The basic of the BPM technique in the frequency domain relies on treating the slowly varying envelope of the monochromatic electromagnetic field under paraxial propagation, thus allowing efficient numerical computation in terms of speed and allocated memory. In addition, the BPM based on finite differences is an easy way to implement robust and efficient computer codes. This book presents several approaches for treating the light: wide-angle, scalar approach, semivectorial treatment, and full vectorial treatment of the electromagnetic fields. Also, special topics in BPM cover the simulation of light propagation in anisotropic media, non-linear materials, electro-optic materials, and media with gain/losses, and describe how BPM can deal with strong index discontinuities or waveguide gratings, by introducing the bidirectional-BPM. BPM in the time domain is also described, and the book includes the powerful technique of finite difference time domain method, which fills the gap when the standard BPM is no longer applicable. Once the description of these numerical techniques have been detailed, the last chapter includes examples of passive, active and functional integrated photonic devices, such as waveguide reflectors, demultiplexers, polarization converters, electro-optic modulators, lasers or frequency converters. The book will help readers to understand several BPM approaches, to build their own codes, or to properly use the existing commercial software based on these numerical techniques.

Un joven p caro roba una cajita de piedra en una tienda de antig edades. La belleza de la pieza y de la tienda le llevan a buscar a alg n entendido que le pueda dar pistas sobre su origen. Su contenido no pretende ser novedoso en relaci n al resto de publicaciones sobre la m sica moderna, pero si tenemos en cuenta el panorama bibliogr fico actual; la mayor a de los temas aqu tratados s lo se encuentran en publicaciones no traducidas al castellano, utilizando f rmulas complejas, dif ciles de asimilar y de llevar a la pr ctica. Tambi n es habitual encontrarnos con una falta de consenso en cuanto a terminolog a, ya que los mismos conceptos pueden aparecer con gran variedad de nomenclaturas. De estos hechos, surge con fuerza la necesidad de contar con una publicaci n en espa ol donde no s lo se unifiquen t rminos, sino que tambi n se traten temas de armon a, rearmonizaci n, arreglos, orquestaci n e improvisaci n sintetizados y expuestos de un modo pr ctico y c modo para el uso de los estudiosos de la m sica. En cuanto a la estructuraci n de contenidos, encontramos aqu tres amplias secciones. La primera trata la armon a junto a la rearmonizaci n, separando los elementos m s b sicos de los avanzados. El hecho de exponer ambos conceptos de manera conjunta facilita en gran medida una mejor compresi n y asimilaci n de los contenidos, tan relacionados e interconectados entre s . No obstante, no entraremos en t rminos de lenguaje musical b sico (como es la descripci n de intervalos, compases, etc tera), ya que contamos con diversas publicaciones en castellano al respecto. La segunda parte se centra en las t cnicas de arreglos y orquestaci n. Por el mismo motivo, tampoco veremos aqu aspectos b sicos como los registros de cada instrumento, etc. sino que daremos una secuencia de t cnicas variadas sobre conducci n de voces, instrumentaci n y otros elementos a tener en cuenta en la escritura musical. Por ltimo, abordaremos la improvisaci n desde el punto de vista de la armon a y la rearmonizaci n expuesto al comienzo. Se aconseja por tanto la lectura previa de las dos primeras secciones, ya que en ellas se exponen los elementos que aqu se llevar n a la pr ctica.
