In the rural hills of Italy's Emilia Romagna, near a small ancient village, something unnatural has started to happen. SOME COMMENTS FROM TEST READERS***Filotto's first foray into horror is fantastic. I have readseveral of his other books, and this may be my favourite. Unlike his sprawling space opera The Overlords of Mars trilogy, which has some very intricate plot lines andtechnology, this one is pure entertainment.Scary, hilarious, and above all a really fun read.I hope they make it into a film, it would be awesome.***I've never laughed so much and simultaneoulsy been soterrified of ever being outside my home at night again.***So good I can't believe I'm going to say this, but this mightbe the best thing you've ever written ***Addictive. The characters and plot are both entertaining yet believable. There is very interesting mixture of gritty realism, humor, and stark horror here. I have never before encountered such a perfectly tuned blend of these elements.***Some of the dialogue and situations presented are laugh out loud funny, and others scenes would make this an instant classic as a film due to the humanity of the characters in it. Any GenXer who used pen and paper RPGs, will also find some delightful and cleverly used references. I suspect Mr. Filotto had a lot of fun writing this. I can't wait for the sequels.

Giuseppe Mazzini - Italian patriot, humanist, and republican - was one of the most celebrated and revered political activists and thinkers of the nineteenth century. This volume is the first to compare and contrast the perception of his thought and the transformation of his image across the world. Mazzini's contribution to the Italian Risorgimento was unparalleled; he stood for a 'religion of humanity'; he argued against tyranny, and for universal education, a democratic franchise and the liberation of women. The papers in this volume reflect the range of Mazzini's political thought, discussing his vision of international relations, his concept of the nation and the role of arts in politics. And they detail how his writings and reputation influenced nations and leaders across Europe, the Americas, and India. Linking the study of political history to the history of art, literature and religion, this volume is essential reading for all those interested in modern nationalism and the history of democracy.

Giuseppe Pitrè, a nineteenth-century Sicilian physician, gathered an enormous wealth of folk and fairy tales as he traveled and treated the poor throughout Palermo. He also received tales from friends and scholars throughout the island of Sicily. A dedicated folklorist, whose significance ranks alongside the Brothers Grimm, he published a 25-volume collection of Sicilian folk tales, legends, songs, and customs between 1871 and 1914. Though first published in their original Sicilian dialect, these tales have never before been translated, collected, and published in English until now. This historic two-volume set collects 300 and 100 variants of his most entertaining and most important folk and fairy tales, along with lively, vivid illustrations by Carmelo Lettere. In stark contrast to the more literary ambitions of the Grimms' tales, Pitré’s possess a charming, earthy quality that reflect the customs, beliefs, and superstitions of the common people more clearly than any other European folklore collection of the nineteenth century. Edited, translated, and with a critical introduction by world-renowned folk and fairy tale experts Jack Zipes and Joseph Russo, this collection will firmly establish Pitrè’s importance as a folklorist.
James Hepokoski provides a reliable summary of what is currently known about Otello, along with an interpretation of the significance of the work within Verdi's career. The book begins with a detailed synopsis which interweaves some of the specific stage action from the 1887 Milanese première. There follows a close consideration of how the opera was actually written: Arrigo Boito's derivation of the libretto from Shakespeare and the subsequent textual revisions; Verdi's composition of the opera from 1884 to 1887 and an overview of the revisions of the opera for Venice in 1887 and Paris in 1894. A further chapter outlines Verdi's own ideas for the performance of Otello and this is followed by William Ashbrook's summary of the opera's stage history up to the present. Professor Hepokoski continues by suggesting a new model for understanding the musical structure of Otello. The book concludes with a study of the opera as a work of Shakespearean adaptation.
Summarises what is currently known about Otello and interprets its significance within Verdi's career.
A compact, up-to-date guide to the history and construction of Verdi's last - and possibly greatest - opera.
