Holy Week in 1956 entitled "Rites of Holy Week." For the parish or chapel wanting to offer the ceremonies of Holy Week with the 1962 Missale Romanum (Extraordinary Form), this will be an indispensable guide to help the clergy and altar boys accurately rehearse the ceremonies, the sacristan to attend the needs of the sanctuary, sacristy and church, and the musicians to prepare the proper liturgical music.

The Patristic Understanding of Creation encapsulates what the Church Fathers had to say, in their own words, on the topic of creation. Going back to Roman and Byzantine times, the writings of the Church Fathers are basic to Christian theology and provide a benchmark for how Christians have traditionally understood creation. This understanding of creation, however, faces tremendous challenges in our day, especially in discussions at the intersection of science and religion. Process theology and other efforts to reconceptualize creation have explicitly opposed key elements of the Christian doctrine of creation: creation ex nihilo, the transcendence and immanence of God in creation, "the absolute creatureliness and non-self-sufficiency of the world" (to use a phrase of Fr. Georges Florovsky), the goodness of creation, and the openness of the world to divine action. All of these the Church Fathers not only held but also ably defended. This anthology is therefore not merely of academic or historical interest. In reasserting a theologically sound understanding of creation, this anthology fills a need that is both practical and urgent.
Observations Upon Lightning, and the Method of Securing Buildings From it's Effects, in a Letter to Sir Charles Frederick, &c.&c.&c. by B. Wilson, F.R.S. ... and Others
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. A recent paper on subfactors of von Neumann factors has stimulated much research in von Neumann algebras. It was discovered soon after the appearance of this paper that certain algebras which are used there for the analysis of subfactors could also be used to define a new polynomial invariant for links. Recent efforts to understand the fundamental nature of the new link invariants has led to connections with invariant theory, statistical mechanics and quantum theory. In turn, the link invariants, the notion of a quantum group, and the quantum Yang-Baxter equation have had a great impact on the study of subfactors. Our subject is certain algebraic and von Neumann algebraic topics closely related to the original paper. However, in order to promote, in a modest way, the contact between diverse fields of mathematics, we have tried to make this work accessible to the broadest audience. Consequently, this book contains much elementary expository material.
