Exile Dad: Boca Raton to Jost, Coral Bay and Gili Meno
"I never wanted to leave... "When two of his ex-wives joined forces to turn the Child Custody Court against him, architect Ken Yolman had only two options: go to jail and seeing the kids only when their mothers allowed, or escape Florida and rebuild his relationships with them from a distance.Ken chose self-exile in the Virgin Islands: so close, yet so far away. For the next 23 years, Ken forged a new life amid a unique and colorful island culture while fighting to overcome years of negative brainwashing that his own kids had been fed. Along the way, he endures a rollercoaster of shifting alliances: from new friends and old, business acquaintances, island romances, and even his own brother and sister Pulled from the detailed pages of Ken's own daily journal, follow him as he desperately attempts to rekindle the love of his own children while following his instinctive path trying to find his own place in the world. The Plane's tire's screeched as we hit the steaming tarmac on the island if St Thomas: the light bouncing off the plane abruptly interrupting my cloudly trance. It wasn't the best landing I'd ever experienced, but hardly the worst. As I descended the steps from the plane, the humidity slapped my face with a heavy dose of reality. Repeated thoughts and memories of the kids. The same images if them, so fleeting, over and over again. What the hell was I doing so far from them? Was this really the right move? Where would I go from here?

Modern Western culture is saturated with images, imprinting visual standards of concepts such as beauty and femininity onto our collective consciousness. Blindness Through the Looking Glass examines how gender and femininity are performed and experienced in everyday life by women who do not rely on sight as their dominant mode of perception, identifying the multiple senses involved in the formation of gender identity within social interactions. Challenging visuality as the dominant mode to understand gender, social performance, and visual culture, the book offers an ethnographic investigation of blindness (and sight) as a human condition, putting both blindness and vision “on display” by discussing people’s auditory, tactile, and olfactory experiences as well as vision and sight, and by exploring ways that individuals perform blindness and “sightedness” in their everyday lives. Based on in-depth interviews with 40 blind women in Israel and anthropological fieldwork, the book investigates the social construction and daily experience of blindness in a range of domains. Uniquely, the book brings together blind symbolism with the everyday experiences of blind and sighted individuals, joining in mutual conversation the fields of disability studies, visual culture, anthropology of the senses, and gender studies.

This book presents empirical studies of the rise, expansion, and influence of scientific discourse and organization throughout the world, over the past century. Using quantitative cross-national data, it shows the impact of this scientized world polity on national societies. It examines how this world scientific system and national reflections of it have influenced a wide variety of institutional spheres—the economy, political systems, human rights, environmentalism, and organizational reforms. The authors argue that the triumph of science across social domains and around the world is due to its institutionalized cultural authority rather than to its instrumental utility for societies or for their dominant elites. Thus, following the Stanford approach to institutional theory in sociology, the book emphasizes the symbolic or religious role science plays in the modern world.
