With the municipal buildings of “Red Vienna,” the utopia of enabling weaker individuals in society to also have a good life was realised. Originally erected in the 1920s to provide affordable living space for the working class as well as urban infrastructure, communal ownership of housing also makes it possible today to integrate people who would otherwise have limited opportunities in neoliberal society. The relevance of municipal ownership to the current situation consists as well of the possibility to exert an attenuating influence on real estate speculation and rising rents. With her camera, Gisela Erlacher (*1956) follows the parcourse through the archways of superblocks such as the Sandleiten-Hof, Goethe-Hof, and Karl-Marx-Hof. She portrays residents and visitors in all their diversity and gives them space to present themselves beyond stereotyped depictions. Text in English and German.

For over 20 years, Gisela Krohn (*1966) has made landscapes the focus of her paintings. In Krohn’s large-scale works, humans appear only in the form of the mark they have left on nature. She depicts asphalt roads and man-made pathways cutting through forests, attesting to human intervention into nature. For Gisela Krohn, this exploration of the landscape also always involves looking into herself and her relationship with the environment. With her subtle play of colour and fascinating compositions, the artist succeeds in capturing the beauty of nature while simultaneously highlighting the threat it is under. Text in English and German.

Cologne-based painter Gisela Krohn (born 1966) maintains an intimate dialogue with nature, reprising basic motifs of water, forests, paths, sky and clouds. With 60 color reproductions, this volume surveys her work of the past three decades.
After a degree in psychology and studies in camera and cinematography at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Gisela Erlacher has turned to photography entirely. For more than twenty years, she has been working on contemporary architecture and on topics related to urban and suburban space. For her recent project Skies of Concrete she travelled to China, Britain, the Netherlands and to parts of her home country Austria. The images show bridges: elevated roads in cities, viaducts, entangled lanes of expressway intersections. Yet Erlacher's interest is neither on the function of bridges nor on their nature as symbols for communication or mobility. She directs her gaze at the spaces that the crossing of a transport route causes to open up as a specific area within the urban fabric or in the countryside. She focuses on absurd situations that can occur when existing structures are drastically changed by building a bridge or when dead spaces beneath bridges are functionalised in one form or another. This new book features some forty of Erlacher's striking photographs, complemented by essays on her work and the spaces she has captured in her images.
