Georgios Chortatsis (fl. 1576-96): Plays of the Veneto-Cretan Renaissance
Georgios Chortatsis, a contemporary of Shakespeare, was the greatest playwright of Venetian Crete. His works, noted for their originality of conception, psychological insight, tender lyricism, and genial or bawdy humour, demonstrate wide knowledge of the classics and Italian Cinquecento literature. Writing in a polished form of the Cretan dialect of modern Greek, he produced for the entertainment of upper-class audiences the pastoral comedy Panoria, the tragedy Erophile, and the urban comedy Katzarapos; the anonymous comedy Stathis, too, has been ascribed to him. Also included are fourteen interludes meant to accompany performances of these four plays, on chivalric and mythological themes suggested by T. Tasso and Ovid; at least nine of these are certainly by Chortatsis. Rosemary Bancroft-Marcus, in the first volume of her bilingual Greek-English edition, provides the reading public with a unique compendious edition of all the plays and interludes traditionally ascribed to Chortatsis. New texts of the works, exhaustively revised from the extant textual witnesses, are presented with an innovative phonetically-based accent system designed to facilitate scansion of the fifteen-syllable rhyming couplets and the terza rima tragic chorus. The Greek texts are accompanied and elucidated by clear English translations, set Loeb-style in parallel against the Greek. The translation, in rhythmical English blank verse intended to be performable, attempts to convey the tone, dramatic impact, and stylistic effects of the original. The second and companion volume, under preparation for publication in 2014, will offer historical, literary, linguistic and editorial material in the form of a lengthy general Introduction, a Commentary on specific passages in the works, an Apparatus Criticus explaining the basis for the Greek texts in Volume I, an extensive Glossary, and a Bibliography. A new biographical identification of the playwright, connecting him with members of the Cretan Neoplatonic Academies, will be offered.

The Prosopography of the Middle Byzantine Period is a comprehensive biographical dictionary for the Eastern Mediterranean, including Byzantine Italy, in the Early Middle Ages. It is published in two sections, each comprising five volumes, and documents over 20,000 people. The first section covers the period from 641 to 867, the second extends to 1025. Apart from the five main volumes, each section contains an additional introductory volume, Prolegomena , containing principally information about the most important sources for the period – both Byzantine and non-Byzantine – together with a concluding volume with the definitive list of abbreviations, the indexes, and addenda and corrigenda. The work covers firstly all Byzantines mentioned either by name or anonymously in the relevant Byzantine and non-Byzantine sources, and secondly all persons mentioned in the Byzantine sources both from Western Europe and from the Arabic and Slavonic areas, together with those from the Christian East. The articles on the individual people bring together all known details in each case and give information on the present state of research. Both sections contain comprehensive indexes of names, variants of names, offices, titles, places and geographical terms, which facilitate use of the work. A subject index and online versions of all the indexes are in preparation. Thus the Prosopography is a research instrument of use both to the specialist and to all those just looking for rapid information on individuals, a region or a particular event.
The Dodecanese and the Eastern Aegean Islands in Late Antiquity, AD 300-700
The Dodecanese and the Eastern Aegean Islands in Late Antiquity, AD 300-700 is a regional study of the history, archaeology, and religious profile of the Late Antique Dodecanese (the islands of the south-eastern Aegean, centred on Rhodes), exploring how the spread of Christianity altered these communities and how the prosperity of the eastern Roman Empire, and the new capital in Constantinople, affected their life. Incorporating comparative evidence from the rest of the Aegean islands and both the Greek and Turkish mainlands, the volume analyses material from the whole area as part of a wider system of social and economic relations, political history, and culture. Accompanied by an extensive archaeological gazetteer, it presents the administrative and political history of the islands and considers the written and archaeological evidence for the monotheistic communities of the eastern Aegean, offering a closer examination of the late history of pagan temples and the transition to Christianity. It discusses the settlement and economic history of the islands, focusing on the urban history of Rhodes and Kos, but also on the numerous key non-urban sites from the rest of the islands, in particular the extended ruins of a barely known site located in the small island of Saria, north of Karpathos. The final chapter addresses the seventh century-which saw the destruction of so much of what had been built up in the fourth to sixth centuries-when the islands' societies acquired a new role for the State as naval outposts, functioning as a border zone in the course of the Arab-Byzantine wars.
Organized Crime

