Growing up in Bay City Oregon is a coming-of-age historical memoir that takes place in the years between 1936 and 1953. Gordon Lee's family leaves their life behind in Nebraska to move cross country to Oregon when he is still only a small child. His father, in search of a war effort job, finds work with Kaiser Shipyard on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon where Lee attended Woodstock School. But after the war was over his father found himself out of a job, so he goes in search of one and finds it at Buel's Hardware in Tillamook, which paid $1.52 per hour, and rented the family a two-bedroom cabin to live in beside the Barview store in Barview, Oregon, along the coast. All the while, the family is just barely scraping by, so Lee sets off on an enterprising journey to make his own money from a young age, devising several moneymaking ventures just to be able to afford the basics of a real childhood. Along the way he has several adventures that some could only dream about. In his memoir, Lee gives historical accounts of what it was like during that period of his life, as well as descriptions of places long since come and gone. He recreates the world he grew up in for those of us who will never be able to experience the same place, firsthand.Gordon Lee's personal narrative of his earliest memories is honest and candid. His memoir starts at birth and chronicles his life growing up in Tillamook County, Oregon until he joins the marines after high school. Growing Up In Bay City Oregon: A Memoir 1936-1953 is accompanied by extensive back matter, including: Lee's occupations after growing up in Bay City, a recap of all of his moneymaking ventures he takes the reader on over the course of the book, Lee's literary background, more upcoming books by Lee in the works, a section with vignettes from Lee's life after Bay City, Lee's memorable life experiences, and a section describing the processes for peeling cascara bark and picking fox glove, both of which Lee did to earn money. There is also an acknowledgements section at the back of his memoir of people who supported its creation.63 black & white images.

Discipleship making seems to be a lost art within the modern church today. As a matter of fact, the church seems to neglect true discipleship because it has a lack of a working knowledge in God's Word. Disciplining, combined with practical use in the everyday world, is a necessity today if the babe in Jesus Christ is going to survive Satan's devices and schemes. In this book, I have set it up so that the beginner can learn how to study the Bible easily. The subject matter walks the new believer through the basic doctrine he/she needs to know in order to establish a root system in the word. Each subject area uses one verse and breaks it down into principles that can be easily understood. Each verse used in each subject is highlighted. The key words and the Greek spellings are shown with their meanings. Questions are provided for the new believer to think and pray about in each subject area. A prayer of confession is provided to teach the new believer how to pray God's Word in accordance to God's will.

Essays and short stories from a celebrated Cupeño/Cahuilla journalist."Johnson is by turns tender and hilarious—as ever. This book is a welcome addition to his loving history of the world as he knows it." —Susan Straight, author of SacramentIn this deeply moving collection of short stories and essays, Gordon Lee Johnson (Cupeño/Cahuilla) cements his voice not only as a wry commentator on American Indian reservation life but also as a master of fiction writing. In Johnson's stories, all of which are set on the fictional San Ignacio reservation in Southern California, we meet unforgettable characters like Plato Pena, the Stanford-bound geek who reads Kahlil Gibran during intertribal softball games; hardboiled investigator Roddy Foo; and Etta, whose motto is “early to bed, early to rise, work like hell, and advertise,” as they face down circumstances by turns ordinary and devastating. From the noir-tinged mystery of "Unholy Wine" to the gripping intensity of "Tukwut," Johnson effortlessly switches genre, perspective, and tense, vividly evoking people and places that are fictional but profoundly true to life. The nonfiction featured in Bird Songs Don't Lie is equally revelatory in its exploration of complex connections between past and present. Whether examining his own conflicted feelings toward the missions as a source of both cultural damage and identity, sharing advice for cooking for eight dozen cowboys and -girls, or recounting an influx of New Age seekers of enlightenment in the Pushcart-nominated "100 White Women," Johnson plumbs the comedy, catastrophe, and beauty of his life on the Pala Reservation to thunderous effect.

Effective financial planning for executives and entrepreneurs is complex, dense, and impossible to reduce to a single, easy-to-understand formula. Designed to emphasize the importance of successful, targeted financial planning, this book begins by telling a story about a fictional, but plausible, power couple and their family who (spoiler alert!) do pretty much everything wrong in securing their financial future. In most cases, they don’t do the things needed because they don’t know what they are. Using this story as a case study of an executive and an entrepreneur, the book breaks down the case into chapters and offers practical discussions of all the key financial planning components—investment planning, tax planning, estate planning, philanthropic planning, risk management, and equity-based compensation to name a few—with the tools needed to tailor a plan for virtually every circumstance and need. While there is no single plan that works for everybody, this book provides a guide, with technical information alongside general themes, focused on how to build an effective financial plan. In addition to all the benefits of the first edition, this second edition provides significant new content and insights for the entrepreneur who is planning for a future liquidity event such as a sale. It also provides detail on how to manage concentrated ownership positions and on ESG investment strategies, a rapidly growing investment theme. Finally, the second edition includes tax, estate planning, regulatory, and other updates to reflect changes since the first edition was published.

It was the end of 2005 when our employer, a major European Investment Bank, gave our team the mandate to compute in an accurate way the counterparty credit exposure arising from exotic derivatives traded by the ?rm. As often happens, - posure of products such as, for example, exotic interest-rate, or credit derivatives were modelled under conservative assumptions and credit of?cers were struggling to assess the real risk. We started with a few models written on spreadsheets, t- lored to very speci?c instruments, and soon it became clear that a more systematic approach was needed. So we wrote some tools that could be used for some classes of relatively simple products. A couple of years later we are now in the process of building a system that will be used to trade and hedge counterparty credit ex- sure in an accurate way, for all types of derivative products in all asset classes. We had to overcome problems ranging from modelling in a consistent manner different products booked in different systems and building the appropriate architecture that would allow the computation and pricing of credit exposure for all types of pr- ucts, to ?nding the appropriate management structure across Business, Risk, and IT divisions of the ?rm. In this book we describe some of our experience in modelling counterparty credit exposure, computing credit valuation adjustments, determining appropriate hedges, and building a reliable system.
