Excerpt: My "Journey to Success" required me to travel through the 3 "zones" of life. This journey draws many parallels to the Israelites in Egypt. The journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land paints a powerful perspective of three distinct zones people live in regarding God's abundance. In one way or another, you are living in one of the three zones today: Egypt - The zone of "Never Enough", Wilderness - The zone of "Barely Enough", Canaan - The zone of "More Than Enough".

How do we see? This question has fascinated and perplexed philosophers and scientists for millennia. In visual perception, mind and world meet, when light reflected from objects enters the eyes and stimulates the nerves leading to activity in the brain near the back of the head. This neural activity yields conscious experiences of a world in three dimensions, clothed in colors, and immediately recognized as (say) ground, sky, grass, trees, and friends. The visual brain also produces nonconscious representations that interact with other brain systems for perception and cognition and that help to regulate our visually guided actions. But how does all of this really work? The answers concern the physiology, psychology, and philosophy of visual perception and cognition. Gary Hatfield's essays address fundamental questions concerning, in Part I, the psychological processes underlying spatial perception and perception of objects; in Part II, psychological theories and metaphysical controversies about color perception and qualia; and, in Part III, the history and philosophy of theories of vision, including methodological controversies surrounding introspection and involving the relations between psychology and the fields of neuroscience and cognitive science. An introductory chapter provides a unified overview; an extensive reference list rounds out the volume.

About 15 years ago, Gary Corcoran got a phone call from his long-time friends Wally and Kevin and his wife Dale, who were visiting London, England. Kevin said they had rented a beautiful flat that not only had a great kitchen, but was next door to Harrods, home of the world-famous food hall. "How about coming over and cooking a nice dinner with us?" Kevin joked. That was all the invitation Gary needed. He bought a plane ticket from Newfoundland to London that afternoon, and before you knew it, he was off to shop at Harrods. That's where he got the inspiration for one of the recipes in his book: shrimp wrapped in prosciutto with Dijon mustard and saut ed in garlic butter. Cookbooks hold a place of honour in the Corcoran household, and Gary has scribbled over many of them with notes and ideas on how he could improve or change each dish. He has become known for creating new dishes for family gatherings or for the many charity dinners he has cooked for over the past 10 years. Since he was diagnosed with ALS, he has worked at transforming his personal notebooks and cookbook scribbles into proper recipes for others to enjoy. This cookbook includes Gary's take on traditional recipes from home, recipes inspired by dishes he enjoyed while away, and those he just invented on the spot. Gary is donating 100% of the proceeds from sales of this cookbook to charity: half to ALS research at Sunnybrook Hospital to find a cure for sporadic ALS and half to his Stokers Group of the St. John's Rotary Club.
Gary, the Most American of All American Cities

Gary, the Most American of All American Cities

S. Paul O'Hara

Indiana University Press

U.S. Steel created Gary, Indiana. The new steel plant and town built on the site in 1906 were at once a triumph of industrial capitalism and a bold experiment in urban planning. Gary became the canvas onto which the American public projected its hopes and fears about modern, industrial society. In its prime, Gary was known as "the magic city," "steel's greatest achievement," and "an industrial utopia"; later it would be called "the very model of urban decay." S. Paul O'Hara traces this stark reversal of fortune and reveals America's changing expectations. He delivers a riveting account of the boom or bust mentality of American industrialism from the turn of the 20th century to the present day.

Gary Snyder and the American Unconscious
This book presents a new theory of American culture based not on the phenomenologically- and existentially-derived vocabularies of consciousness, which have dominated earlier accounts, but rather on a revitalized notion of the unconscious. Drawing on the writings of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, Dean develops a theory of the constitution of the very notion of America itself as based on a complicated relation to the American landscape.
