Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen

Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen

Frederick J. Barclay

Fuel cell technology is the most exciting and legitimate alternative source of power currently available to us as world resources of non-renewable fuel continue to be depleted. No other power generating technology holds the same benefits that fuel cells offer, including high reliability and efficiency, negligible environmental impact, and security of supply. Fuel cells run on hydrogen – the simplest and most plentiful gas in the universe - although they can also run on carbon monoxide, methane, or even coal. Their applications are diverse, from powering automobiles, buildings and portable electronics, to converting methane gas from wastewater plants and landfills into electricity. Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen is a controversial text that challenges the accepted industry parameters for measuring fuel cell performance and efficiency. Based on his inter-disciplinary experience in the fields of power, nuclear power, and desalination, the author contends that the development potential of the fuel cell is related to the quantity fuel chemical exergy, which, like electrical potential, is a quantitative measure of work done. The fuel cell community currently characterises these devices in terms of the enthalpy of combustion (calorific value) – however the author argues a correct, qualitatively different and fourfold larger characterisation is via the fuel chemical exergy, in units of work, and not energy. He asserts that the distortion introduced by this accepted perspective needs to be corrected before relatively efficient fuel cells, integrated with comparatively low performing gas turbines, reach the market. Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen features a foreword by Dr Gerry Agnew, Executive VP Engineering of Rolls Royce Fuel Cells Systems Ltd. It is essential reading for all engineers involved with fuel cells and/ or the manufacture of hydrogen from natural gas, as well as academics in related disciplines such as thermodynamics, physical chemistry, materials, physics, mechanical and chemical engineering.

Combined Power and Process

A thoroughly revised and redesigned edition of this excellent title, previously published in 1995. The practical application of second law energy analysis and associated thermoeconomics is increasingly generating practical applications. It is the aim of Combined Power and Process ? An Exergy Approach to accelerate this process by providing selected examples of applications which demonstrate the fresh and altered sense of proportion obtainable from exergy methods. Using exergy analysis attention is successfully channelled towards economic improvement, and this book can thus be recommended as a valuable aid to all those engineers and designers associated with the analysis of engineering projects involving, for example, power generation, thermal processes, chemical reactions, electrolysis, or osmosis, to name but a few.
Frederick William IV and the Prussian Monarchy 1840-1861
This is the first full-scale study in English of the reign of Frederick William IV, King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861, and arguably the most important German monarch in the century between the death of Frederick the Great and the accession of William II. Although Frederick William has long been criticized as a Romantic reactionary who was utterly out of touch with his times, this study reaches different conclusions, arguing that he was in fact a modern and in many ways, 'successful' monarch. The book is not a biography in the traditional sense. Rather, it focuses on the structures, institutions and transformations of the monarchial system in Prussia during a time of revolutionary change. It thus represents a contribution to our understanding of the structures of the nineteenth-century European state, and the strategies by which conservative elites were able to adjust themselves to new circumstances.

A collection of some of the work of Frederick J Almgren, Jr, the man most noted for defining the shape of geometric variational problems and for his role in founding The Geometry Center. It includes a summary by Sheldon Chang of the famous 1,700 page paper on singular sets of area-minimizing $m$-dimensional surfaces in $R^n$.