Organized Crime

For many people around the world, instances of what is described as organized crime may be part of their everyday experience; in their neighbourhoods, their streets, and the places they work and live. Policymakers, law enforcement, and the media rarely fail to bring up the issue when discussing the nature and seriousness of contemporary criminal threats, and the appropriate responses towards them. Many more people are familiar with the notion of organized crime, as the film and TV industry regularly draw on fictional and real figures and situations. Organized crime feels like a tangible, inescapable issue in today's world. In this Very Short introduction, Georgios A. Antonopoulos and Georgios Papanicolaou uncover the reality of organized crime in our world today. Shining a light on the people involved in organized crime, Antonopoulos and Papanicolaou question whether the term 'organized' is used to evoke the image, the operations, and power of a legitimate organization, such as a corporation. Discussing whether there are particular crimes that the label 'organized crime' applies to, or if any crime can be organized, they also consider what happens when organized crime extends beyond borders. Using examples from across the globe, they analyse the different cultural traditions of organized crime, such as the Mafia, Yakuza, and Triads, and also the nature of organized crime, from arms trafficking and drug dealing to extortion. Finally they explore the methods and agencies in place to control and prevent organized crime. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Procedural Law in International Arbitration

Procedural Law in International Arbitration

Georgios Petrochilos

International arbitration has become the preferred method for the resolution of international commercial disputes, yet the question still remains: What is the procedural law of international commercial arbitral proceedings and what is its relevance? This book comprehensively analyses the relevant legislative practice of all major arbitration venues in the world, as well as the arbitral practice of a number of arbitral institutions. Practitioners will welcome the book's examination of the fate of awards annulled in their state of origin, 'stateless' awards, the procedural regime of arbitrations involving sovereign states, and the human rights considerations in international arbitration.
Shareholder Protection Reconsidered

Shareholder Protection Reconsidered

Georgios Zouridakis

Routledge

sidottu
This book examines the role and potential of derivative actions in shareholder protection in public limited companies. Derivative actions have been a focal point of legislators’ agendas on shareholder protection, in the past few decades, throughout Europe and beyond. Nevertheless, there remain jurisdictions, such as Greece, which are still devoid of this remedy. Against this backdrop, this book examines whether and how the derivative action may improve shareholder protection, constituting thus a mechanism that justifies legislative attention. It does so in three parts. First, it analyses the desirable role derivative actions assume in protecting shareholder property, monitoring corporate management and mitigating agency costs, alongside their economic implications, introducing the reader to the contemporary international debate on the topic. Having set the desiderata, the second part proceeds with the comparative analysis of Greek, German and UK law – jurisdictions that have recently reformed their provisions on shareholder protection – examining not only the law on derivative actions and their Greek counterpart remedy but also mechanisms of shareholder protection that do, or could, assume functions similar to those of the derivative action. By critically assessing the merits and failures of the respective UK, German and Greek shareholder protection laws, the book then proceeds to offer (in Part III) a model framework of shareholders’ derivative litigation for jurisdictions considering reform. Written in an accessible format, it will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this important aspect of company law and corporate governance.
Byzantine Military Manuals as Literary Works and Practical Handbooks
This book studies the Sylloge Tacticorum, an important tenth-century Byzantine military manual. The text is used as a case study to connect military manuals with the challenges that Byzantium faced in its wars with the Arabs, but also with other aspects of Byzantine society such as education, politics, and conventions in the productions of literary texts and historical narratives. The book explores when the Sylloge was written and by whom. It identifies which passages from classical or earlier works were incorporated in the Sylloge and explains the reason why Byzantines imitated works of the past. The book then studies the extent to which the Sylloge was original and how innovation and originality were received in Byzantine society. Despite the imitation, the author of the Sylloge adapted and updated his material to reflect the current operational needs as well as the ideological, cultural and religious context of his time. Finally, the book attempts to estimate the extent to which Byzantine generals followed the advice of military manuals, and to explore whether historical narratives can be safely used to draw information as to how the Byzantines and the Arabs fought. Therefore, along with a detailed study of the Sylloge Tacticorum, this monograph also addresses broader issues of the pen and the sword such as military manuals in connection with Byzantine warfare, politics, literature, historiography and education.
Nonlinear Mechanics for Composite Heterogeneous Structures

