Surface Wave Analysis for Near Surface Applications

Surface Wave Analysis for Near Surface Applications

Seismic Wave Analysis for Near Surface Applications presents the foundational tools necessary to properly analyze surface waves acquired according to both active and passive techniques. Applications range from seismic hazard studies, geotechnical surveys and the exploration of extra-terrestrial bodies. Surface waves have become critical to near-surface geophysics both for geotechnical goals and seismic-hazard studies. Included in this book are the related theories, approaches and applications which the lead editor has assembled from a range of authored contributions carefully selected from the latest developments in research. A unique blend of theory and practice, the book’s concepts are based on exhaustive field research conducted over the past decade from the world’s leading seismologists and geophysicists.
Efficient Joint Analysis of Surface Waves and Introduction to Vibration Analysis: Beyond the Clichés
This book bridges the gap between theory and practice, showing how a detailed definition of the shear-wave velocity (VS) profile can be efficiently obtained using limited field equipment and following simple acquisition procedures. It demonstrates how surface waves (used to define the VS profile) and vibration data (used to describe the dynamic behaviour of a building) can be recorded using the same equipment, and also highlights common problems, ambiguities and pitfalls that can occur when adopting popular methodologies, which are often based on a series of simplistic assumptions. Today, most national and international building codes take into account a series of parameters aimed at defining the local seismic hazard. Sites are characterised based on the local VS profile, and the dynamic behaviour of existing buildings is defined through the analysis of their eigenmodes. The book includes a series of case studies to help readers gain a deeper understanding of seismic and vibration data and the meaning (pros and cons) of a series of techniques often referred to as MASW, ESAC, SPAC, ReMi, HVSR, MAAM and HS. It also provides access to some of the datasets so that readers can gain a deeper and more concrete understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects.

The roaring '20s was the wildest decade of the 20th century It was a heady time, dominated by two significant events, Prohibition, and the soaring stock market. More alcohol was consumed during Prohibition than before the law was enacted. And loose money, only ten percent down, bought anything from stocks to autos, homes, and appliances. With the stock market open to everyone, fortunes were made and lost in days.Enter this era with Giancarlo Giambrone, a Sicilian emigre of a wealthy, centuries-old olive oil business, vowing to earn his own fortune. Join him as he becomes a stockbroker, foresees the 1929 market crash, and traverses the depression, becoming even wealthier. Enjoy his successes, romances, travels, and contributions to society, while surviving tragedy and standing up to FDR.Joe Reina BioMeet Joe Reina, entrepreneurial businessman turned author. Joe came up through the ranks in the apparel industry from salesman to manager, to store owner, business mogul, and real estate developer. An avid reader of history, he took the lessons from the past to navigate the economic ups and downs of the mid-twentieth century. His businesses entailed international travel and enabled him to explore a good part of the world. That exposure helped satisfy his lifelong desire to experience the pleasure of meeting people all over the world and then share his travels with his family and friends.Throughout his successes, Joe never forgot his roots of growing up on the "hill" of St. Louis and the fortitude of his spirited mother, an emigre from Sicily. He wrote the book, The Goat Sleeps in the Kitchen, to tell her remarkable story of becoming a successful businesswoman in the early twentieth century. His fascination with that era resulted in the birth of his fictional alter ego, Giancarlo Giambrone, one of the world's great entrepreneurs. Joe lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Don Carlo Rusconi

In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim ¨the Grim¨ conquered Egypt and brought his empire for the first time in history into direct contact with the trading world of the Indian Ocean. During the decades that followed, the Ottomans became progressively more engaged in the affairs of this vast and previously unfamiliar region, eventually to the point of launching a systematic ideological, military and commercial challenge to the Portuguese Empire, their main rival for control of the lucrative trade routes of maritime Asia. The Ottoman Age of Exploration is the first comprehensive historical account of this century-long struggle for global dominance, a struggle that raged from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Malacca, and from the interior of Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. Based on extensive research in the archives of Turkey and Portugal, as well as materials written on three continents and in a half dozen languages, it presents an unprecedented picture of the global reach of the Ottoman state during the sixteenth century. It does so through a dramatic recounting of the lives of sultans and viziers, spies, corsairs, soldiers-of-fortune, and women from the imperial harem. Challenging traditional narratives of Western dominance, it argues that the Ottomans were not only active participants in the Age of Exploration, but ultimately bested the Portuguese in the game of global politics by using sea power, dynastic prestige, and commercial savoir faire to create their own imperial dominion throughout the Indian Ocean.

Seminal texts by renowned Italian architect Giancarlo De Carlo on architecture, education, and anarchy. Giancarlo De Carlo's academic and professional career combined two seemingly opposed terms in a single vocation: architecture and anarchy. But this was a vocation that avoided the utopian fantasies of the 1960s and 1970s and instead strove for rigor. In the essays collected in this book, De Carlo shows how the idea of participatory architecture can open the way to a realistic, fully realizable utopia--in theory, but also in practice: in his urban planning of the city center of Rimini and in his architectural plan for the village of Matteotti in Terni. "Architecture is too important to be left to architects," De Carlo claims, and one of the fundamental questions this collection poses is: what is the role of the architect? Included here are De Carlo's writings on the crisis of the university in the wake of student protests that anticipated not only the uprising of May 1968 but continue to speak to the crisis in the educational system today. His analysis of the "overturned pyramid" structure of the university still has resonance today, where everything is supported by the very thin tip of the academic body that relies not on the tensions, suggestions, and demands that come from below, but by the principle of authority--a structure that emphasizes the institutionalization and professionalization of education and scholarship rather than on alternative processes of learning. Also included are De Carlo's celebrated essays "Why/How to Construct School Buildings" and "Architecture's Public," which address the potential of architecture to translate and realize the issues that arise from the act of protest.
