Die Frage nach dem Wahrheitsgehalt der sallustianischen Geschichtsschreibung spielt zwar seit jeher eine bedeutsame Rolle in der Sallust-Forschung, ist jedoch bisher nicht hinreichend beantwortet worden, so dass ein uneinheitliches Sallust-Bild in der Forschung besteht. Diese Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Bewertung Sallusts als Historiker, indem sie sein Werk uber die Catilinarische Verschworung im Hinblick auf die historische Glaubwurdigkeit der Darstellung untersucht. Im Ergebnis werden mehr als 60 historiographische Widerspruche in toto festgestellt, ihr Zustandekommen im einzelnen analysiert, erklart und in einem -Klassifizierungsmodell- erfasst. Auf dieser neuen Grundlage wird abschliessend eine Beurteilung Sallusts als Historiker gegeben."
