Sickle cell disease was recognized to have a molecular basis more than 50 years ago, since when knowledge of the pathophysiology of the disease has paralleled the developments of molecular biology. Characterized by a striking red cell deformity, a great deal has been learnt about the mechanisms involved and animal models developed over the last 10 years have contributed to these studies. Despite greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms, this knowledge has had little impact in improving management at the bedside. It is the authors' belief that much of importance remains to be learnt from clinical studies which ultimately may define the questions most relevant for our molecular colleagues to answer. Jamaica has provided a superb setting for clinical studies, which initially documented the extremely variable clinical course and then proceeded to seek the determinants in a Cohort Study based on newborn diagnosis and follow-up which has continued for the past 27 years. This new edition of Sickle Cell Disease reviews the history and many of the recent developments in laboratory studies but retains the perspective of a practising clinician. A critical appraisal of the available observations and evidence has sought to define the best practice in its management.

A bird may use a wide range and combination of sensory information that comes from sight, hearing, smell, mechanoreception, taste, and magnetoreception. It may also include specific refinements of senses, such as echolocation and remote touch from the bill. The book recognises that there are many complex and subtle trade-offs and complementarities of information between different types of sensory information. Australia has an enviable record for airline safety - No one has ever died in an accident involving a commercial jet aircraft in Australia. The reasons behind this have been the source of much speculation and theories tend to focus on issues related to the natural environment and even luck. However, with human error being present in arguably 100% of aircraft accidents, it seems reasonable that a good safety record is at least partly the consequence of human intervention. This text uses Australian aviation as a case study of a safe system to explore the interactions between the natural, operational and human environments. Based on doctoral research including a major survey of pilot and air traffic controller perceptions, the book is unusual in that it looks at positive examples in safety rather than taking the traditional reactive approach to safety deficiencies.

He contends that to counter the Reformed tradition’s vulnerability to a cultural colonization by secular modernity, Reformed theology needs to amplify its appreciation for God’s omnipresence in creation with a re-appropriation of the condensed symbols of faith.
