W hrend sein Bestehen auf Naturwahrheit des Spiels bald als Allgemeingut in der Diskussion um die Schauspielkunst galt, blieb seine Theorie der Einf hlung umstritten. Er fordert die vollkommene Identifikation des Schauspielers mit seiner Rolle. Der Schauspieler oder die Schauspielerin soll die Gedanken und Gef hle seiner Rolle zu seinen eigenen machen. Seine Idee von einer nicht mehr k nstlich -mechanischen Inspiration sondern von einer vollst ndig affektiven Selbstt uschung des Akteurs zum Zwecke der Identifikation war v llig neu. Diese Auffassung geht bis auf die antike (in Aulus Gellius' Noctes Atticae und fter berichtete) Anekdote ber den r mischen Schauspieler Roscius zur ck, der die Urne seines soeben verstorbenen Sohnes als B hnenrequisit benutzt haben soll, um die eigene Ersch tterung auch auf der B hne sp ren, sie auf die dargestellte Figur bertragen und deren Leid auf diese Weise in vollendeter, mitleiderregender Weise ausdr cken zu k nnen. (vgl. LexTheat. Bd. 2, S. 105f) Francesco Riccoboni widersprach dieser These in L'Art du Th tre womit er unter den Zeitgenossen (etwa bei D. Diderot im Paradoxe sur le Com dien) breiten Anklang fand und sich ein Saint - Albine auf theoretischer Ebene entgegengesetztes Lager herausbildete. Dieses forderte, dass der Schauspieler seine Distanz zur Rolle bewusst halten solle. Die emotionale Beteiligung sei ein Hemmnis f r die Kunstfertigkeit des Darstellers, welche jederzeit die k hle berlegung erfordert. In meiner Arbeit werde ich n her auf diese beiden Theorien eingehen und Sainte-Albine s Ansichten zu einer vollkommenen Spielweise herausarbeiten.

The division of the work into three movements â respectively proclamatory, prayerful, and joyfully affirmative â corresponds to the divisions in the text.
