Frank Stewart s Nexus presents an overview of the career of this noted photographer, who since the 1960s has captured spontaneous and sensitive portrayals of African American culture in many forms, including art, food, dance, and music especially jazz. Best known for his work as senior photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center, Stewart captured energetic street scenes and profound landscapes on his worldwide travels with the orchestra. The intimate and subtle relations between and among people are at the heart of Stewart s art, whether shot at a Manhattan jazz concert, in the studio of artist Romare Bearden, or during a sacred rite in an African village. This sweeping survey of 103 images, with an artist interview and texts by multiple critical voices, illuminates the evolution of a remarkable career.

The "over-my-shoulder" genre became prominent in the writing of Terence Reese and continued in the work of excellent writers such as Mike Lawrence and Larry Cohen. In this genre the reader gains access to the mind and thought processes of an expert. The reader encounters techniques -- such as counting and drawing inferences -- that are supposedly expert territory. Frank Stewart’s writing, which comprises books, hundreds of magazine articles and, to date, about 11,000 newspaper columns, focuses on logical thinking. During a session of bridge, a player faces hundreds of decisions. Some can be resolved instinctively, but many require reasoning. That is what makes the game so exhilarating: having a problem and figuring out the answer. In this book you sit with the author and can compare your decisions with his. You won't agree with all his actions – bridge involves personal style and judgment – but you will find it instructive to listen in on his thoughts.

Throughout the twentieth century, few countries in Asia suffered more from foreign occupation, civil war, and international military conflict than Korea. The Colors of Dawn brings together the moving and powerful voices of over forty Korean poets from these turbulent years. From 1903 to 1945, the Japanese Empire occupied the Korean peninsula and instituted measures to annihilate the nation and its culture. After Japan's defeat in WWII, Korea became a killing ground during the Korean War (1950 to 1953). During this period and into the 1980s, South Korea was controlled by a military dictatorship, and today it remains on war footing. In the midst of internal and external conflicts, Korea's poets—threatened by the authorities with torture, imprisonment, and death—found ways to express their fierce desire for freedom and self-governance. The result is a century of outstanding poetry, from Sim Hun (1901) to more familiar modern and contemporary poets, such as Kim Chi-ha and Ko ?n.

This text analyzes the elusive notion of "honour". Drawing on information about Western ideas of honour from sources as diverse as medieval Arthurian romances, Spanish dramas of the 16th and 17th centuries and the writings of German jurists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and comparing the European ideas with the ideas of a non-Western society - the Bedouin - the author argues that honour must be understood as a right, basically a right to respect. He shows that by understanding honour this way, we can resolve some of the paradoxes that have long troubled scholars, and can make sense of certain institutions (for instance, the medieval European pledge of honour) that have not hitherto been properly understood.

A Half Century of Municipal Reform: The History of the National Municipal League provides an in-depth chronicle of the League’s origins, programs, and contributions to municipal reform from 1894 to 1944, with occasional references extending to 1948. This study examines the conditions that led to the League’s creation, its strategies for improving local governance, and the challenges it faced, evaluating its impact over fifty years of advocacy. Drawing extensively from the League’s publications, personal files, and public archives in cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Berkeley, the author combines documentary analysis with insights gained from interviews with key figures, including past Secretaries Clinton Rogers Woodruff and Harold W. Dodds. With access to unique collections like Richard S. Childs’ materials on the short ballot, this comprehensive work captures the evolution and influence of this pivotal organization in shaping better municipal governance. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1950.