Nonlinear Mechanics for Composite Heterogeneous Structures

Nonlinear Mechanics for Composite Heterogeneous Structures applies both classical and multi-scale finite element analysis to the non-linear, failure response of composite structures. These traditional and modern computational approaches are holistically presented, providing insight into a range of non-linear structural analysis problems. The classical methods include geometric and material non-linearity, plasticity, damage and contact mechanics. The cutting-edge formulations include cohesive zone models, the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM), multi-scale computational homogenization, localization of damage, neural networks and data-driven techniques. This presentation is simple but efficient, enabling the reader to understand, select and apply appropriate methods through programming code or commercial finite element software. The book is suitable for undergraduate studies as a final year textbook and for MSc and PhD studies in structural, mechanical, aerospace engineering and material science, among others. Professionals in these fields will also be strongly benefited. An accompanying website provides MATLAB codes for two-dimensional finite element problems with contact, multi-scale (FE2) and non-linear XFEM analysis, data-driven and machine learning simulations.

A Tenth-Century Byzantine Military Manual: The Sylloge Tacticorum

The Sylloge Tacticorum is a mid-Byzantine example of the literary genre of military manuals or Taktika which stretches back to antiquity. It was one of a number produced during the tenth century CE, a period when the Byzantine empire enjoyed a large measure of success in its wars against its traditional enemy, the Arabs. Compiled to record and preserve military strategies, know-how, and tactics, the manual discusses a wide variety of matters: battle formations, raids, sieges, ambushes, surprise attacks, the treatment of prisoners of war and defectors, distribution of booty, punishment of military offences, how to mount effective espionage, and how to send and receive envoys. There is even advice on the personal qualities required by generals, on how to neutralize enemy horses, and on how to protect the troops against poisoned food. The work culminates in an account of the stratagems employed by great Greek and Roman military commanders of the past. While, like so much of Byzantine literature, the Sylloge often simply reproduces material found in earlier texts, it also preserves a great deal of information about the military tactics being developed by the Byzantine army during the tenth century. It is the first Byzantine source to record the reappearance of a specialized heavy cavalry (the kataphraktoi) and of a specialized infantry (the menavlatoi) used to repel the attacks of the opposing heavy cavalry. There is also a great deal of information on new infantry and cavalry formations and on the new tactics that required them. This is the first complete translation of the Sylloge into English. It is accompanied by a glossary of the specialised Greek military vocabulary used in the work and by footnotes which explain obscure references and identify the author’s classical and Byzantine sources. An introduction places the work in its historical and literary context and considers some of the questions that
Byzantine Military Rhetoric in the Ninth Century

Byzantine Military Rhetoric in the Ninth Century

sidottu
Byzantine Military Rhetoric in the Ninth Century is the first English translation of the ninth-century Anonymi Byzantini Rhetorica Militaris. This influential text offers a valuable insight into the warrior ethic of the period, the role of religion in the justification of war, and the view of other military cultures by the Byzantine elite. It also played a crucial role in the compilation of the tenth-century Taktika and Constantine VII’s harangues during a period of intense military activity for the Byzantine Empire on its eastern borders. Including a detailed commentary and critical introduction to the author and the structure of the text, this book will appeal to all those interested in Byzantine political ideology and military history.
Mill on Nationality

Mill on Nationality

Georgios Varouxakis

Routledge
2002
sidottu
John Stuart Mill's thought has been central in recent (as well as older) works of political theory discussing the relationship between liberal democratic politics and nationality or nationalism -- which is far from surprising, given his undisputed influence on liberal attitudes towards nationality from the 1860s to the present. This book provides the first thorough critical study of the attitude of this pillar of the liberal tradition towards nationality, nationhood, patriotism, cosmopolitanism, intervention/non-intervention, and international politics more generally. Based on exhaustive research in a great range or writings by Mill, as well as by his contemporaries and later students, it establishes for the first time clearly and subtly where exactly Mill stood with regard to nationhood, nationalism, patriotism, cosmopolitanism, national self-determination, intervention/non-intervention and other important issues in international ethics. It thus exposes and challenges all sorts of misconceptions, half-truths, or myths surrounding Mill's views on, and attitude towards, nationality and related issues in a vast literature from the mid-nineteenth to the beginning of the twenty-first century. At the same time, it offers a timely contribution to contemporary debates among political theorists on the relationship between liberal democratic values and nationalism, patriotism and cosmopolitanism, not least through its articulation of a distinct sense in which patriotism and cosmopolitanism can be compatible and mutually reinforcing (based on Varouxakis's interpretation of Mill's thought on this question). The reader will find critical discussions of the pronouncements on some of the issues examined (or on Mill's contributions to them) of some of the most important late-twentieth-century political theorists as well as of contemporaries or near-contemporaries of Mill.
