Gaetano Donizetti dominierte die italienische Oper von 1835 bis 1845 und erlebt seit einigen Jahren eine Renaissance. Diese Arbeit besch ftigt sich mit seinem permanenten Konflikt zwischen den pragmatischen Erfordernissen des Theaterbetriebs und dem Bem hen, die damals g ltigen Formschemata den dramatischen Situationen anzupassen. Ausschlaggebend f r die Untersuchungen waren die vielen nderungen, die Donizetti in seinen Partituren vornahm. Inwieweit widerspiegeln diese Korrekturen k nstlerische Absichten oder einfach praktische Notwendigkeiten? Diese Frage wurde auf verschiedenen Ebenen er rtert, ausgehend von Schwerpunkten wie der Cabaletta oder der Finalarie. Die Studie st tzt sich in erster Linie auf die autographen Partituren und ber cksichtigt auch wenig bekannte sowie fr he Werke. Damit entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild vom Schaffen eines Komponisten, der immer wieder berraschend experimentierfreudig mit den Konventionen seiner Zeit umging.

Gaetano donizetti var redan under sin levnad en av de mest uppskattade och firade operatonsättarna i Europa. Ännu i dag är hans musik älskad, hans operor spelas ideligen och står ständigt på repertoaren på världens alla operahus. Verkförteckningen är diger med 70 operor, alla av hög kvalitet och lyskraft. Under hela sitt vuxna liv var Donizetti sjuk i syfilis som långsamt bröt ned såväl kropp som själ. När han stod på höjden av sin enastående förmåga var han redan svårt sjuk, mot slutet av karriären var hans tillstånd katastrofalt dåligt. Mirakulöst nog förmådde han ändå att oförtrutet skriva musik på högsta konstnärliga nivå. De sista åren blev dock eländiga och hela hans livssituation fullkomlig hjärtskärande ömkligt. När sjukdomen slog till med full kraft konsulterades de förnämsta läkare som gick att uppbringa i Paris. Flera av dem var världsauktoriteter inom sitt område och har för alltid skrivit in sina namn i medicinhistorien. Trots detta blev den medicinska behandlingen medioker. Denna levnadsbeskrivning av Donizetti är fokuserad på hans sjukdom och dess djupt tragiska konsekvenser av dramatiska, ja nästan operamässiga dimensioner. För första gången ges här också en sammanställning och utförlig beskrivning av Donizettis många läkare och den behandling de erbjöd sin världsberömde patient. Därigenom ges samtidigt en god inblick i den medicinska standarden i Europa under 1800-talets första hälft. Boken riktar sig såväl till operaentusiasten som till den allmänkulturellt och medicinhistoriskt vetgirige.
