The selected spectra presented in this volume are a testimony to the diversity of mineral carbonates. Their compositional variety embraces many of the chemical elements and is increased by the frequent presence of solid solution between members. They occur in all the broad categories of rock types: igneous, metamorphic, metasomatic and sedimentary; and they are often associated with important ores and rare element deposits. Carbonates are not only of significance in the geological domain, but also in industry and materials science. Accurate identification of the compounds is, therefore, vital for a proper understanding of any carbonate bearing system. The development of Fourier transform infrared spectrometry has been for some years at the stage where the acquisition of spectra is relatively simple, rapid and with good resolution. For identifi- tion, the method is inexpensive and can provide additional information on the nature of the chemical bonding. It is particularly suited to carbonates because of its ability to discriminate clearly between the different members. It is obvious that to be able to produce a large set of definitive spectra, a source of we- characterized minerals is required, but the location of such a source is not necessarily so obvious. Our two museums - The Natural History Museum in London and the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh - have joined forces to provide such a source, using their renowned mineral collections and authenticating each mineral by modern advanced methods of analysis and identifi- tion.

This has significant implications for dealing with al Qa'ida and suggests fundamentally rethinking post-9/11 U.S. counterterrorism strategy: Policing and intelligence, not military force, should form the backbone of U.S. efforts against al Qa'ida.All terrorist groups end. But how do they end? Most groups since 1968 have ended because they joined the political process or are defeated by police and intelligence services. This has significant implications for countering al Qa'ida.

Since 2001, Pakistan has undertaken a number of operations against militant groups, including al Qa'ida, that directly affect U.S. national security. Despite some successes, militant groups continue to present a significant threat to Pakistan, the United States, and a range of other countries. Pakistan will not be able to deal with the militant threat over the long run unless it does a more effective job of addressing the root causes of the crisis and makes security of the civilian population, rather than destroying the enemy, its top counter insurgency priority. In addition, Pakistan needs to abandon militancy as a tool of its foreign and domestic policy; it sends a confusing message internally and has a large potential to backfire.

In recent years, the suprasylvian gyrus of the cat has attracted the attention of many neurophysiologists and experimental psychologists and the variety of their interests is reflected in the number of morphological and functional sub- divisions which have been made of it. Some of these subdivisions are shown in Fig. 1. Workcrs concerned with t. hc visual system havc made studies of the third visual area (awa to) on the medial aspect. of thc gyrus, and of the latcral supra- sylvian area on the lateral aspeet, both of which contain representations of the retina (Clare and Bishop, 1954; Hubel and Wiesel, 1965, 1969; Wright, 1969). However, the full extent of these areas and particularly of the latter, is still not known. Other workers have investigated the extent of the gyrus activated by somatic sensory (Darian. Smith, Isbister, Mok and Yokota, 1966) or auditory (Woolsey, 1961) stimuli. A third field of incrcasing interest is the study of the "polysensory areas" of the cortex, two of which are situated in the middle supra- sylvian gyrus. In these areas, in animals anaesthetized with chloralose, conver- gence upon single neurons of auditory, somatic and visual impulses has been demonstrated (see ego Thompson, Johnson and Hoopes, 1963; Dubner and Rut- ledge, 1964, 1965; Dubner, 1966; Bignall, 1967) and it has been proposed that these areas play an important part in the central processing of sensory information (Buser and Bignall, 1967; Thompson, 1967).

The definitive book on what is known about the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene archaeological record in the Southeast The 1996 benchmark volume The Paleoindian and Early Archaic Southeast, edited by David G. Anderson and Kenneth E. Sassaman, was the first study to summarize what was known of the peoples who lived in the Southeast when ice sheets covered the northern part of the continent and mammals such as mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and ground sloths roamed the landscape.The American Southeast at the End of the Ice Age provides an updated, definitive synthesis of current archaeological research gleaned from an array of experts in the region. It is organized in three parts: state records, the regional perspective, and reflections and future directions. Chapters survey a diversity of topics including the distribution of the earliest archaeological sites in the region, chipped-stone tool technology, the expanding role of submerged archaeology, hunter-gatherer lifeways, past climate changes and the extinction of megafauna on the transitional landscape, and evidence of demographic changes at the end of the Ice Age. Discussion of the ethical responsibilities regarding the use of private collections and the relationship of archaeologists and the avocational community, insight from outside the Southeast, and considerations for future research round out the volume.

How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs?
