Gig - An Italian in Nottingham deals with a young composer coming from Italy experiencing the English University, its ways, its girls, the general environment, finding out his own illusions struggling for staying alive. In the first part, there's a focus on the drinking culture and clubbing, especially on the lack of honesty and frankness between people, including strange ways of chatting girls up, ways which I describe from my outcast position while I am trying to integrate within these manners, hating myself for failing and even attempting to suicide because of it. The title An Italian in Nottingham says already everything, for it enlightens comically the absurdity of the story since the very start. On the other hand, the second part is characterized by a stronger and grown attitude toward issues and life, flowing into a romantic and troubled love story ending in an ambiguous way with Gig , a Chinese girl studying in Nottingham for few months.

The loveable duo of Gigi and little sis Birdie are back in Gigi: The Ballet Recital, which follows the tale of our bubbly heroine Gigi as she and Birdie prepare for the big annual ballet recital. Normally, this event is the highlight of Gigi's year, but this time, something is different: Gigi has been put in the back row (gasp ) and now no one is going to be able to see her. Why even dance at all Gigi's mojo has suddenly pirouetted off and left her with a case of the ballet blues. But, when the recital rolls around and first-timer Birdie panics out on stage, big sis Gigi rushes to the rescue and unexpectedly rediscovers the reason she loves to dance (spoiler alert: it doesn't have anything to do with the audience ). This relatable story of how things don't always meet our expectations is a perfect way to help kids deal with life's inevitable disappointments. Gigi's journey from sadness and self-pity to the selfless act that lets her find her joy and passion again is a great lesson in resilience. The beautiful illustrations will appeal to the budding ballerina (there are fluffy tutus and satin slippers galore ), and the silly antics of the sisters as they practice their dancing (doing a pointed toe high five at the dinner table or jumping "gracefully" on the bed) are a guaranteed belly laugh. And, even when the tale takes its sad turn, Gigi's exaggerated glumness will elicit giggles of recognition from little readers. The simple and sweet storytelling is captivating for all ages, as at the heart of the story is the relationship between the siblings (a fun continuation of the glimpse we got in the prequel, "Gigi: Big Sister"), portrayed here with a joyfulness and warmth that jumps off the page. Gigi and Birdie are the best of friends, and it's inspirational to see how they help each other through this toe-shoe trauma and come out stronger on the other side. No doubt these two will have many adventures to come

The irrepressible Gigi is back in "Gigi Garage Sale," a sweet tale that starts off as a lesson about letting go of objects and ends up telling a deeper story of the existential pain of growing up and leaving childhood behind. When Mom decides to throw a garage sale, Gigi and little sis Birdie are all in They're excited to help label and sell all the unneeded items from their house, especially since they're going to get paid for their labor. At first, it's satisfying to see unplayed-with toys going to good use (even if neighbor Lucy could stand to wipe her nose and hands a bit before handling Gigi's old doll ) But, when someone tries to buy the old rocking chair that Mom used to rock Gigi and Birdie in as babies, Gigi freaks out - that can't possibly be for sale When Mom confirms that it is, Gigi is shocked. How could Mom bear to part with "Chairy" It was a part of so many precious memories of feeding and singing and rocking her babies to sleep. Mom explains that the girls don't need it anymore as they're getting older... and that the woman who wants to buy it is clearly expecting a child (ah, so that mysterious bump under the lady's dress is not a basketball like Birdie thought ) Eventually, Gigi and Birdie agree to let go of the chair if they can have one more rock in it with Mom. Saying goodbye is hard, but they know Chairy will be going to a good home where it can serve its purpose... and that they have plenty of new adventures ahead of them as big kids Once again, author Mottinger uses the thoughtful, sensitive, quirky protagonist of Gigi to teach a universal lesson, this time about growing up and letting go of the past. Seen through Gigi's unique perspective, we get a sometimes comedic and sometimes deeply touching view of events that will resonate with young readers. And the illustrations are colorful and fun, brilliantly capturing Gigi's cheeky take on the world. "Gigi Garage Sale" is another fun addition to Gigi's adventures, with a lovely message for kids that grownups can benefit from too. (Maybe it will inspire you to get rid of that lonely piece of furniture in your garage )

Gigi: Big Sister is the tale of a little girl who is super excited about her baby sister, Birdie, becoming her new best friend. However, Gigi is faced with the harsh reality that... well, newborns just aren't all that much fun. It's kind of like trying to be best friends with a potato (if potatoes cried all the time and pooped everywhere). But Gigi soon discovers that infants do have a few redeeming qualities (her new baby sis is good at staring contests and cloud watching), and if Gigi can just have a little patience, Birdie will eventually acquire all the skills she needs to participate in Gigi's wishlist of fun sister activities (nail painting, sleepovers, baking cookies) And, best of all, Gigi will be there to experience all the cool milestones as Birdie achieves them: clapping, talking, even learning to say Gigi's name In fact, Birdie is the one who gives Gigi her moniker when she can't pronounce "Georgie." Told through whimsical illustrations and a kid's POV, the story takes us from Gigi's initial disappointment at a little sister who only seems to eat, sleep, and poop, through her gradual discovery of Birdie's abilities, and finally to the sister friendship she'd been hoping for. Kids will delight in Gigi's exaggerated reactions and Birdie's bodily functions (how can something so little burp that loud?) and her over-the-top expectations for her infant sister (when will Birdie be able to wear tutus and have a tea party?). A perfect gift for a big-sibling-to-be, this book is a fun way for second-time parents to talk to their firstborn about what to expect and have a laugh at the messy chaos that a new baby brings. It's a reminder to savor the experience of watching their little "potato" grow into a walking, talking member of the family... and that being sisters is a lifelong journey of love.
