Winner of the 2016 Charlotte Mew Prize The centerpiece of Odd Mercy is "The Little Mommy Sonnets," a crown of sonnets that carries us poignantly through the life and death of the poet's mother, as well as their complicated bond over time. I was impressed with Gail Thomas' dedication to craft, her richness of detail and especially her deft transitions from the end line of one sonnet to the opening line of the next. The challenge here is to repeat the line, but to make it new, to show us another facet, and Thomas does that so skillfully in these poems, propelling us forward through the narrative. Poetry uses words to convey what is beyond words, to say the unsayable. The last line of Odd Mercy expresses this paradox tenderly as the poet reflects on her mother: "your words/now gibberish, your voice always in my head."-Ellen Bass, Judge of the Charlotte Mew Prize The stunning centerpiece of Odd Mercy, "The Little Mommy Sonnets" explores a complicated mother/daughter relationship that is turned on its head by dementia. "Did we find each other too late or just in time?" asks the daughter as her mother's "sharp tongue dissolves" and her own "armor melts." Beautifully written, heartfelt, generous, and forgiving, all the poems in this collection touched my heart deeply. Gail Thomas is a poet of tremendous talent.-Lesl a Newman, author of I Carry My Mother On Waving Back (2015) These are poems of authority and grace, alive with the pulse of desire and the mystery of our deep connections.-Joan Larkin Thomas brings precise observation and earned wisdom to poems in which the "bitter and the sweet entwine."-Robin Becker

Authors Gail Thomas and her dear mama, Jean Castelow, had the vision for this sunset book after Mrs. Jean became very sick and was completely down for four days. When she awoke, her excitement was amazing as she told of how she appeared before Jesus in Heaven. He was surrounded with children and babies and told her He would come get her later, but this time, He needed her to come back and convince Gail to complete this sunset book to inspire his people who enjoy God's awesome sunsets. The authors included their soothing prayers and photographs of sunsets that were sent by God. Even though Gail's dear mama passed away on August 3, 2016, Gail knew her mama's heart was in the book. She decided to put her time and work into making her mama's wish become her legacy. It was her heart to have a sunset book for others to enjoy. Gail would like to give all the glory to God for giving her the title of the book, and having it published with the help of Christian Faith Publishing company. We are looking forward to seeing what God does with this sunset book Gail adds, "Mama and I prayed daily that you will receive a blessing while reading this book. Praise God "

This book, Healing Prayers for Women in Jesus' Name, was written to let women know how much they are loved by God. After retiring from teaching young children, Gail and her mama, Ms. Jean spent over five years together worshiping God, reading the Bible and singing hymns together. Gail's dear mama became ill, and the doctors were not sure she would make it. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and they almost lost her. Four days later, she awoke in her hospital room smiling, and telling Gail that she had been with Jesus. Mrs. Jean was so excited, and Gail truly believed her. Gail's mama told her that she went to Heaven and talked to Jesus. He asked Ms. Jean if she would come back and help encourage her daughter to finish this women's book. She saw her loved ones, held her precious granddaughter she longed to hold, and agreed to come back, so that Gods will for them would be done Even though Jean passed away on August 3, 2016, Gail promised her she would do what Jesus told her to do. Thanks to Faith Christian Publishing Company, mama's heart, this book will be shared with many women. Mrs. Gail is so humbled by this book and prays it will touch women's lives everywhere. It is also Ms. Jean's heart and legacy May God bless this book for women Gail adds, "I learned so much during this time with Mama. I learned to be humble, more patient, and to stop complaining. I also learned that God's timing is always the best, and he will never lead you to do something for Jesus, without equipping you to do his will. Many human angels have touched our lives and we pray that they will be blessed. Our prayer for you is that you will receive a special blessing from this book and appreciate God's beautiful nature. We also pray that you will receive his salvation through grace, and worship him each day. He made you and he loves you just the way you are. We also pray that you will receive a special blessing from the Lord, and we pray you will be drawn closer to your Heavenly Father. Be blessed, dear woman. Jesus loves you Your faith will make you whole "

Gail Thomas and Jean Castelow, a daughter and her mama, completed this book using nature photographs taken at or near their home near beautiful Lake Seminole, near Donalsonville, Georgia. We dedicate this book to all storm victims in Seminole County, Ga. Also, our surrounding counties, Mexico Beach and Panama City, Florida. We hope you know that God sent his son, Jesus, to die for us and resurrected him to sit at his right side and take us to Heaven when we die if we will accept him as our Savior and give our lives to him. His Holy Spirit can guide us and help us each day on our earthly journey. People can see Jesus in our hearts on earth, and we can pray for healing and comfort anytime and receive his strength and power. Gail and her mama love Jesus, which is reflected in the poetry book. The Bible speaks of angels as messengers who are sent by God to help us at times in our lives. Our prayer is that you will be encouraged, healed, and inspired by this book, and always comforted, knowing God's angels are with your every day. Love and Prayers, Gail Thomas

As a registered nurse, Gail Stewart Frare knew too well all the terrible medical possibilities that could devastate a person, and couldn't help but fret over her two sons, Jeff and Christopher. By the time Christopher entered his teen years as healthy as his older brother, her worries subsided. Then the unspeakable happened. While on a spring break trip to visit Jeff, fifteen-year-old Christopher nearly died from a virus-induced heart failure-becoming one of the only six in one hundred thousand people who suffer from post viral cardiomyopathy. Shortly thereafter, he had to undergo heart transplant surgery. The transplant was successful, but eventually his medication made him vulnerable to an aggressive form of cancer, and he died at the age of twenty-two. After his death, Frare found an entry in her son's journal declaring, "True, unadulterated joy in my life is to write at least one piece of literary mastery." Painkillers and Gummi Bears is a coauthored mother-son memoir about facing fear, enduring pain, and choosing love. In writing it, the author holds out the very real hope that what you suffer will not ultimately crush you.

