The Church in Emerging Culture: Five Perspectives

The Church in Emerging Culture: Five Perspectives

What should the church look like today? What should be the focus of its message? How should I present that message? We live in as pivotal and defining an age as the Great Depression or the Sixties–a period whose definition, say some cultural observers, includes a warning of the church’s influence. The result? A society measurably less religious but decidedly more spiritual. Less influenced by authority than by experience. More attuned to images than to words. How does the church adapt to such a culture? Or should it, in fact, eschew adapting for maintaining a course it has followed these last two millennia? Or something in between? These are exactly the questions asked in The Church In Emerging Culture by five Christian thinker-speaker-writers, each who advocate unique stances regarding what the church’s message should be (and what methods should be used to present it) as it journeys through this evolving, postmodern era. The authors are: Andy Crouch–Re:Generation Quarterly editor-in-chief Michael Horton–professor and reformed theologian Frederica Mathewes-Green–author, commentator, and Orthodox Christian Brian D. McLaren–postmodernist, author, pastor, and Emergent senior fellow Erwin Raphael McManus–author and pastor of the innovative and interethnic L.A.-based church, Mosaic Most unique about their individual positions is that they’re presented not as singular essays but as lively discussions in which the other four authors freely (and frequently) comment, critique, and concur. That element, coupled with a unique photographic design that reinforces the depth of their at-once congenial and feisty conversation, gives you all-access entrée into this groundbreaking discourse. What’s more, general editor Leonard Sweet (author of SoulTsunami and AquaChurch, among several other acclaimed texts) frames the thought-provoking dialogue with a profoundly insightful, erudite introductory essay–practically a book within a book. The Church In Emerging Culture is foundational reading for leaders and serious students of all denominations and church styles.

Pauline Frederick Reporting

Pauline Frederick Reporting is the biography of the life and career of the first woman to become a network news correspondent. After no less an authority than Edward R. Murrow told her there was no place for her in broadcasting, Pauline Frederick (1908–90) cracked the good old boys' club through determination and years of hard work, eventually becoming a trusted voice to millions of television viewers. During Frederick's nearly fifty years as a journalist, she interviewed a young Fidel Castro, covered the Nuremberg trials, interpreted diplomatic actions at the United Nations, and was the first woman to moderate a presidential debate. The life of this pivotal figure in American journalism provides an inside perspective on the growth and political maneuverings of television networks as well as Frederick's relationships with iconic NBC broadcast figures David Brinkley, Chet Huntley, and others. Although Frederick repeatedly insisted that she would trade her career, glamorous as it was, to have a family, a series of romances ended in heartache when she did indeed choose her work over love. At the age of sixty-one, however, she married and attained the family life she had always wanted. Her story is one for all modern women striving to balance career and family.

On 24 August 1867, the remains of eight-year-old Fanny Adams were discovered in a hop field close to her home in Alton, Hampshire. She had been decapitated and horribly mutilated; her limbs and internal organs were scattered over a wide area. It was butchery on a truly colossal scale. Local solicitor's clerk Frederick Baker was quickly apprehended and committed for trial at the winter assizes in Winchester. Few people doubted that he was solely responsible for the murder of little Fanny Adams. Baker was a decidedly odd character, often seen skulking around town exhibiting a range of morbid and eccentric behaviours. His corpse-white complexion and black top hat composed his trademark appearance. This book charts his upbringing, his family life and career, and his depraved emotional and sexual impulses, fully exploring his progression from a weak and sensitive child to a swaggering, intemperate monster. Legal opinion was divided: was Baker mentally deranged, or was he a cunning, cold-blooded and wicked individual fully in command of his faculties? These issues would be examined in the courtroom, and in a sense, medical science itself, with its new ideas about psychological disease, homicidal mania and criminal responsibility, was also on trial. The defence offered a confusing and contradictory double plea of Not Guilty but also Guilty and Insane. The jury rejected both defences, and Baker was hanged outside Winchester prison on Christmas Eve in front of a large crowd. Baker has received remarkably little attention in the extensive literature on Victorian crime. Drawing on Home Office files and making use of a wide selection of local history materials, Trial of Frederick Baker tells for the first time the full story of the murder of Fanny Adams and the trial and conviction of one of Britain's most appalling villains.
