This book explores and defends George Saunders’ causal thesis that successful stories are those that establish causation well. The book includes an in-depth discussion of causation’s role in several different key craft elements of fiction writing and examines different theories of causation and their implications for causation in fiction. Other discussions include the role of causation in building suspense, character and causation, causation in dialogue and connections between fiction and counterfactuals (or hypotheticals). The book also considers a number of objections to the causal thesis and offers a reply.

The EU, the WTO and China

The EU, the WTO and China

Francis Snyder

This book consists of a series of integrated studies of sites of governance, global legal pluralism and the regulation of international trade. It focuses on the EU, the WTO and China and is divided into three parts. Part one surveys the literature on law and globalisation and introduces the theory of sites of governance and the concept of global legal pluralism. It shows that each site of governance has a structural dimension consisting of institutions, norms and dispute resolution processes and a relational dimension which refers to relations between that site and other sites of governance. The totality of sites of governance constitute a new form of global legal pluralism. Part two then focuses on the EU, the WTO and China as three distinct but interrelated sites of governance. Concentrating in particular on the example of antidumping the chapters in this part deal with international legislation, the translation of rules in domestic law, the judicial construction of multi-site governance, the types of rules which are used to regulate international trade and relations between sites, the ways in which relations between sites can create new concepts of international trade law, the transformation of norms from soft law to hard law, and the role of strategic actors, notably national administrations and international companies, in the creation and regulation of contested markets in international trade. Part three develops the main themes further by analysing two specific instances of international trade regulation: the governance of global economic networks, and the governance of global institutions. The final chapter considers ways in which global legal pluralism can enrich and possibly reform the WTO, today the predominant institution in the regulation of international trade, including trade between the EU and China.

St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Movement breathed new life into the church in his day and in the centuries since. Yet his movement soon split into clashing branches. What went wrong? Looking at Francis differently--as organizer, not just saint--opens new windows of understanding. This book examines the way Francis put together his movement. The ways he did and did not lead. It shows why the Lesser Brothers multiplied so quickly, crossing multiple cultural barriers, on into Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It also highlights their conflicts and why they fragmented. It is impossible to understand the Franciscan movement however without understanding Francis himself. So the book begins with Francis's life, conversion, mission, and also his health issues, highlighting aspects of the story not typically found in most Francis's biographies. It identifies aspects of the story that illuminate movement dynamics. This atypical approach offers insights for today's church, its role in culture, and the stewardship and healing of the earth.
Early Gothic Column-Figure Sculpture in France
Richly illustrated, Early Gothic Column-Figure Sculpture in France is a comprehensive investigation of church portal sculpture installed between the 1130s and the 1170s. At more than twenty great churches, beginning at the Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis and extending around Paris from Provins in the east, south to Bourges and Dijon, and west to Chartres and Angers, larger than life-size statues of human figures were arranged along portal jambs, many carved as if wearing the dress of the highest ranks of French society. This study takes a close look at twelfth-century human figure sculpture, describing represented clothing, defining the language of textiles and dress that would have been legible in the twelfth-century, and investigating rationale and significance. The concepts conveyed through these extraordinary visual documents and the possible motivations of the patrons of portal programs with column-figures are examined through contemporaneous historical, textual, and visual evidence in various media. Appendices include analysis of sculpture production, and the transportation and fabrication in limestone from Paris. Janet Snyder's new study considers how patrons used sculpture to express and shape perceived reality, employing images of textiles and clothing that had political, economic, and social significances.
