The present edited collection of essays on the Sicilian author Goliarda Sapienza includes contributions from established and emerging scholars working in the field of contemporary women’s writing. Essays in this volume examine Sapienza through multiple perspectives, taking into account the articulation of subjectivity through autobiographical writing and the complex representation of gender and sexual identities. Also considered here is Sapienza’s oblique position within the Italian literary canon, with contributions moving beyond isolated textual analyses whilst attempting to situate the author’s works within a framework of intertextual and contextual cultural references. Exploring the fertile network of explicit and implicit intersections with Italian and European literature (English and French in particular), as well as with Western philosophical thought in which Sapienza’s texts are embedded, this volume will provide an overdue contribution to the belated appraisal of an author whose due recognition is, in Cesare Garboli’s words, only a matter of time: “Time will work in favour of Goliarda Sapienza’s works. And this is not a wish; it is a certainty.”

Italian writers Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) and Elena Ferrante are increasingly celebrated for their vivid depictions of women's lives and identities in twentieth and twenty-first century society. In a detailed comparison of Sapienza's multi-volume Autobiography of Contradictions (1967-1987) and Ferrante's world-famous Neapolitan Novels (2011-2014), this study contributes new insights to the rich fields of scholarship on both writers. It shows how reading these writers in conversation reveals a sense of fracture in modern Italian women's writing which uses literary representations of fractured female bodies and identities to open up wider debates about selfhood, corporeality, and the ethics of human relationships. Defying stereotypical depictions of female fragility and irrationality, Ferrante and Sapienza's fragmented female voices make of the novel of fragmentation in the modern Italian context a robust ethical tool for uncovering oppression and violence and their effects, demonstrating how Italian women writers since the 1960s have offered challenging and nuanced depictions of human subjectivity and moral development.Rebecca Walker is Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow at Trinity College Dublin.

Goliarda Sapienza's The Art of Joy was written over a nine year span, from 1967 to 1976. At the time of her death in 1996, Sapienza had published nothing in a decade, having been unable to find a publisher for what was to become her most celebrated work, due to its perceived immorality. One publisher's rejection letter exclaimed: 'It's a pile of iniquity.' The manuscript lay for decades in a chest finally being proclaimed a "forgotten masterpiece" when it was eventually published in 2005. This epic Sicilian novel, which begins in the year 1900 and follows its main character, Modesta, through nearly the entire span of the 20th century, is at once a coming-of-age novel, a tale of sexual adventure and discovery, a fictional autobiography, and a sketch of Italy's moral, political and social past. Born in a small Sicilian village and orphaned at age nine, Modesta spends her childhood in a convent raised by nuns.Through sheer cunning, she manages to escape, and eventually becomes a princess. Sensual, proud, and determined, Modesta wants to discover the infinite richness of life and sets about destroying all social barriers that impede her quest for the fulfilment of her desires. She seduces both men and women, and even murder becomes acceptable as a means of removing an obstacle to happiness and self-discovery.Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) was born in Catania, Sicily in 1924, in an anarchist socialist family. At sixteen, she entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome and worked under the direction of Luchino Visconti, Alessandro Blasetti and Francesco Maselli. She is the author of several novels published during her lifetime: Lettera Aperta (1967), Il Filo Di Mezzogiorno (1969), Università di Rebibbia (1983), Le Certezze Del Dubbio (1987). L'Arte Della Gioia is considered her masterpiece.Anne Milano Appel, Ph.D., a former library director and language teacher, has been translating professionally for nearly twenty years, and is a member of ALTA, ATA, NCTA and PEN. Her translation of Giovanni Arpino's Scent of a Woman (Penguin, 2011) was named the winner of The John Florio Prize for Italian Translation (2013).

Världen är den vi ser genom ögonen på den unga Goliarda: en evig följd av prov att klara, möten med vänliga eller hotfulla personer och olika utmaningar. Sapienza berättar som sin barndom med en riddarromans allvar och skapar ett dramatiskt äventyr där huvudpersonen tvingas möta den yttre världens kaos. Självbiografi och autofiktion har varit en dominerande riktning i de senaste decenniernas litteratur. Det är alltså inte konstigt att man nyligen har återupptäckt och omvärderat Sapienzas narrativa produktion, där berättelsen om henne själv utgör navet runt vilket hennes verk snurrar, inte minst i hennes största roman, L’arte della gioia.