January 15, 2000. The message has been posted on the message board. "Would like to locate other Theinerts..." It would take 8 years to get a response. "I think this is your family " What happened after that is beyond words A piece of our journey is a story about history and how history lives. It takes us to a place where the past becomes a part of you and you become a part of the past, through the bloodline passed down through your ancestors, to you, to us, to many others. This is a story about how two somewhat distant cousins met on the Internet and grew to become more than family. It is a search for the past, for now, and for the future. Inside these pages are our stories and they are your stories. There's something about these people and their lives that still touch us, still mold us and make us who we are today. We might not know which piece of us came from whom exactly, but we are a part of these people and they are a part of us. We are also a part of each other, even as distant family. This book documents Johann Karl Gottlieb Theunert and Johanna Rosalie Mennig, emigrants from Prussia to the United States. It follows their descendants through 8 generations to the present day. It contains photos of the family, their birth/marriage/death records, the location of their grave stones and photos of their graves (if we have them). It also contains some rather interesting newspaper articles we have found on the family, stories about our journey in researching the Theunert family, as well our best attempt to piece together their immigration story. Surnames include: Theunert, Theinert, Ahl, Alence, Allen, Altieri, Ames, Aycrigg, Bachman, Bachulus, Bader, Baker, Balogh, Banner, Barrette, Bean, Beattie, Beebe, Bennett, Bergmann, Blessing, Bohenko, Borras, Bourgarde, Boyko, Brandes, Briggs, Brindamour, Brouilette, Brulett, Browning, Burns, Burris, Carbone, Carl, Ceminski, Cesan, Chaffee, Churchill, Cinelli, Clarke, Cody, Connery, Cook, Costanzo, Cowles, Craig, Crawford, Crouss, Cyrus, Dahl, Dahlheim, Danforth, Dashney, Davide, Davis, Dean, DeBaise, Delmonaco, Dimarco, Donovan, Dorschel, Drachler, Dubois, Dundon, Dupre, Durgin, Edwards, Egan, Ellison, Ellsberg, English, Equi, Eroshevich, Farina, Fecke, Feige, Felton, Ferris, Flagg, Flaviani, Fletcher, Ford, Fraley, Froehlich, Gaboury, Gagnon, Gallagher, Ganger, Gasink, Gevry, Gimlich, Goode, Gosse, Graham, Granquist, Greiner, Guthrie, Gutterson, Habershon, Hadsell, Hagenow, Hall, Hansen, Hanzl, Hardy, Harris, Hatton, Hauser, Hayes, Heisler, Hey, Hite, Hoisve, Hooey, Hopfner, Humphrey, Jackson, Jacobsen, Jasse, Johnson, Kaarlsen, Kelley, Kenney, Kerens, Klenovic, Krueger, Labadie, Lachapelle, LaPointe, Lasker, Lawler, Learned, Lester, Lopes, Lowe, Lucy, Marass, Mason, McClain, McDaniel, McDonough, Meiggs, Mennig (M nnig), Merritt, Misarti, Misto, Mitchell, Monahan, Moore, Mullikin, Nicholson, Norcliffe, Nyland, O'Brien, Otwell, Pajak, Pate, Peach, Poliak, Pond, Porter, Pratt, Reams, Reive, Rennie, Rheel, Rhinehart, Rieke, Rizza, Roberts, Robinson, Roederer, Rutkowski, Ruyffelaert, Rychlec, Sampson, Schaier, Schaser, Schlageter, Schlomann, Schwarze, Senter, Setzer, Shorey, Simonelli, Sinclair, Slade, Slattery, Sonntag, Southworth, Stevens, Stewart, Taylor, Tell, Thayer, Thomas, Thompson, Tiffany, Timmerman, Troio, Truax, Turner, Valkoun, Vernava, Vogel, Walker, Walsh, Wackenheim, West, Wiknik, Willis, Wilton, Wolschendorf, Young, Zambrello, Zelanin, Zesk

In Teaching Matters Most, Thomas McCann, Alan C. Jones, and Gail Aronoff make the case that the single most important factor in continuous school improvement is the quality of instruction in schools. Unlike other books that stop at evaluating teachers and instruction, these authors argue that school leaders must work to grow the instructional capacities within their schools. To meet this goal, they offer school leaders a three-step process that involves:(1) envisioning what good teaching looks like (2) measuring the quality of current instruction against this standard, and (3) working relentlessly to move the quality of instruction closer and closer to the ideal.

Vital signs, the pulses and patterns of the body, are indicators of essential life functions. The powerful work of Joe Feddersen reveals, like vital signs themselves, the state of the human condition from the vantage point of a contemporary artist who has inherited an ancient aesthetic tradition.Arising from Plateau Indian iconographic interpretations of the human-environment relationship, Feddersen's prints, weavings, and glass sculptures explore the interrelationships between contemporary urban place markers and indigenous design. Following in the footsteps of his Plateau Indian ancestors who "spoke to the land in the patterns of the baskets," Feddersen interprets the urbanscapes and the landscapes surrounding him and transforms those rhythms into art forms that are both coolly modern and warmly expressionistic.Joe Feddersen was born in 1953, in Omak, Washington, just off the Colville Indian Reservation. His mother was Okanogan and Lakes from Penticton, Canada; his father was the son of German immigrants. He has been a member of the art faculty at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, since 1989.Rebecca J. Dobkins is a curator at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art and associate professor of anthropology at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon. Barbara Earl Thomas is a painter and writer living in Seattle.
